Captain Sir Tom Moore: Cleric's apology for tweet condemning nationwide clap 'does not undo hurt'

It's worrying how some can harbour so much hate and still be allowed to hold a position in the Church (and fuel division through Twitter)

@Itsnotlikethiswithotherpeople

I can see how Captain Tom now be could be used as a right wing poster boy (entirely without his collusion/approval/support whilst he was alive). That has absolutely nothing to do with him as an individual but is a well worn path for the far right. They did the same with various murdered soldiers and their families actually had to come out to condemn Britain First misusing their son’s image. That’s the sort of thing that the clergy person was talking about. He wasn’t criticising Captain Tom himself at all.
Is it though? It's ridiculous.

Far right, nationalist, are all just becoming racial slurs you use against white people when you don't agree with them on a topic (whether political or otherwise). It's crazy how many center left political moderates get called white nationalists or far right when they are no where near that politically. I've been called this numerous times online and I vote further left then most (green party last 2 elections).

It's just a straight up racial slur at this point.

Glenchase · 04/02/2021 15:07

If a person claims they "don't see race", how can they see racism?
Not everything has to be about race. Racism is when race is brought into a situation unnecessarily. Like this cleric has brought race into the situation around Captain Sir Tom.

MullinerSpec · 04/02/2021 15:09

The man deserved recognition for raising so much for charity. What I'm actually peeved about is the call for raising a statue of him, sure good idea but what about a statue of Indian soldiers who faught during WW2, there's no statue to my knowledge of the sacrifice made by them to this day.

Hard not to if one is talking about white nationalists appropriating the 'totemic' emblems that resonate with a certain cohort.

If you disagree, say so politely instead of vilifying someone

This 'priest' has vilified those who are white and British, yes[/quote]
Don't be silly. Of course he hasn't. Hysterical idiocy.

titchy · 04/02/2021 15:13

@shabbytabby

Coincidentally Jarel Robinson-Brown has a book coming out (unless it's an even bigger coincidence and someone else with the same name). The Skipping Sikh, Rajinder Singh, has an MBE, and is held in affection by many people.
You're the first person to mention him.

See also Dabiral Choudhury.

Won't be any calls for statues for them though will there. Sad

Pointing out examples of systemic racism, which this Reverend did, isn't the same as accusing those that call for clapping or statues of being racists themselves.

There have been many other fabulously charming and charismatic elderly fundraisers - ask yourselves what it is about Tom that made him an inadvertent figurehead.

@Comefromaway

I'd not heard of the Sikh man, which sort of demonstrates the point.

I had heard of a man of on my local news who did 50 half marathons running round his coffee table whilst fasting for Ramadan but that didn't make the national news either.

Sounds better than half the celebrity guff they have on TV. Quite meditative.

There are several statues and monuments across UK. Maybe there could be more, I wouldn't be opposed to that as I am sure most wouldn't. I believe most/all people recognise their contributions to WW2.

What are you talking about?

OP posts:
NinaMimi · 04/02/2021 15:14

I don’t think race should have been brought into it as to me the main issue with the clapping was the prime minister’s role in it. That put me off it and I didn’t hear anyone participate in it where I live.

There is a discussion about racism and nationalism to be had. I wouldn’t be surprised if people like Captain Tom are used by these groups.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/02/2021 15:15

Just googled some of his past remarks on his (now blocked) Twitter account

Oh dear Sad

Sounds like the diocese could do with having a quiet word, but good luck with that ... he'll probably turn on them too

Maybe he's thinking of converting to Sikhism? He's done it before (he moved from the Methodist to the Anglican Church apparently).

Dabiral Choudhury raised £150k which is pretty amazing but Captain Tom raised 32 million. I think that's perhaps the difference.

I think they need to remove him ASAP before he causes further damage. Then he will be truly free to have an 'opinion'

Very odd comment.

Sikhism isn't a Christian denomination. Anglicanism and Methodism are.

What motivated you to say that?

Now you are being utterly ridiculous. As though converting from one Christian denomination to another is anything like changing your belief system totally.

I think you're just a GF here for some larks, OP.

No one is that daft.

Comefromaway · 04/02/2021 15:20

@UneFoisAuChalet

Wow. The racists have left Facebook and are now congregating to MN.

Guess what? There’s a whole bunch of us who don’t give a fuck. Blah blah NHS blah blah raised some money for teabags blah blah let’s clap and give him a statue. Blah. Blah. Blah. Nice little old man. Being a pacifist, I absolutely detest war time anything so I avoided him.

You can’t force people to hero worship the man. He didn’t change my life. I think it’s bizarre to say that a 100 year old rich white heterosexual Christian man who jetted off to the Bahamas during a pandemic represents the average Brit.

I don;t actually blame him at his time of life for jetting off to the Bahamas.

But he also had visits from people (shown on TV) back in April when no-one was supposed to be travelling at all and there were no bubbles.

trulydelicious · 04/02/2021 15:21

@WagnerTheWehrWolf

I get a fickle and opportunistic vibe. He seems to be looking for a big enough platform to push his 'ideas' from

No. I don't think that's it.

Try and be more honest.

I am honest, he appears to be fickle changing Churches in the first place

Anyway, as I've said before. His new boss is elderly, white and British. I wonder whether he can stomach that

I'm getting that vibe. Sucked in again Sad

WagnerTheWehrWolf · 04/02/2021 15:29

If you're so befuddled that you can't see the difference between switching religions and switching denominations then you must find life very challenging indeed.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/02/2021 15:31

I think they need to remove him ASAP before he causes further damage. Then he will be truly free to have an 'opinion'

But if they do that there's every chance he may damn them as a bunch of white supremacists too - and who knows, with some of them he might even have a point

No doubt accepting a gay black activist for training in the ministry looked like a terribly good idea when they were trying to show how inclusive they are ... I just wonder if they feel the same way now
