It's worrying how some can harbour so much hate and still be allowed to hold a position in the Church (and fuel division through Twitter)

OP posts:
JaimeLeeCurtains · 04/02/2021 14:51

He shouldn't be in a position of spiritual leadership

Well that's you expressing your opinion. Others disagree.

Let's not pre-judge the Salem Media witch trial, eh?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/02/2021 14:51

How unfortunate to have accusations of racism dragged into even this Sad

I'm another who agrees with the thrust of what he said, but yes, it's a shame he brought race into it. In the context I really don't see that this was necessary, but then TBF I know nothing about the guy

trulydelicious · 04/02/2021 14:51

@WagnerTheWehrWolf

kind of person who wails about 'cancel culture' too

Sure, when only some appear to be 'cancelled' and not others

@Glenchase

How is it "white British nationalism"? It’s not. It could reasonably be called “British nationalism”. But why does anyone need to bring race into it? Only a racist would look at Captain Sir Tom and see his skin colour.
Oh, no, are we back to that deluded "I don't see race" rubbish?
Justforphoto · 04/02/2021 14:53

I find it interesting that it is that very system of white british nationalism that is behind him being able to be vilified like this for making the comment he did. Irrespective of my own view on whether he is right or not without that backdrop his comment would have just been ignored.

With regards to saying if you can see a persons skin colour you are racist I would ask if you can't see or refuse to acknowledge skin colour how do you fight racism?

As I suspected. You actually love cancel culture when it gets rid of pesky people you don't approve of.

Glenchase · 04/02/2021 14:54

Oh, no, are we back to that deluded "I don't see race" rubbish?
Isn’t that what we’re supposed to be doing? Avoiding discrimination and treating everyone equally?

derxa · 04/02/2021 14:54

This was an example of attention seeking from the priest. Stoking division not harmony. Was it kind? Did it help the bereaved family?

Itsnotlikethiswithotherpeople · 04/02/2021 14:55

I can see how Captain Tom now be could be used as a right wing poster boy (entirely without his collusion/approval/support whilst he was alive). That has absolutely nothing to do with him as an individual but is a well worn path for the far right. They did the same with various murdered soldiers and their families actually had to come out to condemn Britain First misusing their son’s image.
That’s the sort of thing that the clergy person was talking about. He wasn’t criticising Captain Tom himself at all.

Glenchase · 04/02/2021 14:55

if you can't see or refuse to acknowledge skin colour how do you fight racism?
You acknowledge it when it’s relevant. In this situation it is absolutely not relevant.

ScrambledSmegs · 04/02/2021 14:56
@ScrambledSmegs

He can't expect people to remain silent if he is the one who decided to jump on the abuse wagon first.

As I said before, tolerance is a two-way street
So you're condoning racist abuse on the grounds of 'he said it first'?

trulydelicious · 04/02/2021 14:59

Does this 'priest' know his boss is elderly, white and British too?

OP posts:
WagnerTheWehrWolf · 04/02/2021 15:00

Why do you keep calling him a priest? He's not a priest. Have you even read the article that's got you in such a tizzy.

Glenchase · 04/02/2021 15:00

So you're condoning racist abuse on the grounds of 'he said it first'?
Can you not see the hypocrisy in racially abusing a group of people then complaining when you receive racial abuse in response? Not saying it’s right, but maybe now he understands how unpleasant it is when someone is racist towards you and he won’t be racist towards others in future.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/02/2021 15:00

Ridiculous opportunistic statement. History of racist remarks

Hang on - as said I know nothing about the guy so I obviously wasn't aware of this

Any chance of some links?

LilyE1234 · 04/02/2021 15:00

Those outraged by the clerics comments, did you voice as much outrage over George Floyds murder? Did you support the BLM movement? Or do you only get offended when it’s white people being targeted?

The comments were foolish and far too soon after the mans death, but the fact that right wing papers such as daily mail/express are the ones pushing the whole state funeral, statues narrative. our own (racist) prime minister is the one encouraging the country to make ‘gestures’ of respect and gratitude to Sir Tom Moore with the nation wide clap, but also said he did not believe in gestures when referring to taking the knee for the BLM movement.

CayrolBaaaskin · 04/02/2021 15:01

Racist abuse is not acceptable from the clergy. Nor is dismissing Capt Tom and those who support him because he is white. If he was trying to make some sort of point against the far right that wasn't at all what he said. It right he should be dealt with properly - racism from the clergy is not acceptable.

JaimeLeeCurtains · 04/02/2021 15:01

@Glenchase

if you can't see or refuse to acknowledge skin colour how do you fight racism? You acknowledge it when it’s relevant. In this situation it is absolutely not relevant.
Well "it" is relevant now on this thread because the OP introduced it.

And I think it is very thought-provoking. If a person claims they "don't see race", how can they see racism?

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 04/02/2021 15:02

@Glenchase

Captain Sir Tom was an inspiring figure who raised funds for the NHS and raised spirits at a time when people were struggling. His skin colour is not relevant to that at all. The fact that this cleric has even brought race into the equation means that HE is the racist. Because he is unable to look past Captain Sir Tom’s skin colour to see that he was a brave gentleman and a figure of hope to EVERYONE.
This.
MonkeyNotOrgangrinder · 04/02/2021 15:03

@Glenchase

He can have an opinion As has been pointed out - no he can’t, not if his opinion is racist and discriminatory.

He was wrong to conclude it was. It was pointed out. He apologized. It's been deleted.
The problem is though, he’s now been outed as a racist. Apologising and deleting doesn’t make him any less of a racist. And I feel it’s inappropriate to have a racist in his position in the church.

Is white nationalism a race now?
WagnerTheWehrWolf · 04/02/2021 15:03

Only racists ever say they 'don't see race'.

trulydelicious · 04/02/2021 15:03

@JaimeLeeCurtains

It was this clergyman who introduce it, not me. Again, have you read the article?

There do seem to be a lot of opinionated people around at the moment who think their controversial views and opinions are so important that they must share them with everyone regardless.

I just wish they'd shut the fuck up and go away.

shabbytabby · 04/02/2021 15:05

Coincidentally Jarel Robinson-Brown has a book coming out (unless it's an even bigger coincidence and someone else with the same name).
The Skipping Sikh, Rajinder Singh, has an MBE, and is held in affection by many people.

trulydelicious · 04/02/2021 15:05

@MonkeyNotOrgangrinder

Is white nationalism a race now

White is a race. He should have stopped at 'nationalism' if he wanted to express his anti-British views only
