Would you take your elderly mum to Sainsbury's

So I'm in such a quandary about this. My DM who is 81 has had both her jabs. She hasn't been out for weeks and weeks and I do her shopping each week when I do mine. She has told me she is coming with me to Sainsbury's next week as it will then be over a week since her booster. She knows she has to wear a mask, hand sanitise and socially distance etc.

I'm still not comfortable with taking her though. I've explained that they don't know if she can still transmit the virus but this is something she desperately wants to do, just to have a little bit of normality again and to be able to do her own shopping. She was very upset when I suggested she shouldn't come.

What would you do?

No

Dereg · 12/01/2021 18:16

No

BorrisBikeIsBrakingRules · 12/01/2021 18:17

Oh sorry, didn't see she's had a vaccine. If she's had the vaccine then yes! Definitely take her! Lucky her she can now be a bit free and get out a bit :)

NoMoreFlowers · 12/01/2021 18:17

I wouldn’t risk it. Take her for a drive in the car if she wants to get out of the house?

Butterflyfluff · 12/01/2021 18:17

No - they’re clamping down on multiple adults shopping together anyway

No one likes this situation but everyone needs to reduce their contact as much as possible and that trip just isn’t necessary

RetailGail · 12/01/2021 18:17

No!

hamsterchump · 12/01/2021 18:18

Yes

NoMoreFlowers · 12/01/2021 18:18

It’s also against Sainsbury’s policy of one adult shopping alone.

RetailGail · 12/01/2021 18:18

Both jabs? That was quick!

Hoppinggreen · 12/01/2021 18:19

My 80 year old sdad has had both jabs already

AlwaysColdHands · 12/01/2021 18:19

No. Most supermarkets asking people to shop alone now anyway

Jobsharenightmare · 12/01/2021 18:21

It isn't just about the jab it is a lockdown and we shouldn't be doing anything unnecessarily.

MrsMiaWallis · 12/01/2021 18:21

No. My mum is in the same position re vaccs. Only 1 adult is allowed in anyway.

I'd like to take my 18 year old daughter shopping tomorrow because she's bored, but only one adult in the supermarket.

kingkuta · 12/01/2021 18:21

Yes of course you should take her.

LIZS · 12/01/2021 18:22

No.

Icequeen01 · 12/01/2021 18:22

She had her first jab in 18th Dec and her 2nd one last Saturday.

I get what you are saying about only one person shopping but we don't shop together. I race round doing mine for the family whilst she poodles along getting her own shopping.

I

Not in my area, infections are still really high and our local hospitals are under massive pressure.
Even with both doses there's still a 5% chance that your mum won't be protected so I'd just keep her out of supermarkets for the next few weeks.

kingkuta · 12/01/2021 18:23

Both adults will be doing their own shopping. She wants to do her own shopping. Its not a little day trip!

MrsMiaWallis · 12/01/2021 18:24

You'd have to stand separately in the queue and pretend you aren't together to get into my Sainsbury's

Soontobe60 · 12/01/2021 18:24

I wouldn’t take my mum. I’d spin it to her that by her going in someone else would have to wait outside!

Undisclosedlocation · 12/01/2021 18:25

In all honesty if she has had her jabs and understands the social distancing requirements isn’t it her decision to make? Her desire for a bit of normal life for her mental health seems fairly reasonable to me

At what point would you feel it appropriate if not now?

Houggbfhhbdfg · 12/01/2021 18:25

Absolutely, yes I would. I would never deny an elderly person the right to live freely in the world. That is what she wishes to do and the law says she can. She’s a free person

redcarbluecar · 12/01/2021 18:25

Yeah I would

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 12/01/2021 18:26

Yes I would take her. She is an adult, she can make her own decisions. I would be fucking pissed off if my child told me at 81 I couldn't go to the shops.

Rainb0wDrops · 12/01/2021 18:27

I probably would but I'd ask her to wait at least another week or two (partly so the vaccine has more time to work and partly so I could see what's happening with case numbers)
I can see why she would want to have some independence back.
