CEV won’t be fully protected until May onwards 😕

Woke up to news that Oxford has been approved - great!

The entire family were hoping this might mean my CEV parents would be fully protected in February, as the online calculator showed they would be called for their first jab at the end of January (had Oxford vaccinations started last week of Dec).

But now that they are introducing a 12 week wait between both jabs, they won’t receive their first jab until early Feb and won’t get full protection until their second jab in early May.

I just can’t believe this.

This bastard fucking nightmare feels never ending.

One dose gives a good level of protection.

There is no such thing as "complete protection".

I'm CEV and have no problem with the way they are rolling out.

sonicbook · 30/12/2020 09:13

From what I understand the first one will keep people alive and out of hospital so rather than full efficacy the gov are just going for whatever eases the strain on NHS quickest. I think that seems okay but I'm no scientist/ expert tbh.

nether · 30/12/2020 09:14

Yes, it's a long time to wait, and I think quite a lot of people's hopes have been dashed by this.

Especially the younger CEV, who knew there were millions ahead of them in the queue, but still had hopes of full protection somewhat earlier than the change from 21 days to 12 weeks before part 2

Mousehole10 · 30/12/2020 09:15

You’ve got to look at it as a good thing for the entire population. One jab still gives a good level of protection, and prevents against severe illness too. Getting this first to as many people as possible will cut the deaths and hospitalisation faster than giving less people two jabs. It will mean we get out of this current situation quicker and more people will have access to it. Yes it will mean your parents won’t get the higher protection until later but they will still have some protection.

starfro · 30/12/2020 09:16

No one in the trial who got at least one dose needed hospital.

Why can't they have the Pfizer one that's being rolled out at the moment? The wait between doses for that is only 21 days.

FleeceNavidadToEwe · 30/12/2020 09:16

Listen to the science.
The first does offers good protection. The second dose adds further protection.
But by delaying the second dose MORE people can get protection more QUICKLY.

So it is a good thing for many many more people.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 30/12/2020 09:17

I think the decision is based on the fact that the first dose protects you and the second makes the protection last long term. Sarah Gilbert said nobody was hospitalised after their first dose.

No, that’s increasing to 12 weeks too.

🤔 I can't see your point. They'll get the first vaccine soon (which affords some protection) and delaying the 2nd jab makes it more effective overall.
There isn't any bad news here.
Bad news would have been that it wasn't approved.

Bagelsandbrie · 30/12/2020 09:17

I am in the extremely clinically vulnerable group and I think it’s fantastic news! The first jab alone starts to offer protection within 2 weeks and after that offers 60% protection- that’s amazing. Then 90% after the second jab whilst being safer and easier to store / roll out than the other vaccine. We’ve waited this long, a few more months to change the world is okay by me.

I would love to know how many CEV over 75s there were in the trial!

@Acti when is it increasing to 12 weeks? My PIL are booked in for their second dose on 6 January which is only 21 days after the first dose.

They’re proposing the Pfizer vaccine is given with a 12 week wait too now. One dose is fine to start with.
HazeyJaneII · 30/12/2020 09:20

My 10 year old medically vulnerable ds, and the children I know in a similar position, won't be eligible for a vaccine for the foreseeable future. It is worrying.

nether · 30/12/2020 09:23

Yes it will mean your parents won’t get the higher protection until later but they will still have some protection

Why are you assuming posters are talking about their parents?

Yes, my direct household will get out minds round the idea (just as we've coped with everything else) and yes I can see the logic.

But I can't pretend that the level of disappointment does not exist. It's been fucking hard, and a further 2 months you did it anticipate just as the end might have been in sight is also hard

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/12/2020 09:23

I think it's brilliant as a CEV person. It means that more people are protected some, and the virus in the community will drop as a bigger whole (as long as people behave), relieving pressure on the nhs, allowing other medical needs to be attended to.

Brunt0n · 30/12/2020 09:25

Now really isn’t the time to be selfish. The more people who get the first dose, the quickest, is best

CancerCovidQuestion · 30/12/2020 09:25

I am CEV and I live with primary school age children so I'm very pleased if this means all CEV people can get some level of immunity sooner. The end is very much in sight now surely, May isn't so very far off - let's hope they do what's necessary for the maximum number of people to get there!

scaevola · 30/12/2020 09:27

AFAIK, no CEV but yes to elderly

Working out what is safe and best for CEV has been done by assessing the pathways for the vaccine to work alongside the pathways affected by the co-morbidity.

I hope there might be consideration given to vaccine schedule for those with CEV level co-morbitities with aim of keeping it to original timings (also possibly testing this group for response). This is not just for the direct benefit of that group, but because it is also important research that will benefit all recipients and all future development.

NoSleepInTheHeat · 30/12/2020 09:28

Kind of a selfish POV. Better have more people with some level of protection asap than only a subset with full protection, no?

RoseAndRose · 30/12/2020 09:28

(as long as people behave)

Yeah, right
