Does anyone think london will go in to tier 3 before Xmas?

OP posts:
KylieKoKo · 08/12/2020 12:07

I think probably. Maybe it will save some transmission before the Christmas free for all and will all be worth it ...

Extra22 · 08/12/2020 16:39

I think so. I think it should, cases in my part of London have increased hugely, which is worrying as we're in a bubble with my elderly mother and she wants to spend time with us at Christmas (she's in an area nearby with slightly lower cases).

cologne4711 · 08/12/2020 17:56

I just read an article saying that it now has the fastest growing infection rate in the country, so it's possible.

Thegirlhasnoname · 08/12/2020 18:05

If it were anywhere else in the country then I would say definitely. As it is (and as a slightly cynical northerner) I would say that the politicians will do everything in their power to not make it tier 3.

AcornAutumn · 08/12/2020 18:08

Yes
I think they don’t want to have busy outdoor areas and issues on NYE.

Wakemeuuuup · 08/12/2020 18:22

That would put us in tier 3 for both my son's birthday and mine so I really hope not 🤬

mrshoho · 08/12/2020 18:38

Yes. Our borough is now the highest it's been and so many schools affected.

TheRubyRedshoes · 08/12/2020 19:09

If it does, can people in tier three leave London for the day?

Hellomoonstar · 08/12/2020 19:13

No, I don't think we will go in tier 3, until 24th December.

PleasantVille · 08/12/2020 19:13

Of course you can Grin

How would anyone enforce that9

MarshaBradyo · 08/12/2020 19:13

No. Maybe afterwards

What are you planning in tier 2?
BikeRunSki · 08/12/2020 19:15

Of course not, the bar in the House of Commons would have to close.

MarshaBradyo · 08/12/2020 19:18

What’s the situation in London hospitals?

ceeveebee · 08/12/2020 19:19

I think it’s least some of the London boroughs should be going into tier 3 on 16 December. London as a region has the highest rate in the country, and it’s growing whereas most others are on the way down. 19 of the London boroughs are in the top 100. Any other region would have been put into tier 3 by now.

Haventbeenthere · 08/12/2020 19:33

From what it says on the BBC website here the central London boroughs have fairly low rates. The worst rates are the eastern boroughs. It seems really hard on all the theatres, pubs, restaurants, etc in Westminster and Camden to have to close if they have lowish rates, just because other parts of the city are high. I wonder if they'll have separate tiers for boroughs. Its easy to travel around, so I'm sure people would dodge the rules, but then that must also be an issue in other areas that are just outside tier 3.

Susanwouldntlikeit · 08/12/2020 19:37

Are people actually still bothering to pay attention to tiers? Terrible for businesses, but people will not put up with this nonsense and just meet up with friends anyway indoors instead.

Sadly you have to if you can’t eat out. I think it’s dire if businesses have to close only after a couple of weeks.
DianaT1969 · 08/12/2020 19:45

It would devastate the food supply chain to hospitality, as restaurants and cafes will have placed orders for the next couple of weeks, expecting that this is their chance to recoup something following the lockdown.
I hoped they'd take all other areas out of tier 3 to give those restaurants a chance. If transmission is mainly in schools and family homes, it feels like we're taking a sledgehammer to crack a walnut.

I think you're right, a lot of people are ingnoring the rules, but for businesses Tier 3 means a huge loss of revenue. I work in an arts-related job and feel really sad for theatres, galleries, museums, etc that would have to close again having already lost so much revenue and worked really hard to get back up and running with Covid-secure measures in place. It seems especially tough if they are actually in boroughs with fairly low rates.

Other figures in Essex are:

Southend's rate rose from 115.8 to 176.4 with 323 new cases confirmed.
Castle Point's rate fell from 178.1 to 175.9, with 159 new cases
Rochford's rate rose from 132.8 to 160.2 with 140 new cases
In Thurrock, the rate rose from 207.6 to 224.3 with 362 new cases
Colchester rose to and 89.4 rate with 174 cases, from a rate of 67.3, (131 cases) the week before
Tendring's rate rose from 55.3 to 66.9 with 102 cases confirmed
Maldon jumped from a 115.5 rate (75 cases), from a rate of 58.5 (38 cases) the week before
Braintree's rate fell from 120.6 to 107.5 with 164 new cases
In Chelmsford, the rate rose to 111 with 198 new cases

nancy75 · 08/12/2020 19:57

If London needs to go into tier 3 they should just do it now, why wait for an arbitrary date to make the change?
I live in London, numbers in my area shot up last week, dd’s school has sent home all but years 11,12 & 13. Meanwhile we have 10 days of will we or won’t we hanging over businesses that might or might not close.
The reaction of the govt is always too slow & too late.

Yes. I’ve got confused on the furlough extension but I think it might make more sense to be closed really. I suppose it depends on the individual place and how they make most of their money.

I’d have hoped they’d place orders up to the 16th because after that, they’d have 3 days to use it up I think? The announcement comes three days before?

You can’t really separate out London boroughs easily unless you’re asking restaurants and theatres etc to check proof of address and ID.

The positive cases include so many people who have had a very mild illness.

ceeveebee please could you share a link to that table, I can’t read the picture you’ve uploaded snd am interested in the figures
