Re comparisons to figures in London and the Northern cities

Bob Moran did this cartoon in late summer, I think

The problem with all of bob’s cartoons is they are true!

Oh hang on, not sure that links to the right one

@Jourdain11

Our borough has very low rates, as do the nearby ones. Like others have said, it is harsh if you're the owner that café in Fulham which has to close despite such low rates.

At the same time, it is worrying that the rates in parts of the city are so high and climbing fast. A few weeks back, an MP recommended that they could chop it up into 4 zones and tier the zones according to the infection rates within them. It might be the best option. But they would need to use a lot of police resources to enforce it.

There are 6 boroughs with rates lower than Fulham which have been lumped into tier 3 because the govt. refused to look at tiering on a borough by borough basis, instead going for whole counties (with the exception of Slough I believe). The zoning idea sounds like a good solution
Parker231 · 08/12/2020 22:24

The next review date is 16 December and yes I think the whole of London will go into tier 3 and some of the northern cities ie Manchester will drop to tier 2. Cases are rising in London and dropping across most of the rest of the country.

Oh i hope not

Supposed to be at the theatre on the 29th

dreamingbohemian · 08/12/2020 22:37

I know it's impractical but I wish they could separate London into zones.

I've never even been to the worst affected boroughs (Havering??) and no reason to go, it feels a million miles away

I was wondering what theatres would do about refunds this time

I had two shows booked in the first lockdown and they refunded but I’m not sure if they might start only offering credit for future shows.

It's true! I reckon there are at least 5 boroughs that I have never, ever been to.
Parker231 · 08/12/2020 22:49

It’s the same with Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle and Birmingham. All huge cities but all in tier 3 and not split into boroughs or councils.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 08/12/2020 22:49

acorn

I haven’t got a massive issue with a credit but I appreciate that other people may have had a number of things cancelled over a few months

1990s · 08/12/2020 22:51

I’m confused about why rates are still rising when we only got out of “full lockdown” a week ago, and how Tier 3 would help that situation when full lockdown didn’t.

For people asking about why London isn’t in Tier 3 and places with smaller towns and lower rates are, it’s about hospital capacity. London has a lot of hospitality capacity, rural Devon/Derbyshire etc don’t, so you go into the higher tiers more quickly.

London is like, triple the size of the next largest city (Birmingham), to be fair.
TiddyTid · 08/12/2020 22:53

I've seen a few articles that Suffolk may go into tier 3.

Parker231 · 08/12/2020 22:54

Rates have dropped loads in the areas in tier 3 - some as much as 30+% but gone up significantly in the areas in tier 2.

Flowersinthewindowstill · 08/12/2020 22:57

I hope not as I'm living in a borough with one of the lowest infection rates. The difficulty with London also is that to travel to certain boroughs from mine it would take almost as long as me travelling to my hometown of Sheffield so it does feel a little crazy Confused to treat a city that is the largest in the country so homogeneously.

RandomMess · 08/12/2020 23:13

@Flowersinthewindowstill but they are treating whole counties homogeneously 🤷🏽‍♀️ the very rural areas of Lancashire have consistently low rates but are stuck in Tier 3 due to towns an hours drive by motorway away have excessively high rates 🤦🏼‍♀️, the 2 counties bordering us are Tier 2 with higher rates than us and use our hospitals...

AcornAutumn · 08/12/2020 23:19

Is that political? Mum’s in Essex and I’ve heard comments about the council leader living in Suffolk, at one point Suffolk was a lower tier than Essex wasn’t it? And people were saying “it doesn’t affect him because he doesn’t even live in Essex”.
Daisy03 · 08/12/2020 23:22

@TheRubyRedshoes

If it does, can people in tier three leave London for the day?
If you go from tier 3 from tier 2, you still follow the rules of tier 3, but from tier 3 you're not advised to go into tier 2 for anything except work, health, etc
TeaBanditTeej · 08/12/2020 23:34

@Wakemeuuuup

That would put us in tier 3 for both my son's birthday and mine so I really hope not 🤬
Typical selfish behaviour

We have rising cases and I think possibly rural hospitals are getting stretched. That, and I think putting everyone in tier 3 will help before the 5 day Christmas "bonanza" which will inevitably cause higher cases!

AxMan76 · 09/12/2020 00:36

Yes, without a doubt

katy1213 · 09/12/2020 01:16

Felt sad for all the empty pubs I walked past tonight. I'd have gone in for a pre-theatre drink, but I didn't want a 'substantial meal' and clearly, nor did anyone else.

PirateCatQueen · 09/12/2020 04:07

Yes

VashtaNerada · 09/12/2020 04:30

If we need to be in Tier 3, we should. I’ll miss having the option of going to a restaurant but so be it. I really hope it would mean the tubes would clear out again. They were empty a few months ago but now are back to being packed again. I think public transport needs to be looked into fairly urgently.

joystir59 · 09/12/2020 04:46

What is the situation in the London hospitals? That's the deciding factor imo
