Ooo new variant of covid in London and SE that spreading quicker than the current most significant one

Delatron · 14/12/2020 15:43

New variant is worrying as they are implying it’s spreading quicker? They think.

biologicalhazard · 14/12/2020 15:44

oh god what does this mean for the vaccines??

Delatron · 14/12/2020 15:45

They think vaccine will still work but I guess they can’t know for sure?

PurpleHoodie · 14/12/2020 15:45

Ohhh. Variant.

What will be the efficiency of the current vaccines....?

RedToothBrush · 14/12/2020 15:45

Nothing. Don't worry.

They think. Anyway.

Mutations so far have been on a section of the virus which the vaccine doesn't act on.
tootyfruitypickle · 14/12/2020 15:48

Shouldn’t mean anything, the virus can shift a bit and vaccine still works.

Parker231 · 14/12/2020 15:49

So most of the major cities are now in tier 3 unless some of the northern cities drop down to tier 2 now their rates have dropped so much. Friends in Manchester are desperate to go into tier 2 as they have been under restrictions since March with the exception of a three week period.

I am one of those people!

Absolutely doing my nut in Grin

myhobbyisouting · 14/12/2020 15:58

It's not just in cities. We've got areas in tier 3 where there are no cases now here in Lancashire.

But they won't carve us up despite us being geographically distant. Absolute piss take tbh

Why have you posted like this? Sounds like you are excited about it? Seriously there are people there are people losing everything and you are pleased to post a scaremongering post?
ineedaholidaynow · 14/12/2020 16:08

It has just been announced on the news, why shouldn't someone post it @Mousehole10

Mousehole10 · 14/12/2020 16:09

To everyone worrying about the new strain. There have been many new strains since the virus was first discovered. The vaccine works on all these strains, a few months ago there was at least three strains circulating in the UK and the vaccine works on all of them. There is no reason to believe the vaccine won't work on this new one but of course it is being analysed to check this, they would be stupid not to. However all messages coming out so far are positive and saying it is very unlikely that it won't still work.

It's the way it was posted, with an exited 'ooo'. There are so many people who are delighting in lockdowns, further restrictions and the idea that there might not have been a vaccine. Some people are actually pleased when bad things happen and like to scaremonger and see people's reactions. It can be really detrimental to some of the posters here who have been seriously struggling with mental health through all this.
Whiskyinajar · 14/12/2020 16:12

The new varient might be milder....we don't know anything yet.

Whiskyinajar · 14/12/2020 16:13

I'm in Basildon, looks like we are definitely going to Tier 3 but it's been on the cards for the last two weeks. Sad

Oh piss off.

It was just interesting.

(And then three seconds later said it wasn't something to worry about but of course you ignore that post)

And why did Matt Hancock say it? You don't seem to be chastising him for it.

Go take it up with him. I was just repeating what he was saying.

For goodness sake.

RedToothBrush · 14/12/2020 16:16

Exactly.

Its perfectly possible. Indeed I think I've seen previously that it tends to be the case that viruses that spread quicker tend to be less severe because its almost as if they have been designed to compensate one for the other.

We don't know at all what the implications are.

Thats precisely why its been reported to the WHO

Chewbecca · 14/12/2020 16:22

Stupid question but will restaurants reopen for the 5 days of Christmas if you're in Tier 3? Assuming not. Feel sorry for anyone who had a booking to eat out and now has to cook.
