Worried that the military and NHS are on standby to deliver vaccines

Just heard this on the BBC news at 6.Does this mean the military will be injecting people? Will it be mandatory for certain groups? This is rather worrying.

No vaccine in the U.K. has ever been mandatory, the army are helping to deliver the vaccine due to the sheer size of the infrastructure needed.

You may want to seek help for your anxiety OP

Cyw2018 · 10/11/2020 18:11

No it means the military are awesome at logistics and their soldiers are capable of adapting to and fulfilling new roles readily.

Sheogorath · 10/11/2020 18:11

Yeah, they're going to be sticking needles in machine guns and firing them at people. Hmm

No it wont be manditory it would have to go through a lot of processes to be legally allowed to be used against peoples will.

But, whats wrong with the military administering injections if it came to it?

helpfulperson · 10/11/2020 18:12

No. It just means alot of people are needed to do it and when we need manpower we turn to the military. Many of them will be medics, advanced first aiders etc. Those that aren't will be trained and under the supervision of medics.

lunar1 · 10/11/2020 18:12

It's not going to be mandatory to have it, but I honestly think life choices will be restricted for people who don't. I think certain countries will make it compulsory for entry unless medically exempt, same for mass gatherings.

I really wouldn't worry about the army administering it, it's really not difficult to learn to give an injection safely. They work in positions of responsibility and trust, they are highly trained and adaptable.

SometimesMaybe · 10/11/2020 18:12

What are you worried about OP?

Brighterthansunflowers · 10/11/2020 18:12

YABU and ridiculous peddling this anti-vax nonsense

Surely you can see that the military are helping with logistics and scale, not to grab people pin them down and jab them with a needle!

Get a grip.

maryhadalittle · 10/11/2020 18:12

Wouldn't the military be managing the logistical side during mass vaccination? Carrying, unboxing, crowd control and generally assisting the smooth run.

muddledmidget · 10/11/2020 18:13

The vaccine won't be mandatory, but the military are the best resource we have to deliver a vaccination programme of this size, in terms of the logistics of setting things up, transporting the vaccine to the vaccination centres (particularly if it's the Pfizer vaccine that has to be kept frozen) and have a large number of medically trained personnel to assist with the vaccinations.

Personally I'd rather have them than Serco involved in the vaccination programme

Gancanny · 10/11/2020 18:13

There has been no indication that it will be mandatory.

The army have been drafted in for the same reason that they've been used to help with testing - they have experience of running large scale logistics and they have appropriately trained staff available as and when needed.

Sycamoretrees · 10/11/2020 18:13

To be perfectly honest I don't care who administers my vaccine shots as long as they hurry up, and no it won't be compulsory, if you don't want yours then that'll just mean that those of us who do will get it faster. Sorry to be blunt but the madness of this year needs to end.

Ffsnosexallowed · 10/11/2020 18:13

That's a bit of a leap to make op. No, the military are not involved so that they can force people to have the vaccine. Confused

DynamoKev · 10/11/2020 18:13

This is rather worrying.
No it isn't.

ohidoliketobe · 10/11/2020 18:13

What Cyw2018 said.

OP - what exactly is it you're worrying about?

BurningRose · 10/11/2020 18:13

My comment is not as odd as it seems. Some legislation was passed recently allowing non medical professionals to administer vaccines of needed.

BurningRose · 10/11/2020 18:15

Ps I had a positive covid test a few months ago so I won't need a vaccine. I now have natural immunity.

I worry about creeping authoritarianism though.

Injections are super easy to administer you dont need any qualifications to do it. Hence why diabetics can inject themselves and anyone can administer an epi pen in an emergency. For that matter phlebotomy is also one that take a short training class and doesn't require medical qualifications at all. So dont worry about that side.

For God's sake! Hmm

She's not wrong though OP. Your reaction is a bit extreme - there have been no suggestions that the vaccine is either compulsory. What exactly is your concern about the army assisting with the roll out?
Ffsnosexallowed · 10/11/2020 18:15

But they'd still be trained ffs. Your comment is not just odd - its bonkers

Gancanny · 10/11/2020 18:16

Non-medical is not the same thing as untrained.

And your immunity will wane in a few months, it doesn't last.

BurningRose · 10/11/2020 18:16

I don't have free floating anxiety so I don't need any help. I have anxiety about trusting our government though! As do many of the population.

I was wondering today if non medical personnel would be drafted in (after being trained) to assist with administering the vaccines. I would totally sign up for it if they eanted volunteers, and it wouldn't bother me if a non medical person did mine.
