Do we think this will be a vaccine update, a change to rules or just waffle?

I get that people want good news. But, in the long-run, it's much crueller to give people false hope. We have been here many times before - with HIV, type 1 diabetes and many other conditions. A vaccine shows promise in the lab, but turns out not to be effective.

No one has ever developed an effective vaccine against a coronavirus. Unlike quite a lot of my colleagues, I do think we will get one against Covid, because of the sheer level of resource being thrown at it. But we are not there yet. If we are lucky, the current vaccines will turn out to have some protective effect, and can then be refined. That in itself would be a huge achievement in the time scale.

April called, it wants it's facts back. Here in November everything has moved on. These are the results of enormous scale Phase 3 trials. We almost certainly have a highly effective coronavirus vaccine now. The only reason we never had one before is because it wasn't needed and billions aren't going to be pumped into the development of vaccines that would gain us almost nothing.

And also maybe be a teensy bit less Euro/Anglocentric because there has been two coronavirus vaccines being used for mass vaccination in China for 4 months already and Sinopharm's in particular appears to be highly effective.

What fabulous news. Fucking brilliant. Yes yes yes yes. Fucking yes.grin

Calm down!! It's only a vaccine that may or may not work. Anyone would think it's a win on the lottery.

If course it’s worth celebrating. It was really the only way out of this hole.

Sir John Bell speaks well. Not sure why some are still on downers about it but he was on BBC world at one.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 09/11/2020 14:49

@3littlewords

Ideally I'd love a " we've got a vaccine coming, bare with us until the end of the year and come 1st Jan life can resume as normal " wishful thinking I know Grin

In reality I think it will be waffle waffle waffle, stay at home unless you can't stay at home blah blah blah oh and dont forget to sing happy birthday whilst washing hands, continued waffle waffle waffle

He probably will say this - but not sure it will be true...

Possibly celebrated when it's known 100% to work. All this shouting "yes!" and nobody knows at all what this press conference is going to be about.

Whatever comes out of Johnson's mouth is unreliable to say the least.

Phil it’s Pfizer news today not Johnson
Ugzbugz · 09/11/2020 14:55

They said a vaccine on bbc news but said people will be excited and looking forward to normal but it wont be, it will be a new normal, what the actual fuck does that mean?

funkyfruitloops · 09/11/2020 14:56

Everyone is losing their shit. Which is showing in many different ways on MN lately...

Be kind x

I am baffled as to how you think the trial results were achieved if it doesn’t work. Magic? Good luck?
MercyBooth · 09/11/2020 15:00

Exactly @LindaEllen Im not one of those who likes to leave everything to the last minute (Boris judging people by his own standards there) but i also dont want to spend on something that might not happen. If he leaves it too long i shall do the latter and keep my purse shut.

TheKeatingFive · 09/11/2020 15:03

Hmm, so who should we pay attention to, the CEO of Pfizer or the google immunologists on mumsnet? Grin

kittensarecute · 09/11/2020 15:04

@yawnsvillex

On a side note.

Do you think with a successful vaccine this means that face masks, social distancing, scrubbing hands with sanitiser will be faded out? Or are all of those here to stay regardless?

I can live with sanitiser and don't even mind masks but please, please let social distancing be ditched at the earliest opportunity.
Crakeandoryx · 09/11/2020 15:04

I think 90% effective for a first vaccine in less than 12 months is incredible and really is fabulous news. It's a glimmer of light that we do have options.

I really do hope that it can be rolled out well and for those who are vulnerable to have this on the horizon is surely the first bit of good news they've had in a very stressful worrying time.

Whatever Boris has to say I really hope the country can see the positives. This is just one vaccine when others are also expecting the Oxford vaccine very soon.

It's 40m doses, 10m to be with us by Christmas. I think this is fabulous and a really positive move.

CallmeFP · 09/11/2020 15:07

The excuse that he was duped into a lockdown and how it’s all their fault Wink

It is known to work. You may have become confused by the mention of it only working on a percentage of people (90% I believe)

Also you're confused in thinking Boris made this himself in Downing Street. Pfizer is one of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies.

For completeness Boris is also not the one who invented the virus, he didn't order the world wide reaction, he didn't invent lock-downs and he isn't a secret NWO lizard.

EmNetta · 09/11/2020 15:10

Thanks to Stealth Polar Bear and Isadora Quagmire.

Tillymintsmama · 09/11/2020 15:16

Are you all really going to be queuing up for a vaccine?? I'm not an anti-vaxxer by any means but I will be taking my chances with this one.

FourTeaFallOut · 09/11/2020 15:16

Fuck, yes.

StealthPolarBear · 09/11/2020 15:16

Yes, when it's available for low risk non health care workers ill be first in the queue

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 09/11/2020 15:17

Yes as soon as I am eligible.
