Do we think this will be a vaccine update, a change to rules or just waffle?

To tell us that furlough has been cancelled as some people can now have a vaccine.

bathsh3ba · 09/11/2020 15:28

I think it probably is most likely to be the vaccine news as nothing else seems to have been leaked. But there's part of me that wonders if there's something more - doesn't really seem worth a Boris press conference when it's already all over the news. Not long to find out, I guess.
Vaccines at this stage are a red herring. There is no evidence that any of them protect against Covid. They provoke an immune response, but that's not the same thing. About 9 out of 10 vaccines that reach this stage of development turn out to be useless. If the current vaccines make any difference, it is probably marginal and short-lasting.

I think it probably does make sense to offer the vaccine to very vulnerable people on the off-chance that they work. We wouldn't normally do that but, given how dangerous Covid is for the elderly/vulnerable, it's justifiable to offer them the vaccine in the hope it might reduce risk to some extent. But the current vaccines are not going to get life back to normal for the rest of us.

I think an effective vaccine will probably be developed, but we are not there yet. It is cruel - but sadly typical of Johnson - to offer people false hope.
Please everyone ignore this. I work in the vaccine field and its entirely misleading. So tired of people spreading misinformation.

More of this.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 09/11/2020 15:31

Just seen on BBC that it’s Van Tam and a military guy up with Bojo today so it’s got to be a vaccine update and an update on how the testing in Liverpool went

@Thingstodotoday so sorry, my bad. I get it now. I didn't realise it was a quote. I will try to get it removed.

sashagabadon · 09/11/2020 15:35

Yes it is Hmm
A disinformation campaign targeting Mumsnet perhaps

Hopeisnotastrategy · 09/11/2020 15:35

Also you're confused in thinking Boris made this himself in Downing Street.

I have a lovely image of young Boris with his Junior Scientist set. 🤣🤣🤣

Tyzz · 09/11/2020 15:37

Are you all really going to be queuing up for a vaccine?

I have my sleeve rolled up ready.

I won't be top of the list but as ECV and over 60 I will at least be in the queue.
Also happy to wear masks and gel forever but desperate to hug my (adult) DC again.

Aylaaaaaaa · 09/11/2020 15:37

Christ some of you lot couldn't be happy if you tried could you.

Surprised no one has yet popped up with "but mink covid will make this ineffective anyway".

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 09/11/2020 15:41

‘. But there's part of me that wonders if there's something more - doesn't really seem worth a Boris press conference when it's already all over the news. ‘

I would think he wants to associate himself with the good news.
And he is very keen on his Operation Moonshot thing so he will want to have a little chat about that too. And might they be announcing which other towns will be next for the mass testing.

likeamillpond · 09/11/2020 15:43

Let's just hope the new (mink) strain doesn't take off.
Don't think there's a vaccine for that.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 09/11/2020 15:43

Maybe he wasn’t careful enough with his samples and that’s how he caught it.
likeamillpond · 09/11/2020 15:43

Surprise over

Rabbitholebonkers · 09/11/2020 15:44

@Aylaaaaaaa

The doom merchants will be recoiling in horror, at this positive development I should imagine.

MrsMichaelPalin · 09/11/2020 15:47

Hang on, you can’t hold him responsible for ppe and track and trace and then not give credit for the good stuff too

Okay.

Meanwhile, at the University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Herr Professor Dr Boris Johnson, announced his mRNA-based vaccine candidate, BNT162b2, has been successful against SARS-CoV-2. Herr Professor Dr Boris Johnson, in his spare time, also acts Prime Minister of the UK and this fantastic news has now proven all those who previously considered him a lazy useless sod to be completely and utterly wrong.

Enough credit, sashagabadon?

Aylaaaaaaa · 09/11/2020 15:47

Oh look, right on cue.

Even as a complete pessimist, I find this post unnecessarily gloomy. A vaccine doesn't need to be 100% effective to make our lives more bearable.
BiggerBoat1 · 09/11/2020 15:49

Mostly waffle. Bit of bluster.

Thingstodotoday · 09/11/2020 15:49

@TheWorstShed no worries. I realised as soon as I posted that I hadn’t quoted properly. I just had the rage!

Portillista · 09/11/2020 16:03

I hope it's "an essay on why lifelong Conservative voters will never vote Conservative again".

I am, and I won't.

TheKeatingFive · 09/11/2020 16:10

I expect it will be ... ‘there’s a vaccine, hooray’

Then ... ‘as the bearer of good news, love me, love me, love me‘

Unsure33 · 09/11/2020 16:11

well the financial markets apparently disagree with you miserable lot . its had a bit of a boost as the vaccine has had good results and will be rolled out soon.

So although you lot love love love to Boris bash on a regular basis ( using the worldwide pandemic as an excuse ) we might be one of the first countries to start vaccinating .

LemonTT · 09/11/2020 16:12

Amazing how the deniers and dementors are equally upset at good news that we can actually find a feasible strategy in the fight back to normality in a humane way.

The deniers lose the argument to just let it rip because continued suppression is now a viable response if we the majority of people vaccinated by spring.

The dementors have to accept that we can look forward to life after the second wave.
