Are we heading for another national lockdown

Do you think we are going in the same direction as France and Germany? And do you think schools will stay open if we do?

OP posts:
meow1989 · 30/10/2020 16:24

I think probably, yes. And I'd rather do it now and accept if its not worked by Christmas than not do it and be locked down at Christmas regardless.

Schools are trickier I think they will (well should) try to shut everything else (pubs etc) to keep them open.

covetingthepreciousthings · 30/10/2020 16:26

I really don't know, I was convinced we were but they seem intent on sticking with the tiers.. so who knows at this stage.

I'm not sure the tiers will work, I live in a tier 1 area but we have all the day trippers and holiday makers visiting from tier 3 areas.

ilovesooty · 30/10/2020 16:28

France and Germany have very different measures in place.

This tier stuff is ridiculous and ineffective. National measures are the only thing that make sense to me, including addressing transmission in educational settings, but of course all pupils in school is the hill Johnson has chosen to die on.

TheSeedsOfADream · 30/10/2020 16:31

Probably yes. About a month too late as usual.
We've just had a curfew imposed, (Italy) and schools in my region are now closed until end Nov. We're expecting more restrictions soon. 68 cases in a town of 100,000.

Sirius99 · 30/10/2020 16:31

I hope not, it seems the last lockdown was a waste of time, what is the government going to do this time during the lockdown to stop it rising again when lockdown is over ?

TheMostHappy · 30/10/2020 16:32

Completely pointless doing it if schools are still open - will still be mixing with 30+ other households per day.

shesellsseashells99 · 30/10/2020 16:34

We need one in my opinion. People need to stay in their areas at least. It's all so wishy washy and the government need to be transparent.

This. I want to scream it from the rooftops. Just look at the increasing positivity in years 7-11. I used to say blended learning but think we need to lockdown with secondary schools closed now.
Are we heading for another national lockdown
Newnamenewopenme · 30/10/2020 16:39

I think we missed a trick with half term. I think we need a lock down on everything but doctors/hospitals and supermarkets. No going out at all for 3 weeks, it would be awful but surely it will help.

meow1989 · 30/10/2020 16:39

@themosthappy I suppose the way to look at if is if schools are kept open, children would be mixing with 30 other households.

But if schools are the only thing open it reduces the additional mixing like:

  • pubs - maybe 30 other households?
  • restaurants - as above
  • soft plays/cinemas/bowling etc 10-20 other households?
Etc, so potentially cutting down exposure to around 60-70 extra households a week assuming you do each once. Plus the exposure at school is to the same people and easily tracable.

(Im just saying why I think they'll make that decision, as it is im high risk, ds is at jursery and dh a teacher so I do understand the very real concern)

WindChimeTinkle · 30/10/2020 16:43

Ffs. No more fucking lockdowns. The NHS needs a functioning economy to survive.

toptreeroots1 · 30/10/2020 16:43

I think so but I think they will try to keep primary schools open for the time being to.

Who knows though 🤷‍♀️ all this speculation over something we have no control over

MJMG2015 · 30/10/2020 16:46

Of course it wasn't a waste of time. That's such a daft thing to say. Just look at the way the cases/deaths dropped in that time, the problem was opening too much, too soon & pretending schools would be fine.

Plus obviously, our 'world beating' track & trace - being utterly fucking useless.

Yes, I think we need another proper lockdown including schools.

As was said at the beginning, until there's an effective vaccine this is going to need to be like a pressure cooker having the steam let out a bit at a time than closed tightly.

It really shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. Including Boris.

They don't want to lose face & admit transmission in schools us a huge problem, but they're going to have to risk the NHS being overwhelmed and a huge death rate.

Letsleepingdogslie8 · 30/10/2020 16:47

Perhaps Westminster will watch to see what the impact is from the national lockdowns in the devolved nations. Or just do whatever Fuehrer Cummings decrees.

Suzi888 · 30/10/2020 16:48

Yes I think we will Sad so fed up of it all.

Numberblock7 · 30/10/2020 16:48

Yes, but it won’t be called a lockdown. And I think primary schools will remain open.

Augustbreeze · 30/10/2020 16:51

But pubs, restaurants, bowling (ok let's not include soft play!) can all be made relatively safe if it is enforced properly.

Whereas the government refuses to do this for schools. The very reason why they're easier to trace is because children are in the bubbles (of greatly more than 30 in secondaries) for 6 hours a day 5 days a week. This perfectly transmitting the virus to each other and to and from staff.

lunar1 · 30/10/2020 16:54

We need to do something. For the people who think it's pointless, every week that passes we learn more about the virus and improve treatment, we hopefully get closer to a vaccine, we prevent nhs appointments having to be cancelled.

Preventing the virus running rampant is essential.

JacobReesMogadishu · 30/10/2020 16:54

A lockdown with schools staying open won’t work and will crucify the economy for nothing.

Either do it properly or don’t bother at all....and I genuinely have no idea which is better. I’m scared of the next 30 years of a fucked up economy probably more than I am of catching Covid.

PotteringAlong · 30/10/2020 16:58

I think we will have another lockdown and I don’t think they will close schools and that will be a complete waste of time.

I would close all school years apart from year 11 and year 13. Let those in with proper social distancing.

StealthPolarBear · 30/10/2020 17:01

Yes I think we are. I think there will be an announcement a week on monday

Sirius99 · 30/10/2020 17:01

MJMG2015 It was a waste of time, it shouldn’t have been if the whole country had been closed down properly, no people in or out, it was just contain during lockdown and has exploded when people allowed back out and at what cost to the country, it will just be the same with another lockdown. What will the government do during the lockdown to prevent the explosion in numbers again ?

justanotherneighinparadise · 30/10/2020 17:02

Hopefully they’ll do it over Christmas and we can try and crack on again in January.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 30/10/2020 17:09

I hope not. Schools should not close, it isn't fair on the kids.

Cocklepops · 30/10/2020 17:10

No idea. Probably best to wait and see what’s announced, rather than speculate.
