Why does covid hate the East of England? Wrong answers only please.

Now before I start, I’m VERY VERY GLAD that we have incredibly low numbers of coronavirus cases here in the East of England, and long may it last.

But why oh why does coronavirus not flourish here? For the purposes of avoiding doom, I’m accepting wrong answers only.

  1. Whichever gene gives you webbed feet (necessary in the soggy fens) also protects against covid. (I’m a previous owner of webbed toes and remain covid free Grin )

  2. No airborne viruses can survive here as it’s so bloody windy all the time.

Any other (probably inaccurate) reasons?

@flissity

If anyone with Covid has been on Cromer Pier this week, the virus will definitely have been blown out of them💨. Could be that. *@Damnloginpopup* you’re my grandad aren’t you 😆
I int. Yoreomanis. Yor fa'ar ha'a dickie bor!

Good old Cromer pier. The only one in Norfolk that reaches the sea I think!

I agree with PP that the 2 metre rule could ruin it all by bringing us dangerously close to each other. Grin

Alternista · 30/09/2020 22:51

This thread is life Grin

Suffolk born and bred here. I’m spending my life stuck behind tractors atm and I’ve given up trying to actually GET anywhere so I’d imagine COVID is the same and has fucked off to sit at home with a twix. Like me.

Realistically, from someone in a coastal town on the Norfolk / Suffolk border, poor transport networks that are mostly one way - nobody comes here unless it's to be outdoors for leisure and then it's mostly in summer. The attraction being space, open air and less people. It's a slower pace of life out here too, and lower income levels so we just don't go anywhere to the degree other parts of the country might generally (though I travel a lot). Its still rural, a bit backwards, ageing population and the ambitious people mostly leave. Surrounded by sea you have the cleansing wind but also a threat of infection that isn't surrounding you on all sides. And it's pockets, villages etc in general. We are still a bit arms length to others. It's the same reason that we are poor and have deprived area status on many of our towns - isolation. For the first time it's worked in our favour.

An orl them lunnerners goter sowfwold an omergen.

Surely everyone knows coronavirus is spread by 5G. We are still on 3G in East Anglia.

Alternista · 30/09/2020 23:17

3G?? I’m barely on 2F!

WhoWants2Know · 01/10/2020 03:38

In seriousness though, two schools in March (so mid-Fens) now have cases. So it is slowly creeping into the population.

It might help that towns and villages can be quite insular and not like mixing. I remember when we were house searching out here, people from each town would tell horror stories about the other nearby towns. Wisbech was full of murderers, apparently, and people drive into Chatteris and never find their way out again.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 01/10/2020 06:37

Because it got lost over Will's mother's. 🤣🤣

Actually, we have 3 confirmed cases in the village nursery school so it has found its way here.

We need East Anglia bingo.

We've got:- tractors, A14, webbed feet, Black Shuck, Will's Mother, Dutch Roundabout, fen blow, carrots

Looking for:- Lazy wind (can't be bothered to go round you so goes through you), old boy, dockey, Ditton Treacle Mines, roads with grass growing up the middle

Any others?

PigletJohn · 01/10/2020 11:37

24-hour beet harvesting

Factories that smell like Christmas puddings.

TaxTheRatFarms · 01/10/2020 17:50

I’d never heard lazy wind until now but I love it! So accurate.
Our neighbours over the road built a gorgeous big house, but are obviously Not Local because the whole bottom floor of the north east facing side is plate glass windows, facing open fenland Shock I just have images of them sitting in there on a winter night with the wind bouncing squirrels and small tractors off their windows.

same reason it hasnt made headway in the South West - poor roads with lunatic locals driving so fast it cant keep up. Normal for Norfolk or proper Bodmin might be a factor.

Chasingsquirrels · 01/10/2020 19:20

the wind bouncing squirrels and small tractors off their windows.

Oh this thread just keeps on giving 🤣
