Panic buying ....have you started?

I've had two of my friends today text me saying they have bought a frozen turkey today.
Incase people start panic buying them and it's like the toilet roll fiasco.
Please tell me this isn't a actual thing?
Are turkeys the new toilet rolls?

On a serious note, a national shortage of turkeys is unlikely to be a big problem is it? How many turkeys can the average family store?

I have got food in in case we need to self isolate - but bought over a period of months, not panic buying. I also have started buying Christmas stuff but more to spread the cost than anything else. I don’t have space to store a frozen turkey for 3 months especially not knowing how many people we will even be allowed to host!

No, otherwise it will end up like last time with empty shelves in the shops, while some people end up with loads of stuff while others have nothing. I cant see myself wiping my arse on a Turkey even though I don't eat it.

I can cope with anything CV throws at us, but I find a fight for food basics really triggering and I refuse to panic buy.

Also I'd rather have beef for Christmas dinner, so let them panic buy their tasteless turkeys. Rest of the family will be devastated though.

Nope. Haven’t got room to store one and neither have most people.

We have about 2 weeks supply of easy food like porridge, soup, beans on toast, in case we need to self isolate. Along with toiletries and cleaning products. Enough to eat, keep ourselves and the house clean without going outside, if necessary.

If there are no turkeys left at Christmas, we will eat something else. If people are panic buying frozen ones now, I suspect there will be a glut of fresh ones available before Christmas.

I went shopping today. I bought some extra tins but I usually keep a stock of them in for emergencies anyway, and had used them up by being lazy. I did buy some reduced sausages to put in the freezer, which I wouldn't normally do. I wasn't really panicking though. I don't buy turkey normally so it wouldn't occur to me to buy one now.

Other than that I bought all the usual stuff and there was plenty of stock available, nothing was missing.

I have plenty of loo roll too.

I have often tried to get a whole turkey from the supermarket outside of the xmas period and they never have any. And even if I can't get one at xmas I would just have beef or something else.

Why is there any need to panic buy?
There is not going to be a mass closure of essential retail, given that it continued all the way through the original lockdown. Supply chains have adjusted and eating out is not back to pre-March levels so there is already ongoing adjustment to people eating in the house more than previously so better resilience of food distribution.

It is sensible to have stocks in for 2-3 weeks in case of maximum quarentine times across a household, but that's hardly news.
I do appreciate that the logistics of transport and storage for keeping a running stock of domestic supplies is not an even playing field.

I must live in a parallel universe. Every supermarket here is fully stocked, no panic, no queues, no stockpiling. Pasta and bog roll (and turkeys) aplenty.

I haven't 'panic bought' which I class as buying extra, but I am doing my Christmas present shopping early because I'm concerned the shops may shut.

With the testing fiasco I think it is wise to ensure you have enough food in the house for 14 days unless you have people you would feel comfortable asking to do a big shop for you living close by. I would be happy to ask for some milk and bread etc from friends but not a weeks worth of food if we ran out after 7 days. I honestly also wouldn't trust that I would be able to get an online delivery if we were self isolating although a veg box company might deliver.
I don't think that is panic buying though but being sensible. I am just operating on a keep my cupboards and freezer fully stocked basis but not going out and buying loads of anything.

But who says there is any panic buying? Have the supermarkets said so? No sign of that round here.

There's a big range of normal food stocks in people's homes, think some people always have more in.

There's nobody panic buying in the north east either,this is just a couple of people being over dramatic I think.

Ooh I hope that everyone panic buys turkeys so I can eat something nice for Xmas dinner...DH's family always prefer turkey much to my disagreement! [misses point of thread]

I’ve bought a few extra food items for my ds who is autistic as last time the foods and brands he eats sold out and he refused to eat. But other than that no. I have no intention of panic buying and making the situation worst like things were in March.

No, we always have supplies in anyway so have kept them topped up, was really handy in the first lockdown through April as we had lots of staple food and toiletries so didn't have to rush out to the shops.

We've done the Christmas present shopping already just in case things get messy nearer Xmas, and only planning for us on Xmas day, no big bash so if we can't get a turkey we'll just have something else instead.
