That’s that then. Second lockdown now guaranteed.

Because these new measures will NOT reduce the R. Not a chance in hell.

My ‘locked down’ areas cases have continued to rise despite the ‘measures’ in place.

People will just assume things aren’t that bad, otherwise we’d be in lock down. Schools will be a major source of transmission (and save your wishful thinking, we all know what is happening there). People will just cram in to pubs earlier.

We are now guaranteed a second lockdown within the next three/four weeks.

Not necessarily

Hope not anyway

RickOShay · 22/09/2020 14:06

@MoaningMurlock
I’m sorry you battled through lockdown.
To the rest of you
You really need to take a long look in the mirror and question why you feel the need to post snidey remarks on the internet.

molifly14 · 22/09/2020 14:06

They are doing it slowly, they can't put all their eggs in one basket too quickly. They've got to slowly start the ball rolling: I think restrictions will gradually get tighter up until end of October when they will implement a circuit break.

justasking111 · 22/09/2020 14:06

I was doing a bit of research on spanish flu 1918 to 1921, Yep it lasted three years coming and going as it went. So bloody calm down we have a long way to go yet we are only six months in.

BillywilliamV · 22/09/2020 14:07

Because I am hacked off and kicking out, it gives me a brief, mild satisfaction!

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 22/09/2020 14:10

Here is what we're close enough to be guaranteed in 3-4 weeks: no deal Brexit.

RickOShay · 22/09/2020 14:11

@BillywilliamV
At somebody else’s expense?
We are ALL hacked off with it. No excuse.

Friendsoftheearth · 22/09/2020 14:11

Don't you mean 3 months batshit not 3 weeks!

The comparisons with Spanish flu are a bit silly. For one, it's a completely different virus. For another, medical knowledge has advanced massively in the century since then. They didn't even know the illness was caused by a virus for some time - microscopes powerful enough to see viruses didn't exist until the 1940s. Completely different circumstances.

@everythingthelighttouches

MoaningMurlock

I agree.

I’m disappointed because I don’t think the PM has done enough to avoid us going into a much more restrictive lockdown in a few weeks from now, which I want to avoid at all costs.

I am so worried about the costs of a lockdown to many vulnerable families.
I was not hoping for anything because I don’t want this to be happening to us.

I was expecting more.

Such as :
restriction in mixing of more than one household (with the exception of necessary childcare including grandparents)

Wearing of masks in public (even outside)

For 2 weeks.

I don't think weddings down from 30 to 15 and pubs closing at 10pm is going to cut it.

No , I don’t know the future, but that’s what I think.

@everythingthelighttouches

I agree.

I don't believe anyone is hoping for a 2nd lockdown.

We are just disagreeing about the best way to prevent it perhaps?
I think we could do with stronger measures now, such as you suggest, before it starts to get out of control again. It is not just death figures from Covid that worry me, it is hospitals filing up with Covid patients when they are normally already full over winter with Flu and other patients. The quicker we can reduce the increase in cases, the better chance we have of keeping the economy going & helping MH for all.

Friendsoftheearth · 22/09/2020 14:13

I am relieved, and if we can keep the infection rate stable, whilst keeping everything open but limited, the six months we will have to endure of this will be fine for most of us. We can manage as things stand, definitely.

We all need to do our best, as I am sure most of us, to limit what we do within reason.

I am not sure we will ever have another lockdown like the one we had in spring, I hope not anyway!

Agreed
SchadenfreudePersonified · 22/09/2020 14:16

They may work if people actually follow them as well

And there's the rub!

Getting idiots to keep to the rules.

If people didn't ignore them, or tie themselves in knots looking for loopholes (we've all seen the self-justifying threads on here) then we might not be in this position now.

However, whatever the rules are they should bloomin' well apply to EVERYONE at ALL TIMES, including that cockroach, Scummings.

RhubarbTea · 22/09/2020 14:16

@Lemons1571

I assume they’re trying to muddle through another few weeks, before announcing a 2-3 week circuit break to coincide with half term.
Absolutely this. I also firmly believe this.
SebandAlice · 22/09/2020 14:17

The death rates are still low. So I don’t think so. The country can’t afford it.

AntiHop · 22/09/2020 14:18

I don't know why people are giving you such a hard time op. At no point did it seem to me that you wanted a lockdown or were excited for one ffs!

As for your original question, I think it's too soon to say. It seems pretty sure that we'll need one, but that doesn't mean the government will do it. I think it will depend on how the vaccine development goes.

MarshaBradyo · 22/09/2020 14:19

What’s the circuit break thing again? Close businesses? It’s v expensive and may not get great long term effect

Sb2012 · 22/09/2020 14:22

I agree with OP
All these measures are more or less in place in my area. And we are still seeing some of the highest cases in England.
I don’t want another full lockdown and I don’t have an answer, but closing pubs/restaurants one hour earlier and asking ppl to work from home if they can (which they have already been doing for months in my area) isn’t going to dramatically lower the cases or prevent them from reaching tens of thousands as predicted for October. If that was the case we wouldn’t have the some of the highest positive cases in England here.
Having said all that, I also don’t know what would actually work for us.
Getting to the point where I think the vulnerable should be shielded and given funds to support those that have vulnerable family members so they can stay at home and the rest of us work with measures such as face masks social distancing etc. But I know that’s not possible or fair. I’m clueless and fed up, I truly am. Sad

AlohaMolly · 22/09/2020 14:22

@Iminaglasscaseofemotion

Perhaps the Army on the street, shooting people who leave the house? Tags on everyone which explode if they venture more than 500 feet from their houses?

There were people on here pissing their pants with the excitement at the thought of that last time. Almost demanding that should absolutely happen.

This might be beside the point, but I distinctly heard Boris say that military would be deployed ‘if necessary’ this afternoon. He slipped it in with nary a change of expression.

This is possible. But with numbers rising it would make sense to do it now.
Devlesko · 22/09/2020 14:26

It's everyone for themselves now, you just have to survive the best way for you.
If you have to/ want to work then hopefully you can wfh. If not, it's unfortunate you have to choose between possible covid and earning.
With more being made redundant and furlough ending at least there will be more parents to homeschool when schools close again, even if it's on an individual basis.

Devlesko · 22/09/2020 14:28

When did we become American? Is that Boris's doing?
Military, my foot.
We have an Army, Navy, usually called armed services.
Bloody Military. Grin

SoUtterlyGroundDown · 22/09/2020 14:29

I’m surprised their aren’t more people who noticed that he told us there will be military on the streets

Because he didn’t say that. He said ‘assisted by the military’. There are many roles the military can have, and it has since been clarified that this did not mean on the ‘front line’ just that the military may be called in to assist with some background work to free up police resource.

PimlicoJo · 22/09/2020 14:29

They need to enforce mask wearing - too many people not bothering. I was on a bus the other day and 5 out of 14 passengers weren't wearing them, and another 2 had them on their chins. It isn't fair on the people who genuinely have reasons why they can't wear masks - they should be issued with something showing they are exempt.

There's no point in talking about masks and fines if people know there are no consequences. The government lost all credibility when Johnson failed to criticise Cummings for rule breaking and made excuses for him. It was an utter farce.

minipie · 22/09/2020 14:33

I agree with you OP that cases may well continue to rise.

However that doesn’t necessarily mean second lockdown, because Covid is only one side of the equation. Jobs, mental and physical health, domestic abuse, and education are the other side of the equation - all worsened by lockdown. And IMO these are now so damaged for many that we cannot afford a second lockdown even if cases rise.

Maybe a short sharp “circuit breaker” yes but I cannot see another long national lockdown happening, the govt knows the country has been screwed too much already by the first one.
