That’s that then. Second lockdown now guaranteed.

Because these new measures will NOT reduce the R. Not a chance in hell.

My ‘locked down’ areas cases have continued to rise despite the ‘measures’ in place.

People will just assume things aren’t that bad, otherwise we’d be in lock down. Schools will be a major source of transmission (and save your wishful thinking, we all know what is happening there). People will just cram in to pubs earlier.

We are now guaranteed a second lockdown within the next three/four weeks.

@Washimal

I think the OP is getting a hard time here. She hasn't said that she wants a second lockdown at all! My interpretation of the OP was that they felt the measures announced today are a bit wishy-washy and won't do enough to prevent a second lockdown.

I definitely don't want another lockdown (my Mental Health is still shot from the first one!) but I have to admit that when I heard these 'new restrictions' I thought "is that it?" When Valance and Whitty did their briefing yesterday it was all very sombre and the message seemed to be that decisive action was needed now to prevent things from getting out of control again.

Yes the reaction has been quite odd and I’m not entirely sure some of them have even read my posts properly.

I assume it makes them feel better about themselves to rant/insult strangers on the internet for having an opinion.

I don’t WANT a second lockdown. I just do not see how it can be avoided with the completely useless measures announced today.

Who is going to do the enforcement? @Itsabeautifuldayheyhey

Police - don't have the numbers, I'm sure they want to be poking every gobshite in town with a £200 fine.

RB68 · 22/09/2020 13:41

Did you not notice his slip in of "to allow the military" with regard to helping out the police

ChromaBook · 22/09/2020 13:41

They aren't going to close schools again no matter how many people freak out about it.

Beetlejuicer · 22/09/2020 13:41

I think some people would love another lockdown. Very odd

Dozens · 22/09/2020 13:43

It’s because some people don’t have lives outside of the home anyway. A lockdown almost gives them ‘permission’ to stay in all the time.
Society expects people to leave their homes to go to work, socialise, meet family.
Those reclusive people who prefer not to do that know that people judge them for it and so now they are entirely justified to stay in.

I know because my mother was like it. Whenever we had heavy snow or was genuinely ill and couldn’t physically get out she was the happIest she’d ever been.

The expectation that she should leave the house was taken away and so the stress around it was too.

Sad really

Time2change2 · 22/09/2020 13:45

@dozens I think you are absolutely right.
I know a fair few women who say lockdown was fantastic for them. A real change to pause and reflect. Maybe this is why some people want another one? So weird

Are any of you actually reading my posts or are you just going off the title and still tittering about a frankly unoriginal ‘mystic meg’ joke?

If you all don’t want to be reading/talking about what may be wrong/right about the measures announced today...why are you even here?

OP posts:
Timeforanotherusername · 22/09/2020 13:45

So can I ask you a question since you seem like an expert?

Why is my area only slowly rising but others like yours are increasing rapidly despite the additional measures?

Juniperandrage · 22/09/2020 13:45

its really weirding me out that people seem to think if you talk about another lock down you want one and are really excited about the prospect.

I am absolutely expecting another lock down and I'm dreading it. I have CPTSD and seasonal affective disorder and a winter lockdown seems grim as hell. I'm not somehow bouncing up and down with excitement because I think it's going to happen

SoUtterlyGroundDown · 22/09/2020 13:46

But the conference today wasn’t about funding for schools, or the track and trace system. I agree they need to be addressed, but that was never going to happen in today’s briefing, which it was very clear was about restrictions, @MoaningMurlock

Timeforabiscuit · 22/09/2020 13:47

So Army +virus +unclear rules on masks+ unemployed young people + recession = ??

Go on take a wild fucking guess! If the army goes out anywhere it will be in leafy Cotswold villages marching of the colours not breaking up a birthday party in Toxteth.

Leafbeans · 22/09/2020 13:48

I reckon the pubs/restaurants is more aimed at nightclubs and bars, but they don't want to be seen to be targeting young people. And yes, closing at 10 makes a huge difference to them as most open around that time normally. It's basically closing them down without having to offer any support, although hopefully at least some can adapt to daytime food or something too.

I am keen to hear what your plan would be though? One that considers the economy, social impacts as well as covid.

gnushoes · 22/09/2020 13:48

@Kingsley08 I believe Bolton's problems stem from a tit who returned from holiday abroad, refused to quarantine then went on a pub crawl.

everythingthelighttouches · 22/09/2020 13:48

MoaningMurlock

I agree.

I’m disappointed because I don’t think the PM has done enough to avoid us going into a much more restrictive lockdown in a few weeks from now, which I want to avoid at all costs.

I am so worried about the costs of a lockdown to many vulnerable families.
I was not hoping for anything because I don’t want this to be happening to us.

I was expecting more.

Such as :
restriction in mixing of more than one household (with the exception of necessary childcare including grandparents)

Wearing of masks in public (even outside)

For 2 weeks.

I don't think weddings down from 30 to 15 and pubs closing at 10pm is going to cut it.

No , I don’t know the future, but that’s what I think.

MusicMan65 · 22/09/2020 13:49

hi all

If like me you have listened to someone who works in the NHS describe to you what a Covid fatality in hospital is like to witness then it does give you a different perspective on this.

Yes the March lockdown should have come sooner. Yes we should have not loosened things as quickly as we did recently. Yes the testing 'system' is a joke, and yes the govt have got some things very wrong indeed.

However, none of that changes the reality, which is this. Unless younger, healthier, urban people are prepared to do what is now needed then more of the elderly and unwell in urban areas will die, it really is that simple. We are where we now are because significant numbers of young, healthy urban dwellers decided to defy the previous restrictions.

Most younger people won't know they have had Covid even if they get it. At the most they'll feel ill for a few days, then self isolate (hopefully) and that'll be that, after which they'll probably become immune. Those who will suffer and die once more will be those elderly and ill people that they came into contact with during the period when they felt fine and didn't know they were carrying the virus.

So, to all those reading this aged under 40 - are you up for the challenge? It all depends on you. And remember, one day you will be old &/or ill yourself.

Stay safe everyone.

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey · 22/09/2020 13:49

Nothing they’ve announced today will do anything to reduce the R. Why would it suddenly work now when it hasn’t worked for those of us already in ‘lock down’.
Because they are now planning to strictly enforce the guidelines and have extended them.

Nobody is really locked down. I'm in an area of greater restrictions and on the council website it even tells you it is not a local lockdown. FFS.

We can all get up and go to work, or wfh if you truly do not have a workplace that has taken measures to protect you, though why all companies haven't by now is beyond me. We can go out shopping as often as we like, go out to pubs, restaurants etc to socialise. Kids can attend school, young adults can attend universities. Really, we don't have that many restrictions.

Timeforabiscuit · 22/09/2020 13:49

Personally I think it's very quaint that you all think people are so law abiding !

vanillandhoney · 22/09/2020 13:49

Blimey, @MoaningMurlock is certainly living up to their username today Hmm

Jesus fuck. What is wrong with people that they're so keen to spread fear and doom and gloom wherever they go?

Leafbeans · 22/09/2020 13:50

That's always the case, the military can be drafted in whenever to assist, it doesn't mean they're going to be at war or firing off grenades.

I understand completely, I had black thoughts (PTSD) return over lockdown that I thought I had conquered for good. I pulled through it and tried to make it good for the dc (they seemed to like it, but only while it was a novel thing) and did what I could.

But the thought of it happening again hardly makes me leap for joy. Which is exactly why the pathetic measures announced today filled me with dread.

So you're fine with a more restrictive one now, but wouldn't be with one in a few weeks time? Confused

BillywilliamV · 22/09/2020 13:51

Why in the name of Fuck would we be wearing masks outside?

BBC have just clarified this. They said the army won’t be used for any frontline enforcement, but could possibly be used to support the police in the background to free up police resource. So no tanks driving through the streets shouting for people to stay at home through a loudspeaker (sadly for some, who I suspect would love that).

We shouldn't need another lockdown.

The additional measures should be enough to slow the rate of growth of the virus.

That is of course dependent on people complying.

The weird thing (to me) is that the ones shouting against lockdown the most are the ones who are saying they will ignore the measures being put in place.

They are really not that bad. My life is pretty good at the moment. Kids are at school, we can still have fun as a family. People outside if areas with additional restrictions can still see meet others within rule of 6.

But I will play my bit to hopefully ensure we don't need to go any further (as I am sure you will too).

But my wee brain really can't comprehend the logic of many on here.
