That’s that then. Second lockdown now guaranteed.

Because these new measures will NOT reduce the R. Not a chance in hell.

My ‘locked down’ areas cases have continued to rise despite the ‘measures’ in place.

People will just assume things aren’t that bad, otherwise we’d be in lock down. Schools will be a major source of transmission (and save your wishful thinking, we all know what is happening there). People will just cram in to pubs earlier.

We are now guaranteed a second lockdown within the next three/four weeks.

Perhaps the Army on the street, shooting people who leave the house? Tags on everyone which explode if they venture more than 500 feet from their houses?

There were people on here pissing their pants with the excitement at the thought of that last time. Almost demanding that should absolutely happen.

Falcone · 22/09/2020 13:26

All the people saying that posts like this are only causing panic and hysteria, do you realise that's what everyone was saying before we went into lockdown the first time? If anyone on here wrote a post saying we were about to go into lockdown, they were told they were being ridiculous and to stop scare mongering. But who was right!? There's a good chance we could go into full lockdown again. I'm in a locked down area, and nobody seems to be taking this seriously. Most people think the rules don't apply to them.

Cornettoninja · 22/09/2020 13:26

@SockYarn

What would you suggest then, Moaning Myrtle?

A "proper lockdown" like they did in Spain with kids banned from leaving the house for 7 weeks? Perhaps the Army on the street, shooting people who leave the house? Tags on everyone which explode if they venture more than 500 feet from their houses?

Did you lose your shit there for a second? How on earth did you get from lockdown to full scale warfare against citizens so quickly?

Yeah sure I’d love that Hmm

Or maybe I just know that these ‘social measures’ have been completely ineffective in areas that are already ‘locked down’. They haven’t reduced cases at all, in fact they have continued to rise steadily.

What I would actually like is some measures that would stop this exponential growth BEFORE we end up having to go into full lockdown again.

Like funding schools so they could operate similarly to how they did in the summer, let them use other spaces/buildings and reduce class sizes.

Getting the test system up and actually bloody WORKING! I’m amazed we are even picking up on increasing positive tests as no one in our area can get hold of one. My poorly friend wanted to get a test and would have had to drive over 100 miles (shame she doesn’t have a car...) so has just gone back to work after being threatened by her boss.

You can mock me if you like, get angry and nasty. It doesn’t change the fact that I don’t need magical powers to see that these measures have not worked already, and will not work now.

See you back here in four weeks.

@UnaMujer totally agree

Timeforabiscuit · 22/09/2020 13:27

Depends if you believe 2+2=4

Cases will rise, because there is nothing to stop them - the only thing we have is social distancing, and that is breaking down.

And it's running up to flu season.

So yeah, I can well believe hospitals will be struggling this time next month.

Personally, I'm planning not to be ill or old for the next four months.

UnaMujer · 22/09/2020 13:28

@MoaningMurlock @Falcone

You can throw around predictions all you like but that still doesn’t mean you know what’s going to happen. Being right last time still doesn’t mean you will be right this time.

Even our medical experts don’t now if the new measures will be effective or not and they know a hell of a lot more than some random scaremonger on the internet.

If you want to live in constant fear then crack on but stop trying to drag everyone else down with you.

86jabberwocky · 22/09/2020 13:28

@REDLIPSTICKANDNAILS I really want a campaign to start so that tabloids like the Daily Mail could be investigated over this. They are now sharing images of queues and empty shelves forcing people to panic buy.

SoUtterlyGroundDown · 22/09/2020 13:29

What restrictions were you hoping for OP?

Coriandersucks · 22/09/2020 13:30

Everyone always knows better don’t they - maybe become an mp or something and put your money where your mouth is.

Quaagars · 22/09/2020 13:30

Can you do me the winning lottery numbers for next Saturday please with your psychic powers?

And me please! Smile

Seriously, what is the point in these doom and gloom threads?
They just cause anxiety and scare mongering. You say it like it's fact "guaranteed!" when it's not at all.
There's been NO mention of a second lockdown, never mind saying it's "guaranteed" - we have these measures in place, and if we stick to them hopefully there's no need for stricter measures later.

Elephantday82 · 22/09/2020 13:30

Not a chance of a full lockdown IMO. They did it in Belgium. The R rate dropped right down to under one and started to rise again as soon as they ended.

Doingitaloneandproud · 22/09/2020 13:31

Did lockdown not affect your life last time? Because that's the only reason I can genuinely imagine why people get excited at the thought of it.
The economy tanked, millions lost their jobs, mental health did a sharp nosedive. There are 1081 people in hospital with Covid currently, 0.0015% of the population, according to gov.uk data yesterday. So no I don't want a second lockdown because I'm more worried about people's lives lost through mental health decline and missed cancer diagnosis's. If it can be avoided then all for it

Lemons1571 · 22/09/2020 13:31

I assume they’re trying to muddle through another few weeks, before announcing a 2-3 week circuit break to coincide with half term.

Washimal · 22/09/2020 13:31

I think the OP is getting a hard time here. She hasn't said that she wants a second lockdown at all! My interpretation of the OP was that they felt the measures announced today are a bit wishy-washy and won't do enough to prevent a second lockdown.

I definitely don't want another lockdown (my Mental Health is still shot from the first one!) but I have to admit that when I heard these 'new restrictions' I thought "is that it?" When Valance and Whitty did their briefing yesterday it was all very sombre and the message seemed to be that decisive action was needed now to prevent things from getting out of control again.

I agree. I don't understand why people keep saying we will go into lockdown. Bans on socialising maybe. I think workplaces and schools will stay open.
Coriandersucks · 22/09/2020 13:33

See you back here in four weeks.

I can almost hear you clapping your hands and bouncing up and down with excitement at the prospect of coming back and saying how right you were.

You might well be right, but you might also be wrong. Have a bit of humility.

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey · 22/09/2020 13:34

"@MoaningMurlock*
Well, at least your username shows self-awareness.

I think that the measures being implemented in England (devolved nations to make their own, similar, announcements) and enforcing them will make a difference.

Staff and customers in retail wearing masks,
Users of taxis to wear masks,
Table service only in pubs, bars restaurants (from Thursday 24th September).
Maximum 15 for weddings (from Monday 28th September).
Rule of 6 to apply for all indoor team sports.
No opening up sports stadiums from October as planned.

Enforcement
Penalties of up to £10k being extended beyond failure to self-isolate.
Doubling of penalty for not wearing a mask to £200 for a first offence.
Businesses face closure for non-compliance.
Greater police presence on the streets.
Will call on military if necessary to enforce measures.
Will take more measures, if necessary, if they can't get the R rate below 1.

Travelling outside your area in local lockdown areas to be determined by the local authorities in those areas.

Sir Keir Starmer stated he supports the measures announced today as he supported the measures In the first wave and in the local lockdowns.

MoaningMurlock · 22/09/2020 13:35

@SoUtterlyGroundDown

What restrictions were you hoping for OP?
I was actually hoping more for what I put in the post above.

Extra funding to make schools safer, like they were in the summer.

Schools weren’t even mentioned.

A test and trace system that actually has a use, easily accessible tests to everyone, not just those lucky few who happen to live near a centre (or even get an appointment ). Results within 24 hours. Germany gave been a fantastic example of how this worked to reduce spread drastically ally without having to lock down.

Again we just got empty platitudes of how it’s all going swimmingly and they’ll be certain to make EVEN note tests happen. Nothing concrete at all.

Nothing they’ve announced today will do anything to reduce the R. Why would it suddenly work now when it hasn’t worked for those of us already in ‘lock down’.

What are Friday's lottery numbers, Mystic Meg?
I’m holding you personally responsible for the hot chocolate I’ve just shot out my nose and all over my desk 😂
Browneyesbigbum · 22/09/2020 13:36

I'm glad @MoaningMurlock people like you didn't get more. Seriously have some perspective, people are not dying in their thousands but people are losing their jobs, committing suicide, having mental health issues, domestic violence is up, businesses are folding.

Thankfully we didn't get the shut everything approach

Orangeblossom7777 · 22/09/2020 13:37

The lockdown itself didn't work in those areas either OP...so why do you think it will work this time? Confused

MakingASilkPurse · 22/09/2020 13:37

MoaningMurlock How schools operated in the summer was a sticking plaster at best, in no way a suitable replacement for children being in school. We need to learn a sense of proportionality about the levels of risk posed by the virus and react APPROPRIATELY.

REDLIPSTICKANDNAILS · 22/09/2020 13:37

'See you back here in four weeks' - listen to yourself OP. I'm sure you'll be marking the days off on your Covid Calendar when you can post back on here in 4 weeks with a smug post. How will you ever cope if it doesn't go as you planned?

Browneyesbigbum · 22/09/2020 13:38

@Itsabeautifuldayheyhey

Indeed. What you say is enough. The OP and similar moaning types would have us locked away forever even though numbers are very low in most of the country
