Can someone give any info on what was said today? I don't know what to believe with media. I missed it

What I remember:

It's deadlier than the flu, so stop comparing them

8% immunity in the UK

Hospitalisations are rising, but we can expect that we won't experience the death rates of the first peak

smellycats · 21/09/2020 11:37

They made efforts to dispel a lot of myths, I thought. And much emphasis on 'collectively' dealing with it. Concerns too that COVID is likely to do well in winter as flu does.

Yetiyoga · 21/09/2020 11:37

Thank you both.

Will check out that link.

In work so couldn't watch

We're fucked, lads. Luckily it's up to Boris Johnson and Matt Hancock to unfuck us.

treebarking · 21/09/2020 11:39

Deaths could get to 200 per day

Hospitals will likely be overwhelmed (deaths actually make hospitals less busy, sick people not so much!) - if nothing changes from now

Don't do the MN classic of 'I'll take my own risks / risk ax etc'

Cases around 50k by oct / nov I think - didn't catch that bit.

cheninblanc · 21/09/2020 11:40

I got the points but it all ended a bit abruptly. Its growing, we have to act fast but nothing to tell us how other than hands space face. I am hoping they'll be a government follow-up!

Vikingess · 21/09/2020 11:41

In essence, rates and therefore potential deaths are increasing. Need to reduce social contacts and although that might be painful we should act like responsible grown ups not whinging entitled shits.

MissPoldark · 21/09/2020 11:42

And from Whitty, which is what so many people constantly fail to realise/understand:

“You cannot in an epidemic just take your own risk, unfortunately you’re taking a risk on behalf of everybody else. It’s important that we see this as something that we have to do collectively”

Yes I'm hoping there will be a follow up too to outline any new additional measures shortly.

However, I didn't take another hard lockdown from that briefing personally. I think it was made quite clear that they are also aware of what impact going too far could have on the economy and finding a balance between the two. I'm glad that was acknowledged at least.

Badbanana · 21/09/2020 11:43

The virus hasn’t morphed into a less deadly version.

Keep doing the things you hopefully already are (washing hands, wear masks, social distancing).

The virus spreads in poorly ventilated and crowded indoor areas, except for schools which didn’t get a mention and are therefore immune.

Just on BBC news, there are more women in the 20-40 age range being admitted into hospital than others.

Possible due to more caring/service jobs.

No one mentioned that schools have been back for a while and who is a middle aged mum more likely to get it from, a socially distanced stranger in a mask or a hugged/kissed symptomless child?

They still say that immunity based on antibody studies and ignore that may be T cell immunity as well, think they are not very up to date

I'm particularly glad that he made the point around people making their own risk assessments, and how this puts others at risk. Sadly though, I don't think this will change some people's behaviours.

Sb2012 · 21/09/2020 11:47

@diggadoo

-stop fucking saying it's like flu, it's worse.
  • 8% of the U.K. have immunity but it fades
-you can catch this more than once
  • cases are rising, it's got fuck all to do with more tests so stop saying that as well.
-we'll avoid saying schools opening have contributed to the rising cases, but if you're not dense you'll work this out -people are going to die, we can't help that. -we're fluffing you for a big fat bumming from Boris Johnson when he announces six months of restrictions later this week. -
Yeah basically this. 🤣

I am a rule follower myself, but not wanting to be banned from seeing your mother isn’t being a “whinging, entitled shit”.

Minimising the draconian impact of the restrictions is not helpful. They may be necessary, but doesn’t change the fact they’re awful, and calling people upset about it “entitled shits” is out of order.

I think they’re trying very hard to drive home a message that there is very little immunity in order to try to increase compliance.

“The virus spreads in poorly ventilated and crowded indoor areas”.

Like hospitals.

Valance did mutter something about other types of immunity. It would be great to see another bigger study on the level of t-cell immunity following the Karolinska Institute one.

bluebeck · 21/09/2020 11:51

The SAGE scientists the BBC interviewed afterwards were very interesting. From them I also got that:

No more local lockdowns/restrictions
Households will most likely be banned from mixing
Limits on hospitality (hopefully not just a stupid 10pm curfew)
By mid October we will all be barricading ourselves into our homes anyway because the virus will be rampant.
Women 20 - 40 are increasingly being hospitalised with Covid, probably because they work in health, social care and Education.

No mention of the Test and Trace - I guess it's not even worth talking about any more, it's that ineffective.

AriettyHomily · 21/09/2020 11:52

You are all doomed if you don't comply with whatever comes out tomorrow.
