Can someone give any info on what was said today? I don't know what to believe with media. I missed it

@Redolent but its running rampant in lots of countries some who had stricter measures and many who had got numbers down from strict lockdowns

tappitytaptap · 21/09/2020 16:02

I am not sure why I am being singled out as having an odd viewpoint. I have a fairly reasonable social circle with differing circumstances. Lots of them have to mix households for childcare. It is exceedingly normal amongst my friends and colleagues to have a mix of paid and family childcare. Perhaps I am in an odd demographic.
@Daisy03 parents in their 60s with no underlying conditions. DF is a retired medical professional. They just wouldn’t go without seeing my kids. Again not an uncommon viewpoint amongst people I know, though perhaps so on mumsnet - different demographic?!

Legoandloldolls · 21/09/2020 16:07

@Muchtoomuchtodo

Are they saying that those with antibodies have definite immunity (the 8%)?
Nope. The said they dont know and looks like it could fade over time if you do
alreadytaken · 21/09/2020 16:13

diggadoo 's otherwise excellent summary missed out on one thing - if you do not start complying there may be no non-Covid healthcare. Dont think you will be able to get an ambulance for a heart attack or a place in ICY if your car crashes - because the NHS may already be full of Covid patients.

If you want access to health care, if you want the NHS to be able to do anything that makes your life better you need to do everything you humanely can not to spread the virus.

@GerardWay123

George Orwell. Nineteen Eighty-Four. We have all walked into a totalitarian state without even realising it.

This makes me angry. As some who literally grew up in a totalitarian state, just shut the fuck up. To compare wearing a mask and a handful of temporary restrictions to police brutality, state sanctioned murders etc is insulting in the extreme. That kind of idiocy can only come from a self-entitled member of the 'first world'.

How many people piping up with 1984 gave actually read it?
Own an Alexa or similar? Now that’s Orwellian.

CrunchyNutNC · 21/09/2020 16:36
@CrunchyNutNC but for how long can we do that , its worldwide we can't all stay in as certain things have to run regardless
If we stay in for 6 months then as we start to get back to normal the virus just starts again
Nz had no cases for ages yet now having a couple here and there and they are'nt open for travel as such unless you can quarantine
If a vaccine was guaranteed in 6 months it would help , but closing down is really about slowing the virus as it can't be eradicated easily
We need to do it for as long as necessary because it is not a binary choice of normality v restriction, or, lockdown v restriction. People only go out spending money if they feel safe, and as cases increase and the chances that they'll know someone similar to them who had it and really was very ill, people will find the appeal to eat out or shop declines.

we can't all stay in as certain things need to function regardless yes but take all the vulnerable nurses, doctors, paramedics, carers, teachers, and refuse collectors out of the equation and we will struggle to function. The vulnerable aren't just the elderly and infirm.

We need to minimise the transmission as far as possible over the winter or it'll be a shit show. We are between the classic rock and hard place.

Nevermind what Orwell would have made of Facebook!

I don’t think you are being singled out - perhaps just exposed as someone who cares little about people other than yourself. I am sure you will continue to follow your own conscience, but you might struggle to get validation from those who have a more considered and compassionate view.

MotherOfDragonite · 21/09/2020 17:12

We can all adjust our lives to some extent to minimise our risk (and therefore our risk to others).

I now work entirely from home, but I realise I am massively privileged to be able to make that change and many don't have the choice. But I hope by making the change I may be reducing my risk to other people too.

I have stopped using public transport and we now commute by bike as a family. I have massively reduced my usual activities and now that the kids have returned to school/nursery we have stopped seeing friends and relatives who are vulnerable because of age or other medical conditions. Including my mum.

But literally everyone can do something, even if it's a small change. Your change could just be wearing a mask, avoiding crowded indoor places in favour of outdoor routes or venues if you have a choice, and being mindful to keep a 2 metre distance from others. You could minimise your use of public transport for optional journeys, or take vitamin D and vitamin C to boost your levels as they have been shown to have a protective effect. If you are overweight (as I am) you could reduce your calorie intake with the aim of losing a bit of weight, which again improves your chances with Covid. You can be good about washing hands more regularly.

I feel like it is challenging but at the same time we all have actions in our control that we can take to improve our risk levels!

MotherOfDragonite · 21/09/2020 17:14

Ideally I don't think anyone should be eating/drinking in at restaurants or pubs -- that's optional rather than essential and extra risky as it's indoors without masks and with larger numbers of people.

Support your local businesses by all means, but do it by ordering takeaway or buying their products or gift vouchers for future use.

The trouble was shutting stuff down caused so many other unnecessary deaths. I know 2 people who died in lockdown 1 from a heart attack, I suspect he didn't want to make a fuss so didn't ring an ambulance and 1 due to mental health issues that became unbearable when all their help disappeared overnight.

Please let's not try to just scare everyone into compliance again as it had some horrible unintended consequences.

tappitytaptap · 21/09/2020 17:25

I will just leave this here....www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-54240681
@Vikingess of course I care about other people, but my own children having a roof over their heads is obviously my number one priority. Is it not for most parents? Have I wrongly assumed this is a parenting site?!

TheBeatGoesOn · 21/09/2020 17:29

If we are told we cannot mix households, I can guarantee most will ignore it.
My NDN had their grandkids over throughout most of lockdown and had a gathering of about 8 people before we were allowed to meet with others outside of the home. There will always be people who think they are too special to follow the rules everyone else is following.

Bunnyfuller · 22/09/2020 18:18
 1. We have to be more careful.
 2. But not until Thursday
 3. Pubs and restaurants will close at 10pm because the bad viruses aren’t around in those areas until after 10
 4. Wear masks as you walk past a stranger in 3 seconds in a shop.
 5. But don’t wear masks in offices because the virus spreads in rooms in a house not rooms where you sit with several people not from your own ‘bubble’
 6. Schools will stay open with restrictions even though half the little twats will completely disregard the restrictions the second they’re out of the school gate.
 7. You mustn’t meet in groups of any more than 6. Unless you’re in an office or kids at school.
 8. Fines will operate under a zero tolerance policy. As we got rid of 20000 police officers because we don’t need them, we might send some soldiers out to help them. The soldiers can’t issue the fines or arrest anyone but they look scary
 9. The police (and soldiers) will know just by looking at someone whether they’ve got Covid and if they’re meant to be self isolating.
10. Boris promises 79 gazillion tests every 5 minutes by teatime on Friday, so that will be fine.

I think that sums it up.

Witchend · 22/09/2020 18:39

@Bunnyfuller

Grin Good summing up!
ladyflushing · 22/09/2020 18:50

Um not sure as was driving to Kenilworth Castle to check my eyesight before driving back down south, and my gut instinct said it was ok to what I felt was right at the time.

EllenBest · 22/09/2020 19:03

It is out there waiting to do the job that viruses do ... get you. It has not gone it is not a second wave. It has been there all the time, wearing masks distancing and cleaning gave it nowhere to go, until, selfish people stopped. They visited they hugged, they did what they wanted and Up it rose; like a flame to a petticoat.
Do as you are told and we will buy time to flatten the curve, save lives and get a vaccine. It is not rocket science. Lets pull together and do it responsibly. We are not an ignorant backward nation. We are civilized human beings, educated, and proud. Let's just do it. Thank you.

Den1se · 22/09/2020 20:51

Diggadoo, try another adjective other than effing.

Bluebell246 · 22/09/2020 23:41

To the person who said everyone needs to comply or there wont be health care for other conditions, that's already happening. My very vulnerable 82 year old mum has been waiting over 7 months for a clinic appointment. Trying to get her a GP appointment is a nightmare. And the waiting time for mental health provision is appalling. So your threat is already a reality for many people. Covid isnt the only thing that kills.

HeIenaDove · 22/09/2020 23:45

My 84 year old mum needed a blood test in March. She didnt get it till August.

differentialdiagnosis · 23/09/2020 00:20

Then I am simply saying that I (and several other families I know) will not comply. However much people on mumsnet froth about it. In the real world, I don’t know people who are willing to sacrifice their earning potential for this, not one.

No frothing. Just nausea.

Celestine70 · 23/09/2020 00:30

I don't listen anymore. I just live in my own fairy land.

ParlezVousWronglais · 23/09/2020 00:37

Go to work don’t go to work work from home if you can but go to work if you really want to.
