A second lockdown - is it coming?

I very, very naively posted on here back in March saying a lockdown wasn't happening blah, blah...

Oh how wrong I was. Mumsnet was all over it.

What's your thoughts this time future predictors?

YABU - No Second Lockdown
YANBU - SECOND lockdown is aaaa' coming

Ya u.

TheLastStarfighter · 17/09/2020 10:56

Without any comment on whether or not I would support one, because I'll get jumped on either way...

I don't think there will be another national lockdown. I do think we could end up with substantial areas of the country under local restrictions (which might of course be confusing for people to know what rules apply where).

KitKatastrophe · 17/09/2020 10:57

No
The economy would crash (even more)
We couldnt support people with furlough so it would cause mass unemployment and civil unrest
A much larger proportion of people would not comply. Including me.

JayDot500 · 17/09/2020 10:59

We'll have local lockdowns, nationwide... Except the areas that barely have enough people to summon a tesco express.

surroundedbyostriches · 17/09/2020 11:03

yes, I think one is coming.

No, I don't think so. I think there will be other measures such as no visiting other people's homes, curfews on businesses being open late at night and all the other things coming into play in areas with high cases. But not a big lockdown, people will still be expected to go to work in offices and schools will be expected to keep going if they can.

pontypridd · 17/09/2020 11:07

I don’t think there is meant to be one coming. Gov will do anything to avoid a National lockdown.

But what happens if/when rates get out of control as do death rates and hospital admissions?

Do they just let it run wild through the population?

Because COVID is about to get out of control here. Nothing is keeping it at bay anymore.

MGMidget · 17/09/2020 11:08

I think there will be lockdown under a different guise. This time it will be more localised with no furlough, emphasis put on local businesses/schools and local authorities to impose restrictions so we'll get a bit of a chaotic mess. The economy will still suffer but try to muddle along with great uncertainty. Businesses won't know from one week to the next which employees they can rely on being in the office/in the work location or who will be at home. Lack of testing will make things worse (again) just like the first time around when there was no testing until the virus was already widespread in some areas so there was no easy way to control it. Parents will be doing a lot of home schooling. Maybe I am too pesimistic, we'll see in a few months!

cataline · 17/09/2020 11:10

The North East is getting one tomorrow apparently.

AriettyHomily · 17/09/2020 11:10

I sense nationwide, local lockdowns.

I feel a sense of doom at what is coming and I'm pretty rational.

Presumably it's been colder further north and schools have been back longer in Scotland. So we are on a trajectory to a fucking mess.

YukoandHiro · 17/09/2020 11:10

Just this morning the gov's medical advisors told the cabinet that they want a two week national lockdown to halt the spread. (heard this on that today programme)

So yes, it's coming.

I'm due a bloody baby in 3 weeks. Really hoped this would all be taking a backseat by now!

mooshie06 · 17/09/2020 11:12

No, I think another lockdown will bring the country to its knees. I do think there will be a lot of local lockdowns, potentially no socialising, curfews and maybe even the rota of year groups in school versus remote learning. I really hope I’m wrong.

BrokenBrit · 17/09/2020 11:12

I doubt even the government know so no one here will be able to do anything other than guess.

I mean it would be a disaster for the economy but if the virus looks like it’s running out of control or hospitals are becoming overwhelmed then it would have to be a possibility I would think. Who knows.

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 17/09/2020 11:12

I don't think there'll be a national full on lockdown but I think there'll be ongoing local lockdowns with much tighter restrictions.

EssentialHummus · 17/09/2020 11:13

We'll have local lockdowns, nationwide...

Yup. Or the lack of tests will effectively lead to a lockdown since we’re all at home seeing out 14 days over and over.

x2boys · 17/09/2020 11:13

Well cases are going up ,more people are being admitted to hospital ,my son is already self isolating as another child in his bubble tested positive so who knows?

Scbchl · 17/09/2020 11:13

No I dont think so. The economy cant cope with another. Where and when would it end. This isnt going to go anywhere we need to learn to live with it with as little impact as possible to the economy and the only way we can do that is local lockdowns. Scotland had something like 3 deaths in 7 weeks our hospitals arent ooverwhelmed. There is no justifying a complete lockdown here.

TinyMetalBirds · 17/09/2020 11:14

No. Not a national one with schools closed and most shops etc, and only able to go out for one exercise a day. I honestly do not think there would be the compliance necessary.
On the other hand I didn't think there would be the first one until a few days before it happened so what do I know.

TokyoSushi · 17/09/2020 11:16

No, I don't think we'll have the big 'You must stay at home' again. I do think however we'll have more and more local lockdowns of varying degrees until most of the country is under some sort of restriction.

Matt Hancock speaking in the Commons at 11:30am might give us a bit more of an idea.

x2boys · 17/09/2020 11:17

I'm in Bolton ,@Scbchl a few weeks ago we were nearly out of local restrictions because we had low rates of infection, now we have the highest rates of infection in the country and hospital admission,s are going up.

BertiesLanding · 17/09/2020 11:20

I think there will be, due to the testing fiasco.

PicsInRed · 17/09/2020 11:21

Will the govt try it? Probably. Will the masses comply? Unlikely. Most people have had enough and the goodwill is no longer there.

Vivana · 17/09/2020 11:22

If there is another lock down I'll get signed off work with anxiety working through the last one in a supermarket was not nice at all

x2boys · 17/09/2020 11:22

The public will have no choice to comply though if everything is shut and schools are shut .
