A second lockdown - is it coming?

I very, very naively posted on here back in March saying a lockdown wasn't happening blah, blah...

Oh how wrong I was. Mumsnet was all over it.

What's your thoughts this time future predictors?

YABU - No Second Lockdown
YANBU - SECOND lockdown is aaaa' coming

Don't be silly OP, of course there's not going to be a second national lockdown (the government have said so!) we can have everyone on local restrictions instead.

All the schools will be open too except the ones that have to shut.

pontypridd · 17/09/2020 12:09

I think there is likely to be another lockdown - shorter this time ...

I think Covid will run wild without one - but also don't see the point, because as soon as everything unlocks it runs wild again anyway (unless gov could get is bloody act together and test and trace properly etc).

Its the test and trace that needs to happen - not another lockdown.

Pegase · 17/09/2020 12:10

The schools situation is really bad already. So although I don't expect a national mandated lockdown due to the economy, we may end up in a similar situation to before where schools can't stay open as not enough staff. Well they could stay open as childcare potentially but you can't even merge classes and fill a hall with children so...

When I say it's bad in schools I mean positive cases, not just people self-isolating due to a cold.

PicsInRed · 17/09/2020 12:16

@Mamawell

Out of interest? Does anyone think we should just not bother with isolating or lockdowns, unless you have actually full blown Coronovirus symptoms?

Let it run its course and see what happens?

Should we leave it up to the individual to stay home if they want to avoid it?

(Not my thoughts - just asking for opinions)

Do you work for political canvassers? Wink

I'm absolutely sure that the govt is quietly trying to figure out what people will put up with.

In answer to the overall question, it's a no from me, they can shut everything if they like, but I won't be staying home and doing the old "one short exercise a day" and "shopping only for essentials as infrequently as possible". Did all that once, to the letter, absolutely will not do it ever again, period.

dreamingbohemian · 17/09/2020 12:20

They will introduce a whole raft of new restrictions that add up to something near a national lockdown, without having to actually call it a national lockdown.

There are loads of things they could do that would not impact most people very much -- curfews on pubs, cancelling big events.

If we accept some modest limits on social life it may let us keep essential daily activities open, especially schools.

Worriedmum999 · 17/09/2020 12:21

Matt Hancock has just been asked this specific question in the commons and he did not address it AT ALL even with other MPs shouting ‘what about lockdown’ at him. I think that sort of proves that it’s pretty likely to happen.

thingsarelookingup · 17/09/2020 12:27

What Melbourne found was that local lockdown within a city didn't work but statewide restrictions have certainly worked. We are still under lockdown because the government are going for extreme suppression because our borders are closed so if it works we can open properly and stay open.

PopsicleHustler · 17/09/2020 12:29

@YukoandHiro wow, I really hope it works well for you. I'm expecting my number 5 and just hoping for the best really. God willing. The hospital have said that husband can be there for the birth and the labour but cannot be in the postnatal ward. It's really difficult. But it's justthe way it is at the moment.

I really wish you the absolute best for your induction

movingonup20 · 17/09/2020 12:31

Local only, we can't afford to furlough again and it was abused

BadBanana · 17/09/2020 12:33

I thought the exact thing.

Yesterday I told my beat friend not to worry as I was 100% sure there wouldn’t be a second lockdown.

How ever after watching that...it’s pretty obvious it is on its way.

RollingWithMyGnomie · 17/09/2020 12:36

As others said I can’t see there is much point in a second lockdown - and I say this as someone who thought the first should have happened sooner.

If we don’t have testing and tracing in place and pick up local infections in the community it will surely be meaningless.

We would lock down bugger things up even more than before and be back to square one as soon as we all get out again. Testing and isolating cases is the cornerstone of getting some sort of grip on this. Not lockdowns

annabel85 · 17/09/2020 12:52

A lockdown but not a lockdown.

The north east is the guinea pig. No mixing with other households, curfews on pubs and restaurants.

The difference from March is shops will stay open, they want people in offices and pubs will be open but with limited hours.

Basically, go outside but only if it's economically productive to do so (i.e. shop, work)

x2boys · 17/09/2020 12:58

Greater Manchester have had those restrictions for weeks now ,and here in Bolton we can only get takeaway food etc we are not allowed to mix with an house hold,s inside or out ,so I'm not sure the North East is a guinea pig?

PhilCornwall1 · 17/09/2020 12:59

All those say "absolutely there will be", how do you know this for sure?

tenredthings · 17/09/2020 13:10

No they care more about the economy. On the other hand expect lots of rules which will prohibit gatherings of people and enhance the power to arrest anyone protesting this appalling Government or looming NoDeal Brexit shitshow !

BadBanana · 17/09/2020 13:12

I now wouldn’t be adverse to a small lockdown while the testing and track and trace systems were massively improved ready to handle a large number on coming out of lockdown.

SpringSunshineandTulips · 17/09/2020 13:14

I think they will start closing things down slowly. So things like no hair and beauty appointments, then no pubs, curfews, no households mixing etc etc. Think schools will be last to close as they’ve said that previously. It’s all shit and I don’t think many of us will get through this with our mental health intact.

Boredsilly · 17/09/2020 13:23

No I don't think that the economy could survive it to many people would loose there jobs, places would close down etc just the local lock down and restrictions

cologne4711 · 17/09/2020 13:27

I don't think there will be a formal lockdown like before because we can't afford it, and we need eg to keep schools open this time around, but I can see there being more restrictions like a curfew or making pubs close early.

However, I thought that schools (in England) would be back at May half term, so what do I know. I am still a bit Shock that Y10 and 12 weren't.

loulouljh · 17/09/2020 13:42

I really dont think there will be. Compliance levels will be very low and the government knows that. Plus the economy will be ruined forever. There may well be more local ones plus more tinkering with silly rules (which people will also ignore). What a shambles.

Jaxhog · 17/09/2020 13:55

Not if we follow the rules, no. So it's really up to us.

viccat · 17/09/2020 14:02

I predicted the first one was coming when everyone still said "no way". This time though I think it's less likely to come but there may be tighter regulations in general locally/nationally on and off throughout the coming months.

I really doubt they'll do a complete lockdown the way we had though and advice people to stay at home like that. The economy is already struggling and compliance with a second lockdown would be much lower too after everything that's gone on since.

PollyPelargonium52 · 17/09/2020 14:21

Hope they just implement 10pm curfew and NO mixing households visiting whatsoever in each others homes. If people stuck at that plus encourage to work at home again.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 17/09/2020 14:23

They can't lock down again without paying people's wages for them to stay home. I doubt they want to do that so I doubt there will be a national lockdown.

chestergirl39 · 17/09/2020 14:26

I’ve no idea, but have started to notice that some shops are getting empty shelves again, is that a sign?? Time to stock up on loo rolls! 😜
