A second lockdown - is it coming?

Mamawell · 17/09/2020 10:53

I very, very naively posted on here back in March saying a lockdown wasn't happening blah, blah...

Oh how wrong I was. Mumsnet was all over it.

What's your thoughts this time future predictors?

YABU - No Second Lockdown
YANBU - SECOND lockdown is aaaa' coming

For those saying lots of local lockdowns etc I completely agree they will try this. But I am in an area of ‘lockdown’ and it’s nothing like lockdown!
Kids in school
Baby groups on
Can go out as a household
Parks open
Days out possible
Can go to the office
Etc etc
It’s great I’m so much happier and it’s much more sustainable than full lockdown but it’s nothing like back in March/April. If this works and keeps numbers at a manageable level it’s fine. I miss socialising with other people and family but it’s liveable.
@PhilCornwall1 Thanks. It is always good to hear about others who are on the same hymn sheet.

It doesn't seem all that long ago that some on here might well have accused us of being murderers.
It will probably still happen.

MiddlesexGirl · 17/09/2020 16:52

If people refuse to follow the current restrictions then government will have no choice but to tighten them more, maybe to lockdown. Which would be catastrophic for children and employment.

toolatetooearly · 17/09/2020 16:52

No national lockdown.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 17/09/2020 16:53

Well if Boris denies it, we can probably predict it will happen

Topseyt · 17/09/2020 16:55

@PhilCornwall1

I don't doubt that it will probably happen again.

The Covid/Lockdown/Mask police haven't gone away. Just either quietened down a bit to await their next big project for the greater good of mankind.

They are probably refining their applications for the posts of Covid Marshalls ready for Boris's hand picked bunch of arses to peruse.

@Redcups64

I knew the first was coming, knew kids would be off until September even though no one believed me.

Don’t think there would be a second on the basis the country can’t afford it. Local lockdowns will happen though, but not national I think.

But they were not all off until September mine went back in June

Agree a second one won't happen though all Scaremongering we have hardly any cases where I am
Ellsbells12 · 17/09/2020 17:10

@PicsInRed I won't either my mental health declining bad even on anti depressants so no way

ThankyouPeter · 17/09/2020 17:11

@MagicalThinking

Don't be silly OP, of course there's not going to be a second national lockdown (the government have said so!) we can have everyone on local restrictions instead.

All the schools will be open too except the ones that have to shut.

Haha absolutely spot on! We will be able to mingle with as many households as we like as long as they live at the same address as us too Wink
Stinkyguineapig · 17/09/2020 17:11

Believe it or not, they are many people's family businesses and livelihoods, making them fairly significant contributors to the economy, both local and national.

It's very easy for people to say "just" close pubs, restaurants, gyms, no large events etc...which is fine for the consumer....not so great if theres nothing in place for the thousands of people out of work by "just" taking those measures.
I dont know what the answers are and I can see the benefit and cost to lockdowns but it's not as easy as "just close (insert major source of jobs)"

RhubarbTea · 17/09/2020 17:29

@annabel85

A lockdown but not a lockdown.

The north east is the guinea pig. No mixing with other households, curfews on pubs and restaurants.

The difference from March is shops will stay open, they want people in offices and pubs will be open but with limited hours.

Basically, go outside but only if it's economically productive to do so (i.e. shop, work)

This. Exactly this will happen - in my opinion. See your friends safely outside in a distanced way in groups if 6 or less while you can!
4cats2kids · 17/09/2020 18:02

Will someone post the large schlong linkGrin

BillywilliamV · 17/09/2020 18:06

There are 6 cases per 100, 000 round here at the moment, I will not be going into lockdown!

StealthPolarBear · 17/09/2020 18:35

In what way is the North East a Guinea pig? How is our lockdown different from those recently in the North West and west Midlands?

HighlandThing · 17/09/2020 18:40

I think they'll be a lockdown by any other name - so that Boris can claim it isn't really a lockdown. A GP today said in his view we should be doing things now to prepare for lockdown eg haircuts etc. There might be restrictions on staying on local area, driving distances, visiting others homes, non-essential journeys etc. Staying local basically.

StealthPolarBear · 17/09/2020 18:41

I can't see the voting buttons

PicsInRed · 17/09/2020 18:49
@PicsInRed

For what reasons would you not do it?

What sort of things would you do that went against the restrictions?

Just curious...
I don't publish manifestos on mumsnet. Grin

islockdownoveryet · 17/09/2020 18:52

Not a National , localised yes .
My reasons last time the government ordered non essential places to close and paid furloughed for people.
More than expected applied for furloughed and it cost far far too much .
I think the plan was to shut for a month or so and hope that the worse was gone then track and trace will be running by summer and a vaccine by later this year .
Now it's no better we may have not bothered and the government will not pay for furloughed again .
It'll be take away only / curfew no mixing household etc . All very miserable but we will go to work / school and carry on .
A lockdown will result in so many companies going bust poverty etc . We won't have a future to look forward to when this is all over . I think we can all agree now this isn't going to go away next month or by Christmas this is the long haul.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 17/09/2020 21:12

They will do everything short of closing schools and workplaces (with the exception of hospitality type workplaces where they may do industry specific furlough)
They have clearly seen that the economic damage from full lockdown isnt worth it, so they will do as much social lockdowning as they can.
Trouble is, it's schools/offices/public transport where it will spread so I don't think that will effectively contain it.

We'll limp on through the winter with hopes of a vaccine for spring. As I don't think we're ever going to get out of this until a vaccine is distributed.

midgebabe · 17/09/2020 21:16

How come it costs too much for the uk to support people through lockdown , whilst Germany and France somehow can afford to pay for extended furlough schemes?

VickySunshine · 17/09/2020 21:24

Probably not a nation wide lockdown but entire regional areas will be. At the moment infections are climbing fast. Hospital admissions are rising and so are deaths. But of course online Daily Mail contributors think Covid 19 doesn’t exist and it’s all a Government conspiracy. Seriously, that’s the level of stupidity out there.

Stinkyguineapig · 17/09/2020 22:02

I cant understand the conspiracy theory people (my Dsis told me of one of her friends who was dismissing covid - and shes a nurse!Confused)

A conspiracy that the whole world is in on
For what purpose...?
What the hell is anyone trying to gain from it...?

Ormally · 17/09/2020 23:50

No...surely it won't be able to count as a "national" lockdown as North Devon, Alderney, parts of the Isle of Man and possibly the Gower Peninsula won't be locked down entirely, as such?!

YukoandHiro · 18/09/2020 01:39

To those who disputed the rumour earlier, these things never come from nowhere...
