Quarantining : 2 weeks! Can they track you?

Just that.

If you're meant to be quarantining, they call you to ask if you're home. Can they track you?

Has anyone had these calls?

They are allowed to do random checks like just turning up at your door.

milveycrohn · 15/08/2020 23:04

But supposing you are at the bottom of the (long) garden, and dont hear them knock, or telephone.
Yes, I know they can track your smart phone, but not everyone has one

Wodden · 15/08/2020 23:11

@milveycrohn I don’t know, I just know if they turn up and you’re not there you get a fine.

Struckbylightning · 15/08/2020 23:14

My dh has just done a 2 week quarantine and nobody came knocking or even a phone call. It’s a shambles.

pontypridd · 15/08/2020 23:40

Is this legal?

Sally872 · 15/08/2020 23:45

I expect they can ask employer if you have physically been at work, or ask school children have been at school, if bank card has been used perhaps.

Only a small percentage will be checked so perhaps they rely on a report/suspicion first. Not sure.

ComeOnBridgett · 16/08/2020 00:05

Ok. Well firstly... they call you 3 times and if you don't answer, they contact the police who may come round.

They don't do random checks. Who on earth told you that @Wodden

It is about social responsibility, like wearing a seatbelt. You shouldn't need the threat of being checked on to make you 'do the right thing'. It is a bit frustrating for those of us who missed out on a holiday because we couldn't quarantine.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 16/08/2020 08:12

In countries who take it seriously like China you'll be tracked and checked yo within an inch of your life and carted off to a quarantine centre (like prison) should you be on breach, but here in the UK we are just a shambolic mess so probably a lot of people dont take quarantine seriously.

HandsOffMyRights · 16/08/2020 08:14

I'd like to know if anybody has received a visit from the police, considering they did not come out to a burglarly in my street.

rosesandcashmere · 16/08/2020 08:15

I have just completed 2 weeks, not a single call or anything! No one even asked where I had been at the airport or asked to see the form I completed online that says - 'you will be asked to present this'. I did quarantine despite being safer where I went than I am in my local town... Now I'm back to work - on planes anyway and not required to quarantine. It makes no sense. I was furloughed during my quarantine and stayed in anyway because I'm a responsible human (most of the time, also it was nice to have 2 weeks at home).

Aridane · 16/08/2020 08:17

But supposing you are at the bottom of the (long) garden, and dont hear them knock, or telephone

I was wondering that (or if you have headphones on)!

SummerNamechangeHappened · 16/08/2020 08:18

What if you just turn your phone off?

Dino90 · 16/08/2020 08:22

I know someone fined £3,500. The police phoned them and asked if they were home on the Tuesday. They did the same on the Wednesday but this time asked him to come to the front door where they were parked. Busted

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 16/08/2020 08:24

what happens if you gave a different address?

Newjez · 16/08/2020 08:28

I would hope that most of us would stay at home, obviously unless you're vision starts to go, and then it's off to spec savers at Barnard castle.

Hmmph · 16/08/2020 08:31

I wondered this. Not sure why everyone was panicking about rushing back from France tbh.

I suspect lots won’t be and just won’t bother with it. They’ll see out their holiday in France and return to work and school...

After all, just give your mobile number and then don’t answer any calls from people you don’t know. If they say they’ve been round, you were in the garden...

I’m not saying they are right, I’m just saying this will happen.

HandsOffMyRights · 16/08/2020 08:37

@CrowdedHouseinQuarantine

what happens if you gave a different address?
This is a good point.

I was in a pub with a friend. They only asked for my details (just one party) not my friend's. If I had been contacted then yes, I would have mentioned my friend. Not everybody would though.

bestbefore · 16/08/2020 08:37

And yet everyone moaned and said they wouldn't download an app on their phone when that was being muted! I don't think the gov can win can they?! People need to take some responsibility and if you know people flouting the quarantine then either report them or not but avoid them!

Orchidsindoors · 16/08/2020 08:44

It's a bit like track and trace. Weve eaten out quite a few times. Sometimes we were asked for details, sometimes not. Those that did, just asked for name and phone number of one member of the party. I dont normally answer calls that I dont recognise the number for, as do many other people.

Morfin · 16/08/2020 08:47

If they ring answer and say you are at home, how would they know. Fwiw I don't agree.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 16/08/2020 08:51

i guess the threat should be enough to curtail people.

i doubt people would be able to go back to work though, their colleagues would be murderous!

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 16/08/2020 08:53

Isn't it basically about being honest and understanding why one should quarantine?

To suggest you don't have to comply and you'll probably get away with it could be said of speeding, drink-driving and shoplifting etc.

Following the rules freely is just part of being in a responsible society rather than a us declining into a police state.

That said I have broken the speed limits occasionally but I would adhere to the quarantine rule.

Sally872 · 16/08/2020 08:54

You should quarantine because it is the right thing to do. That will be enough for many. The threat of checking (and they are checking though obviously not everyone) will be enough for many more. But there will always be people who break the rules. Just have to hope it is a small enough number to have no real impact.

I know airports were passing details to Scottish government imagine there is a similar process for euro tunnel/ferry.

If you give the incorrect details in a bar or don't answer unknown numbers then your own friends and family will be the ones who suffer as you spread it around if you do not get the track and trace call.
