Still breaking so no exact detail on location yet but -

"Separate households will not be allowed to meet indoors in Greater Manchester, East Lancashire and parts of West Yorkshire from midnight, the government has announced.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock said an "increasing rate of transmission" had been identified in those areas."

In Lancashire, the order covers Pendle, Hyndburn, Burnley, Rossendale and Blackburn with Darwen.

In Yorkshire, it applies to Bradford, Calderdale and Kirklees.

usernotfound0000 · 30/07/2020 21:36

I wonder if it applies to all postcodes? BD covers a vast area in West Yorkshire, some of which have low cases.

Is it literally just mixing in houses that isn't allowed? So can still meet your friends in the pub but not in your house? Bonkers.

Beebityboo · 30/07/2020 21:43

Do you suppose the outbreak is quite bad for them to be deciding last minute like this?

StatisticalSense · 30/07/2020 21:43

@usernotfound0000
The people this is aimed at wouldn't go to the pub for religious reasons. Whilst the government cannot come out and openly target certain groups in what they are doing it is pretty clear that this is a targeted move that takes into account that south asians are disproportionately testing positive and therefore it makes sense to bring in restrictions in areas that south asians are more likely to be participating in.

metro.co.uk/2020/07/22/nearly-three-times-people-dying-flu-pneumonia-coronavirus-13021417/

So deaths are below the average for four weeks in a row, with pneumonia and flu deaths unrelated to COVID accounting for 3x the number of COVID deaths, but locking down for Eid seems proportionate?

Ridiculous. Ridiculous, and honestly reeks a bit of bigotry. I doubt they'd do this kind of thing on Christmas Eve after letting people make plans for their Christmas with family for weeks.

usernotfound0000 · 30/07/2020 21:47

@StatisticalSense sadly I don't think this will make much difference to those people either. If they haven't followed the rules so far, why would they start now? I have family and friends in Bradford and the feeling all along is that a lot of people have just been carrying on as normal.

labyrinthloafer · 30/07/2020 21:51

I think we need more info from the government, I feel they tell us announcements but not much about the background picture.

PaperMonster · 30/07/2020 21:51

To be fair Blackburn with Darwen & Pendle have been under threat of this for the past couple of weeks, so not surprised about those.

Bumbl · 30/07/2020 21:54

Apparently it does include bars and restaurants as the indoor spaces - see Lewis Goodall's tweet

HyacynthBucket · 30/07/2020 21:55

[WombofOnesOwn] It is not bigotry to identify the demographic that has the highest number of cases, try to work out why, and address it.
What is bigotry, in an inverted form, is the lack of response by police and local authorities to the knowledge of who is affected by the new cases, and refusing to do anything about monitoring the causes for misguided or cowardly pc reasons.

Starisnotanumber · 30/07/2020 21:56

So officially I can't look after my gran daughter tomorrow while her mum and dad work.
I realise it's based on the fact it's eid but e live in an area where there are very feeMuslim families and no increase in covid cases.

ListenLinda · 30/07/2020 21:57

Be interesting to see what it means

It’s not fair to say they’re ‘locking down for Eid’. Birmingham with one of the largest Muslim populations is unaffected. And what do you want them to do? In areas with high transmission, the kinds of sustained, intergenerational household mixing brought about by Eid is the worst possible thing if you want to control the spread.

My qualm is that they’ve known about infection rates in the likes of Bradford for a while now. If they were actually serious about this, they would’ve implemented it at least a few days ago with a public information campaign etc. As it stands, people have made plans. They’ve cooked large dinners etc, and you bet they’re all going to visit each other as planned. Besides, many will be too busy making preparations to check the news the night before Eid anyway.

I think regional lockdowns/restrictions are far better than national ones. FWIW I live in one of the above mentioned areas so these restrictions affect me.

Lissy23 · 30/07/2020 22:01

I’m really gutted about this. I live in Calderdale, it’s only a small area of Calderdale that has a spike, not where I live. But this means I can’t rely on my parents in law as I have been lately, especially as my mental health has been so bad Sad

Bumbl · 30/07/2020 22:02

No meeting in private gardens allowed either according to bbc news .. how will this ever be policed?

pepperycinnamon · 30/07/2020 22:02

Unless they lift it before then that's back to school cancelled then.

Derbygerbil · 30/07/2020 22:03

The “flu/pneumonia” is a catch all for literally 100s or different types of bacteria/viruses/fungi that cause respiratory illness that leads to death. There are likely to be minuscule, if any, influenza viruses causing deaths at the moment as it is highly seasonal. These deaths will very largely be people who are very frail and at the end of their life, and an infection carries them off. Of course, Covid attacks old and vulnerable people too, but is far more deadly. Left alone the range of repair infections that are the final coup de gras for vulnerable/sick people won’t change much... But if Covid is just allowed to spread, it would clearly be far worse.... We had a very low number of cases in early February... just six weeks later it was out of control and the country was locked down.

This makes more sense. Although frustrating for the vast areas that are unaffected.
OnionString · 30/07/2020 22:06

Fucking nightmare. I really can't take much more. I want to go to sleep and not wake up for 12 months.

Seriously? So one household at a time in those places? Because there's nothing to stop the virus moving around a pub, is there? This had become ridiculous. Either lockdown (and I'm not actually suggesting that) or don't. But these stupid half this and half that are responsible for more chaos than the virus!
