Still breaking so no exact detail on location yet but -

"Separate households will not be allowed to meet indoors in Greater Manchester, East Lancashire and parts of West Yorkshire from midnight, the government has announced.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock said an "increasing rate of transmission" had been identified in those areas."

Because it's easy to blame the others. Not the nice white people who never ever break the rules.

It's a very handy excuse to let your racism shine through.

The rules are for everyone. If the government declined to make extra efforts and ethnic communities are worse affected, there would be uproar that no one cares about BAME in Britain.

Everyone in these areas have been told not to mix indoors , everyone is clear there’s a greater risk if you are BAME. Now it’s up to individuals to keep themselves and their communities safe.

At the risk of repeating my other posts pubs/gyms/shops have limited numbers, social distancing and queuing systems in place. You couldn’t mix with your sister indoors there either now.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 30/07/2020 23:36

they would never have done this so close to xmas

I hope it doesn't come to that, but depending on how the numbers go they may have no choice

The difference is that, should churches flout instructions to close, I'd expect action to follow

esveee · 30/07/2020 23:39

@StarFreak white teens are certainly socialising in big groups elsewhere... like at raves! 3 or 4 evenings last week the same group of white 14 year olds walked past my window and congregated on the street. 10-15 of them, no social distancing in sight. Let's not make it a race thing eh!

Bollss · 30/07/2020 23:40

@StarFreak

It's a white majority but mixed area.
Where's this notorious spot? Because I've seen just as many white teenagers hanging round ...
flumposie · 30/07/2020 23:41

Well I mixed in my North Yorkshire house / garden yesterday with family from Bradford yesterday . So a bit pointless. Plus the timing is ridiculous. People will not abide by it.

amusedtodeath1 · 30/07/2020 23:44

This has got nothing to do with Eid, it's not because of anything the Muslim community has or hasn't done.

The Government has increased restrictions because cases are rising rapidly. It's bad timing for Eid, but I'm not convinced it wouldn't happen on a Christmas Eve, if it needs to happen then it has to happen.

Happy Eid to everyone who celebrates.

HeIenaDove · 30/07/2020 23:45

The restrictions are SO about Eid but i absolutely DO think they would do the same at 10pm on Christmas Eve, AFTER money would have already been spent on presents, food etc.

People will have already spent money on ingredients and spent all tonight cooking.................THATS why the announcement is late. After the money has been spent and is in the economy...........they dont give a shit whether its Eid or Christmas!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 30/07/2020 23:45

People will not abide by it

You're quite right, but whether we like it or not the area concerned has a problem with the virus spreading, and unfortunately it appears to be affecting BAME communities disproportionately

So let's say a large enough number flout the rules and the numbers go through the roof ... what then?

HalloBrian · 30/07/2020 23:48

But it is a bit of a race thing in the area that is being targeted. In Blackburn and Pendle we were told numbers were on the rise predominantly in the South Asian community last week.

It's not just multi generational household. Its family groups living in several houses on the same terrace block. Outside of 2020 that's normally a positive thing. Cousins growing up as neighbours, extended family all in and out of one another's houses throughout the day. But that's a hard lifestyle to break off even in light of a pandemic, and I'm guessing that's a big factor in why the numbers have gone up.

Redolent · 30/07/2020 23:48

It’s going to be a very bad situation in these areas in two weeks. You’ll have vulnerable people just out from shielding, mixing with people from high risk professions. And people visiting multiple households in one day.

I don’t know what they’ll do if cases increase, but increase they will. They will almost certainly close places of worship etc at least.

They wouldn't have done it. They would never announce at around 10.30pm on Christmas eve via a twitter account that essentially Christmas is cancelled.
Icloud54 · 30/07/2020 23:50

@StarFreak How do you know they were Muslims? Do you mean south Asian?
I know plenty of white Muslims and a few south Asian Christians.

Redolent · 30/07/2020 23:51

Coincidentally, Libya has just announced a strict one week lockdown precisely to prevent mixing during Eid for the coming week. No leaving the house except to go to the supermarket.

Leflic · 30/07/2020 23:53

Nothing to stop you eating and celebrating outdoors though.

Hardly cancelled.

FaiIWorseAgain · 30/07/2020 23:58

Not tomorrow no, but it's meant to be pissing it down Sat/Sun. Tomorrow is meant to be super warm.

Bumbl · 31/07/2020 00:03

But private gardens are also included as "indoor places"

Keepdistance · 31/07/2020 00:04

The article the other day about a texan family having really big meal together ended up with granny dead.
I think it's very likely a lot of vulnerable and elderly will be having xmas alone this year. Especially if kids are at school. Especially qhen you think of the how busy shops are in the run up.
If areas cant cope with people families meeting up how can they cope with schools going back full. Imo that is when there will be resentment of the people whoever they are not SD.

MrsFezziwig · 31/07/2020 00:15

anon5000 actually the virus Is racist and it really doesn’t give a shit about your opinion of it.

I’m anything but a fan of the government and the timing and method of this announcement is ridiculous, but would it be less racist to do nothing and just let the virus rip through the community when it is known that BAME groups are particularly susceptible?

RedToothBrush · 31/07/2020 00:28

Lewis Goodall @lewis_goodall
Big questions

So you shouldn’t meet with your friends/family in a pub but you can go to a pub and be indoors with, erm, lots of people from different households

What does it mean for those shielding?

Will hospitality biz in NW get extra support?

But as I say comms has been a big, big issue tonight

We've only got the details 30 mins before changes come into effect (and not the full guidance which is to follow). The hours before journalists, MPs and local officials have been given contradictory information.

Given pubs/restaurants/social gatherings had already taken place tonight, a reasonable question might be, why not just announce in full when ducks are in a row at 9am tomorrow?

I personally don't have a problem with new lockdown restrictions if they are needed.

What I do take issue with is the absoluete clusterfuck car crash of the way they've announced this. Its appalling.

The journalists have been given a whole range of information and the new rules came into affect 20mins ago. Does that mean that anyone who was at a friends how at midnight is now breaking the law or have they just turned into pumpkins because no one knows what the hell this new lockdown actually means.

I find it utterly hilarous that pubs and restuarants can remain open at all and for this to be brought in.

I live in a small community where the local pub's regulars on a Friday are pretty much our mates. So if we go to the pub as normal and our friends all do the same are we allowed to talk to each other or does everyone just have to ignore everyone else? Its really bizarre and doesn't reflect real life.

Does this mean that people who live around the edges of these lockdown zones can be visited by friends who live in them and will people simply bypass the rules by booking a pub or restuarant just outside the lockdown area?

No one has a clue.

As for the Eid stuff. Its dreadful because they MUST have known that it was coming up and that the rates weren't looking great, so announcing a day or two ago was hardly difficult.

Its all bloody nonsense and that in itself undermines the government messaging on this especially when they can't get their act together to put out a cohesive explaination of what the restrictions they bought in 30 minutes ago actually mean.

Rudolphian · 31/07/2020 00:40

Basically what they mean by the guidance.
I can go to the gym, book a table in a restaurant with dozens of other or go to a pub, go to any number of shops but can't sit in the garden socially distanced with my mum.
I'm not surprised people are confused or not following the guidance, especially if they wake up tomorrow and aren't even aware of the announcement.

Rudolphian · 31/07/2020 00:46

But what have they actually put into place? We have been told we can't visit households. We can still go to the gym. Private nurseries are still open. The office is still open. Pubs and restaurants are still open, where we can mix with dozens of people. The hairdresser is still open and all the local shops and takeaways. We can still meet up outdoors just not in a private household, and apparently not mix households in pubs or restaurants. If they were going to lockdown either do it properly or not at all. And the way the announcement was communicated is a farce.
Flaxmeadow · 31/07/2020 01:21

People will have already spent money on ingredients and spent all tonight cooking.................THATS why the announcement is late. After the money has been spent and is in the economy...........they dont give a shit whether its Eid or Christmas

No. It will be because the numbers have risen in these areas very recently. In the last few hours probably and the Gov't had to act quickly

Flaxmeadow · 31/07/2020 01:25

Basically what they mean by the guidance.
I can go to the gym, book a table in a restaurant with dozens of other or go to a pub, go to any number of shops but can't sit in the garden socially distanced with my mum

It means you have to social distance anywhere indoors (including pub gardens etc) with people who are not from your own household
You also cannot have anyone from another household in your own house

notangelinajolie · 31/07/2020 01:27

Timing? Well I think it's spot on. Do people really think it would be better if the Gov had given us notice of a lock down for like a week on Sunday?
And the decision is racist? Um seriously? Greater Manchester is a big place and not all communities affected by this new lock down are predominately Asian or BAME.
Happy to stay away from family if it helps to stop this virus.
