Still breaking so no exact detail on location yet but -

"Separate households will not be allowed to meet indoors in Greater Manchester, East Lancashire and parts of West Yorkshire from midnight, the government has announced.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock said an "increasing rate of transmission" had been identified in those areas."

5 million people affected.

More madness. They are having a stricter lock down because people weren't obeying lock down rules. Well why do they think the rebels will obey even stricter rules. And how does anyone even know where to find this new information. They have gone completely bonkers.

usernotfound0000 · 30/07/2020 22:13

So this is the map for Bradford, absolutely crazy that all those unaffected areas are restricted due to a small area of high risk. Are they allowed to leave Bradford? What is to stop people travelling to Leeds and meeting in pubs/restaurants there? The rules are so unclear now and totally unenforceable.

Just bit the bullet 2 days ago and had agreed for my mum in Bradford to come and visit me in London. She so needs this as do I. She’s due next Friday but really not sure it’s a good idea now

cakeandcustard · 30/07/2020 22:14

How on Earth are they going to enforce it?!

If shops and pubs are open, it seems so irrelevant to ban family meeting. Private residences are too numerous to police effectively surely?

Are they really relying on everyone shopping their neighbours?

Allywill · 30/07/2020 22:17

Well is it just that we can’t meet up with other households inside but can still go to gym, restaurant, pub as long as we stay in our household group? I guess my cleaner can still come in the house as she could before?

OublietteBravo · 30/07/2020 22:17

The BD postcode covers part of North Yorkshire too (e.g. Skipton is BD23), so presumably it doesn’t cover the whole lot. I’d be curious to know where the Bradford boundary has been drawn.

HeresMe · 30/07/2020 22:18

Bradford no one is talking about reasons

PhilSwagielka · 30/07/2020 22:18

At least I've got a park near my house, thank fuck. If my parents do come up, and Mum is super paranoid so I have a feeling she won't, we'll all have to meet there instead of coming to my house.

How the shit are they going to police it? And no, I'm not planning on breaking rules.

ballsdeep · 30/07/2020 22:18

The people who are moaning about this are most probably the ones moaning the government took too long to lockdown last time. I agree with localised lockdowns. It's not ideal and it's shit if it happened on Christmas Eve, Passover or any religious festival but I think it needs to be done.

wejammin · 30/07/2020 22:18

Trying to figure out if nursery and holiday club will be open tomorrow - I'm in Manchester. These are indoor settings with multiple households. The kids only started holiday club yesterday, they absolutely loved it and I did my first full day of work in 16 weeks. I hoped it would last longer than 24 hours!

I’m not sure if it’s as simple as not obeying lockdown rules. My mum is in one of the affected areas and she’s just told me all the areas near her that are experiencing a spike. They are either low income areas and/or areas with higher populations of ethnic minorities and English is not a first language. Some of these areas are mostly populated by white people, so I’m not saying ethnic minorities are a problem before anyone starts. These are areas with high population density, low areas of green space, jobs that typically cannot be done from home and where language may be a barrier. The guidelines have been unclear, the government made it quite clear that we need to get back to work and masks have only just been made mandatory.
Mortgagehelp2020 · 30/07/2020 22:19

Is this aimed at eid? I don’t understand that they are saying no planned indoor meeting but you can go indoors to pubs, gyms etc as long at that is strangers? Why not of policed it more and hand fines out to deter. I’ve heard of nothing of the sort locally. I am not saying a full lockdown but the half measures are more confusing and maddening

Has anyone looked at the population stats of these areas? Are the spikes in certain populations or not?

Chaotic45 · 30/07/2020 22:21

This has to be to do with the fact that transmission indoors, in other people's homes, is much more risky than outside. This is not least because once indoors people are so often not socially distancing.

Do back to meeting outdoors where transmission is much less likely.

I guess people in pubs are supposed to be socially distancing, but once sharing a table with another household this is all going to pot.....

PhilSwagielka · 30/07/2020 22:22

@ballsdeep It already happened with Passover and Easter, they were both back when the original lockdown happened.

Why did they bother lifting lockdown in the first place? Did they not see this coming?

anon5000 · 30/07/2020 22:22

Blame the Muslims. Racist bollocks just like the Leicester lockdown thread.

walksen · 30/07/2020 22:23

Does this include households that have formed bubbles with a single person household? Hopefully they will clarify asap. Hard to understand releasing this kind of news with only a few hours notice

Yetiyoga · 30/07/2020 22:24

I have mixed opinions. Early on it felt like it was all about the economy and not about people's wellbeing and families etc... but things have been eased for a while now and people have been able to see family/ friends (supposedly with distancing) so if research shows that these areas are not distancing well from family/ friends then I am all for localised lockdowns and keeping pubs open. And I haven't even been to a pub yet! But think how many people have lost their jobs through covid? I feel it is unlikely that I would catch covid from a stranger in a pub who I'm nowhere near but am more likely to pick it up if a family member had it (more likely to get closer) hopefully localised lockdowns are only about 3 weeks now and it is not the same as last time, you can still exercise whenever and places are more open so it isn't as isolating.

Laburnam · 30/07/2020 22:24

My bfs son is a police officer in Bradford it is going to be impossible to police and even in full lockdown many didn’t heed the enforcement

My0My · 30/07/2020 22:24

Do Muslim families go to gyms and pubs? Haven’t these establishments got good routines re separation? Family gatherings don’t but of course will never be policed.
