Just heard this on breaking news.

From midnight tonight? Bad news for anyone who is there now and due to travel home. We were supposed to be going at the end of August and now I’m limbo about what to do!!!

OP posts:
LesLavandes · 25/07/2020 20:22

Annabelle - i can quarantine on return. Plus lone traveller to quiet destination.
However, I probably won't be going anywhere except hopefully to my home in France soon as I am about to sell and have to remove my contents. I hope France stays stable

Pertella · 25/07/2020 20:23

@annabel85

People who are selfish enough to go on foreign holidays in the middle of a pandemic are not going to quarantine.
Yes, we heard you the first time.

Has it crossed your mind that many families wont now be going on their holiday but they are losing a load of money because they won't get a refund for a holiday booked last year?

I dont expect that you give a shit about them though, huh?

2155User · 25/07/2020 20:25

@annabel85

You sound like you could do with a good holiday.

howfarwevecome · 25/07/2020 20:26

I'm only surprised that it wasn't brought back in earlier this week, seeing as the numbers were clearly trending back upwards quite quickly.

People gambled it wouldn't happen and lost. I'll admit, I don't have much sympathy for them.

nether · 25/07/2020 20:27

There are rises in case numbers in several places in Europe.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-53539015

If you have already booked to a destination currently permitted and quarantine free (both at destination and on return here), then you have to take the risk of being stuck somewhere. If you don't want to take that risk, holiday in Britain.

And I think employers will send people home on unpaid leave - they have a duty to their other employees (shielding pauses in 6 days and the exceptionally vulnerable will be back in workplaces, and the vulnerable probably don't want to be alongside someone who should be quarantining either).

Duffy888 · 25/07/2020 20:28

They said on sky news both Canaries and Balearics included but this was just as the news was breaking so could be wrong 🤷‍♀️

Yeah, we should have known last year that this was going to happen Hmm
Freeekedout · 25/07/2020 20:28

Pertella I bet there are loads of families (mine is one of them) who booked last year before we knew anything about the pandemic. We are waiting, and hoping, that the FCO stops non essential travel to the balearic so that we get our money back. As it stands, we don't want to go, we don't want to quarantine when we get back but the holiday company won't refund us.

mccavitythethird · 25/07/2020 20:29

@chomalungma

I love how some people selectively quote guidance

COVID-19 travel guidance

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office currently advises British nationals against all but essential international travel. Travel to some countries and territories is currently exempted

This advice is being kept under constant review. Travel disruption is still possible and national control measures may be brought in with little notice.

I didn't quote the part about some countries being exempted as that doesn't include Spain now does it - if you click on the section below for details it states that you do not need to quarantine on return from Spain which is obviously outdated now.

Mine too, we are booked to go to the Canaries next Saturday
Piggywaspushed · 25/07/2020 20:30

Right. Pay attention:

The WHOLE OF SPAIN is included in the quarantine. The Balearics and the Canaries are IN SPAIN.

Only MAINLAND SPAIN is now on FCO do not travel so no one can go there now unless trip is essential.

You can STILL go to the islands but need to quarantine upon return. At the moment

EasterIssland · 25/07/2020 20:31

@annabel85 I’m Spanish. Haven’t seen my family since Xmas. I’ve barely been out since March only met with in laws since middle of July and being wfh since March. Yet I’m selfish cuz in the middle of a pandemic I want to see my family. Maybe before calling selfish to peopke think twice about not everyone has got the same reasons for travelling abroad

Ps I also have another holiday booked to Asia purchases before all this crap kicked off if I don’t go then I’ll lose money. Must be that money falls from the trees for you

LesLavandes · 25/07/2020 20:35

Thanks Piggy for update

Freeekedout · 25/07/2020 20:35

Pertella A lot can happen in a week. Fingers and toes crossed that the FCO extend their travel ban beyond the mainland.

Piggy, well explained. I don't think everyone realised that there are two elements to this discussion - quarantine and FCO travel ban.

Piggywaspushed · 25/07/2020 20:36

You're welcome. It's the teacher in me Grin

Freeekedout · 25/07/2020 20:37

Piggy Lol. I'm a teacher too! 😁🤣

Chicchicchicchiclana · 25/07/2020 20:39

rolling eyes at whoever said quarantine is no biggy.

We were in quarantine as a family for more than three weeks as two members of the family had all the symptoms of Covid-19. You see how much fun it is trying to get enough supplies and medicines for four adults for that length of time when most supermarkets won't give you a delivery slot.

ballsdeep · 25/07/2020 20:39
@TrickyD

The Canaries are Portuguese territory not Spanish. And to the person who asked about Tenerife, that is in the Canaries so not in Spain.

You might want to revise your geography. Canaries are Spanish not Portuguese. And Tenerife is Spanish.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canary_Islands
Hmm

Alex50 · 25/07/2020 20:43

Why can’t you just have a test instead of self isolating?

LesLavandes · 25/07/2020 20:44

Chiccihic- I said I would be able to quarantine on return as I am a lone traveller and will be alone upon return. I can prepare before travelling. As yet I have no plans to travel.
Sorry for your situation

EasterIssland · 25/07/2020 20:45

@Alex50 if you get infected you don’t test positive on the first day but will take days to appear hence I guess that’s why a test at the end it’s not a proof that you’re covid free

Alex50 · 25/07/2020 20:47

What about India and America do you have to self isolate when you come back from there?

EasterIssland · 25/07/2020 20:50

I believe you do yes

Frazzled2207 · 25/07/2020 20:51

Whereas I’m not going anywhere this summer I do feel for those who booked before the pandemic and now face the choice between going anyway or losing their money. My trip to Spain in June was cancelled so I was lucky to get my money back.

And tenerife is in Canary Islands which is most definitely spain.

cologne4711 · 25/07/2020 20:54

They said on sky news both Canaries and Balearics included

FCO advice updated to exclude them. Quarantine only applies to mainland Spain.
