Just heard this on breaking news.

From midnight tonight? Bad news for anyone who is there now and due to travel home. We were supposed to be going at the end of August and now I’m limbo about what to do!!!

OP posts:
Piggywaspushed · 25/07/2020 20:09

easter that is the most wrong post I have seen on MN for a long time. And I have seen a lot!

annabel85 · 25/07/2020 20:10

@Rhine

It was obvious this could happen. Personally the last thing I’d want to do right now is jet off anywhere, planes are hotbeds for spreading viruses!
Why anyone would get on a plane at the moment unless it was absolutely essential.
SantaClaritaDiet · 25/07/2020 20:10

Of course the Canaries are Spanish (good grief)
but they are currently excluded from the travel exclusion. That might change though

www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/spain

From 25 July, the FCO advises against all non-essential travel to mainland Spain based on the current assessment of COVID-19 risks. Only the Canary Islands (Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Graciosa) and Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera) are exempt from the FCO advice against all non-essential international travel.

Lostnameperson · 25/07/2020 20:10

@TrickyD
Getting mixed up with Madeira perhaps?

NewNewt · 25/07/2020 20:10

Tenerfie is not in Spain Grin

The FCO website is v confusing itself but surely this must include balearics and canaries?

Piggywaspushed · 25/07/2020 20:11

I don't think the paragraph santa posted is at all confusing!

IncrediblySadToo · 25/07/2020 20:12

@Alloverthegrapevine

Redolent, I think if the employer isn't going to pay the quarantine period, the staff member won't tell them where they've been. I also think the kinds of employer who won't pay the quarantine period won't much care anyway.
Why should the employer pay? They didn't choose to go to Spain during a pandemic!
Duffy888 · 25/07/2020 20:12

Sky news confirmed canaries and Balearics included

ProfessorPootle · 25/07/2020 20:13

The Canaries are Portuguese territory not Spanish. And to the person who asked about Tenerife, that is in the Canaries so not in Spain.

Err, they’re Spanish, my close friend is from Tenerife, she’s definitely Spanish!

TBH when I saw which countries were on the ‘safe’ list this was obviously going to happen. EU countries with high numbers of cases were included while other countries with tiny numbers were excluded. Why? To shore up their tourist industries While hoping for the best.

My dh is from a country bordering the EU, they have very small numbers of cases, all their cases are from citizens travelling home from Italy, and yet we can visit Italy with no quarantine but would need to quarantine if we went to dh’s country?! It makes no sense, but that’s politics.

LesLavandes · 25/07/2020 20:13

Let's see what Boris dictates, whenever that may be

2155User · 25/07/2020 20:14

DOESNT INCLUDE CANARIES

NewNewt · 25/07/2020 20:16

Yes thats the new bit of info that needed, but isnt on the confusing FCO website - that airbridge has been suspended to mainland spain AND the islands.

Thats that ten, unless you are prepared to lie to everyone and say you're in cornwall not Majorca. I do wonder how they will police it - given that they aren't policing masks at all and, round here, havent got enough police to stop people nicking catalytic converters in broad daylight. I'm guessing they will just rely on jealous and bitter people dobbing them in.

EasterIssland · 25/07/2020 20:16

@NewNewt bet you a tenner Tenerife is Spanish

@Piggywaspushed I know ! Not sure why assume they’re Portuguese :)

LesLavandes · 25/07/2020 20:16

I want to travel for a little break to Europe September. I just looked on Expedia at their package holidays and every country I searched, they are not doing a package. I won't book if I am not Atol protected

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 25/07/2020 20:16

So the FCO advice is against non essential travel to Spain, not just quarantine on return.

itsgettingweird · 25/07/2020 20:17

Piggy https://www.gov.uk/government/news/spain-removed-from-travel-corridors-exemption-list?utmsource=9aa04f57-ab42-4167-bcde-faa0d08165ca&utmmmedium=email&utmcampaign=govuk-notifications&utmmcontent=immediate

Just mainland Spain.

Canary Islands are Portuguese

Then all my son, who was born in Tenerife , papers are wrong then.
They all state Spain and his passport was issued by Spanish consulate

Freeekedout · 25/07/2020 20:18

Duffy888 Really?! According to the FCO, you can still travel to Balearic and Canary Islands.

annabel85 · 25/07/2020 20:18

People who are selfish enough to go on foreign holidays in the middle of a pandemic are not going to quarantine.

Piggywaspushed · 25/07/2020 20:18

OK, think I will get my money back then...

2155User · 25/07/2020 20:18

@SantaClaritaDiet

I just read that, but now it’s been changed again

NewNewt · 25/07/2020 20:19

Its been like that for weeks though on the fco website and i know 3 separate families who are currently in the balearics. TUi have been running package holidays near continuously for 2 weeks (my friend was one of the first ones out of gatwick and was interviewed for the news)

2155User · 25/07/2020 20:21

Info

2 week Quarantine re-introduced when returning from Spain
Username7521 · 25/07/2020 20:21

@mccavitythethird I travelled to and from the canary island, and the fco advice wasn’t against all but essential travel. I phoned my travel insurance to ensure it was valid and the advice had definitely changed. It clearly states the advice was updated today (25 July)

jasjas1973 · 25/07/2020 20:22

This will wreck the Balearics tourist industry, friends of mine over there, were hoping to reopen 1st August, most of their guests are British.

I'd like to know Spain's rationale for opening up nightclubs and all night bars, utter stupidity, i read about the German and UK tourists drinking and fighting into the small hours @ Playa de Palma recently.

Piggywaspushed · 25/07/2020 20:22

It really hasn't Newt!!
