Just heard this on breaking news.

From midnight tonight? Bad news for anyone who is there now and due to travel home. We were supposed to be going at the end of August and now I’m limbo about what to do!!!

So glad TUI cancelled our holiday to Spain, we'd have been halfway through today so would have just had to lump it but I'm sure dh's work would have made him take it as unpaid leave (I wouldn't have blamed them either).

SantaClaritaDiet · 25/07/2020 18:47

What's the big deal for most people?

Schools are closed anyway, so children were not due to go anywhere, people will just keep working from home. A needed quarantine is not a deterrent for a bit of holiday for many people, and it shouldn't be.

Freeekedout · 25/07/2020 18:48

We booked a holiday in Majorca in Sept before any of this arose. Also purchased travel insurance at the same time. If we don't go will we be covered by the insurance?

We booked with Lastminute and tried to cancel last week. But discovered that their cancellation fee was equal to 100% of the cost of the holiday, and was payable from the day we booked. Never booking ahead like this again and definitely never with Lastminute 😡🤬😡🤬

Oldbutstillgotit · 25/07/2020 18:49

@ SantaClaritaDiet Scottish schools due to return on 11/8

Piggywaspushed · 25/07/2020 18:49

Plenty of people booked way back in 2019 you know!!

Hopeful our travel operator now won't force us to go like they have been up to this point...

1950swallpaper · 25/07/2020 18:50

The Police already said that they will only fine people for breaking quarantine in extreme circumstances. You are still allowed out for essentials. Personally, as I work from home, I'm not worried.

Piggywaspushed · 25/07/2020 18:51

A quarantine bloody is a deterrent! Quarantine means no supermarket shop for two weeks, no school, no return to work. Not everyone is WFH or able to.

Freeekedout · 25/07/2020 18:51

Hoping the same here. Have to pay whether we go or not. We said we'd go and make the best of it but we're very nervous about taking DC with us. I really hope our holiday will be cancelled.

Youngatheart00 · 25/07/2020 18:53

A quarantine is much more severe than the circumstances for most people at the heart of the lockdown. No trips out for groceries or daily exercise. Total lockdown.

annabel85 · 25/07/2020 18:54

Fair play to the government for actually not being months behind for once. I said in the Spain thread they'd end up acting too late again.

Anyone going abroad this summer knows the risks.

Alloverthegrapevine · 25/07/2020 18:54

I predict this will have been lifted before the last 2 weeks of August or a lot of people who think their children are going back to school will be disappointed. Teachers have been told that if their holiday was booked before quarantine was imposed, they can wfh for the quarantine period. I imagine government will make sure that doesn't happen.

Is it not beyond the realms of all possibility that some jobs aren’t able to be performed from your mac in your home office? 😒
covetingthepreciousthings · 25/07/2020 18:54

How is this actually going to be monitored and enforced though?

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 25/07/2020 18:56

SantaClarita Dh can't work from home. Plenty of people can't. As Old has already said Scottish schools are due back early August. If someone has flown out earlier today for a week long break that means they'll be in quarantine until 15/8. They may have made a different choice if their flight was later tonight. Of course some people will still be happy/able to go.

speakout · 25/07/2020 18:56

Why would anyone have booke a foreign holiday in such uncertain times?

Drivingdownthe101 · 25/07/2020 18:57

@speakout

Why would anyone have booke a foreign holiday in such uncertain times?
Lots of people booked before these ‘uncertain times’. Lots of people have booked to see family they haven’t been able to see for months.
Piggywaspushed · 25/07/2020 18:57

You don't think some of us booked in January or before??

Hollyhobbi · 25/07/2020 18:57

I doubt anyone is covered by holiday insurance either.

Orangeblossom78 · 25/07/2020 18:59

I take it this includes Majorca?

stopwining · 25/07/2020 18:59

Will he good to know if this included the islands has anyone heard anymore on this? I'm flying to Ibiza tomorrow

annabel85 · 25/07/2020 19:00

I understand from an economic perspective why holidays abroad were re started but they were never really a good idea were they?

It's not really a net benefit to the economy though because its open borders that keeps spreading the virus and causing more lockdowns and quarantines and stricter measures.

Holidays should have been written off this year, travel only for emergencies.

2155User · 25/07/2020 19:01

Following to see about any information for Canary Islands

Alloverthegrapevine · 25/07/2020 19:01

The busiest time for travel agents is between Christmas and New Year. These holidays were booked before anyone had heard of Covid 19 and people are being told they can't cancel without forfeiting the money.

Also, I actually did LOL at the idea that "everyone" will just wfh for their quarantine. Like DS1 who works in a restaurant or DS2 who's doing an engineering apprenticeship or DH a builder, or me a teacher who would actually be paid to wfh but it absolutely will have an impact if things don't change before the end of August

ineedaholidaynow · 25/07/2020 19:02

Does this apply for Spanish residents/holiday makers coming from Spain to here too?

Piggywaspushed · 25/07/2020 19:02

Simon Calder just said the insurance depended on whether Spain also goes on to FCO list.
Whatever happens, Ryanair will still be ramming people on their planes...
