Just heard this on breaking news.

From midnight tonight? Bad news for anyone who is there now and due to travel home. We were supposed to be going at the end of August and now I’m limbo about what to do!!!

Great news Piggy!

Piggywaspushed · 28/07/2020 19:48

Thanks. Hope it works out for others too, who ,through no fault of their own, lost out on a holiday abroad.

Thanks not holding my breath with Oleary.

No... he's not the most reasonable. So glad I had a package. Booked illogically early for maximum over expenditure Wink

BarefootHippieChick · 28/07/2020 20:40

Apparently there are an awful lot of Spaniards, many from the Catalonia region, who have holiday homes in menorca and spend the whole of August there. It will be interesting to see if cases in the Balearics start rising again.

BarefootHippieChick · 28/07/2020 20:42

I saw that earlier piggy , good news!!

Piggywaspushed · 28/07/2020 20:59

Thanks barefoot.

I think that was part of the thinking about the Balearics. Still feel sorry for the canaries, though.

@IrmaFayLear

But what if you have to quarantine from France, CouldBeOuting? You may wfh and not be bothered, but others might have “outside world” jobs, and what about sending dcs back to school in September? Are children who have been to quarantine countries prior to the start of term going to be off for two weeks?

We cancelled our holiday. Great shame, but these are unprecedented times and to my mind the game was not worth the candle.

Then I will quarantine! I work in school and if I return from France on my scheduled date and quarantine for 14 days I will miss two days of work - and that’s because the start of term (staff only) has been brought forward from the original dates. DH WFH anyway. DS not due back at college until more than 14 days after our return.

My union have told me that although school may threaten disciplinary action, they cant actually do this if I can show holiday was booked before March.

I am having weekly covid tests anyway (our borough expect school staff to be weekly tested) so will be tested on my return.

Missing those two days will mean losing 9 hours pay (I’m part time) so less than the cost of one way travel from Calais to Folkestone.

IrmaFayLear · 29/07/2020 09:24

What if everyone who works in a school says they’ll miss 2. days (or more)? Sigh.

Piggywaspushed · 29/07/2020 09:28

What borough is getting staff routinely tested!? I have never heard of this!

That would be too outing! But it’s a London Borough.

Personally I think it is a disgusting waste of testing facilities but....

Piggywaspushed · 29/07/2020 10:18

Well, I think if every teacher/TA in the country was routinely tested it would put a lot of minds at rest! I didn't know anywhere had invested in this, though.

Not intending to out you, sorry!

Technically I could actually have been on holiday on those days. Published dates at the time I booked my holiday were that term started on 7th Sept for staff and 8th Sept for pupils. Changed at end of June to 3rd Sept for staff and 8th Sept for pupils.

I have paid over £2.5 k for this holiday. Already lost my Easter holiday, worked through Easter and May half term including bank holidays (my contract is 39 weeks per year so I’ve already worked for 3 extra weeks).

I don’t even think the borough is paying for it! I think it is coming out of whatever budget the U.K. testing facilities are paid from.

I don’t even have to prove where I work. I just have to say my employer has requested it and I and everybody else in my household can have a weekly test!

Piggywaspushed · 29/07/2020 10:26

This (or at least some notion of teacher entitlement to tests) was something the gov promised before about 3 days later they opened it up to everyone anyway. Your borough must view that as some kind of loophole for tests on demand. Interesting!

Staplemaple · 29/07/2020 10:43

You don't even have to say anything about where you work now on the website, you just register for a test and they send one. Admittedly not sure what would happen if you applied for one every week, there would likely be a point you had to prove why

CouldBeOuting · 29/07/2020 10:50

Our LA introduced it at the end of May. A neighbouring borough had been doing it for a couple of weeks before then. My first test I couldn’t actually get a slot IN my borough and had quite a long drive to a test centre outside of London but subsequent tests I’ve been able to get locally and most recently by post. The test packs are delivered by Amazon!

We're thinking of going to Spain within the next week. Me and my husband both work from home. I was sheided. So the kids are used to playing in the garden only.

My family is over there. I miss them. For us to self quarantine is of no bother.

Piggywaspushed · 29/07/2020 11:16

You realise there is a FCO advisory against all non essential travel though? It isn't 'just' quarantine.

Happyheartlovelife · 29/07/2020 11:16

The issue people have flying out there now. Is insurance.

If you had to pay for hospital if you got Covid out there. Could be in the 100's if thousands right now. Especially if you were in icu etc.

Happyheartlovelife · 29/07/2020 11:19

@Piggywaspushed but right now it's allowed.

Happyheartlovelife · 29/07/2020 11:20

Plus we wouldn't be staying at a hotel. We wouldn't be going to the beach. Or to bars. We'd be staying with my parents.

Piggywaspushed · 29/07/2020 11:21

it might be allowed but it is still a strong message. Do you not have insurance then?

Alloverthegrapevine · 29/07/2020 11:22

Is it "allowed"? I suppose it's allowed in that this is a free country and you're allowed to make your own decisions but travelling against FCO advice will invalidate insurance and likely reduce the possibility of consular assistance, should you need it.

Piggywaspushed · 29/07/2020 11:26

Also, no money back on any flights but again you may be able to live with that.

My DM is in NYC. I'm not about to head over there, though!
