Just heard this on breaking news.

From midnight tonight? Bad news for anyone who is there now and due to travel home. We were supposed to be going at the end of August and now I’m limbo about what to do!!!

OP posts:
Piggywaspushed · 25/07/2020 19:58

I feel your pain freeeked! We never wanted to go because DH ahs a heart condition but travel company were being proper shits. I really hope they don't get my money off me.

Piggywaspushed · 25/07/2020 19:58

Ryanair ad on Sky during news. Oh the irony.

Anotherdayanothernight · 25/07/2020 19:59

@annabel85 can't say I agree, have many friends commuting in to London, no social distance there, and they are scared, and another friend lives near Brighton beach, not much distance there either

@SantaClaritaDiet

What's the big deal for most people?

Schools are closed anyway, so children were not due to go anywhere, people will just keep working from home. A needed quarantine is not a deterrent for a bit of holiday for many people, and it shouldn't be.

We don't all work from home, surely you realise that?
Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 25/07/2020 20:00
@Drivingdownthe101 not so much on here but on a couple of the UK holiday abroad groups on FB there was a very general belief that all is fine now and if anyone dared suggest things could change at a moments notice or insurance could be an issue you got jumped on and shot down.
Well, quite. Same as on MN really isn't it? No one has been allowed to be cautious without having "dementor" yelled at them. Only blind optimism is acceptable.

DisobedientHamster · 25/07/2020 20:00

@Alloverthegrapevine

It's all irrelevant anyway really because no one will be enforcing it. You can travel home from the airport on public transport for a start.

Like all the other restrictions, those who have the kinds of jobs that mean they can quarantine on full pay will do it, everyone else will carry on and no one will stop them.

Piggywaspushed · 25/07/2020 20:01

Presumably all this 'no one will quarantine anyway' is the reason why the FCO have also issued a do not travel order for the mainland...

Piggywaspushed · 25/07/2020 20:01

Allegedly.

mrsBtheparker · 25/07/2020 20:01

Will this apply to everyone arriving from Spain or just British nationals? We've been letting all and sundry in, if it doesn't apply universdally then it's pointless.

TrickyD · 25/07/2020 20:02

Do you think this Will apply to the Canary Islands too given that geographically its nowhere near mainland Spain

The Canaries are Portuguese territory not Spanish. And to the person who asked about Tenerife, that is in the Canaries so not in Spain.

jasjas1973 · 25/07/2020 20:02

Shouldn't be bloody traveling overseas during a pandemic

Write to your MP/Johnson then? Govt opened up international travel, bit rich to then have a go at the people who took up this, rather than the Govt who allowed it.

Freeekedout · 25/07/2020 20:03

Piggywaspushed Oh no, that is a worry. When we read the small print after we decided to cancel, it said that the full amount would be due from the date we booked the holiday last September. In other words, if we decided before Christmas that we didn't want to go, we would still have to pay for the whole trip. I hope you can get your money back. God luck.

pollylocketpickedapocket · 25/07/2020 20:04

@Uhoh2020

Good question, would love to know.
DisobedientHamster · 25/07/2020 20:05

@whataballbag

Would the quarantine apply to family (living with) the holidaymaker?

As in the whole household quarantine even if just one has been away?

No, which is why the whole thing is stupid - another posturing message from the government that's unenforceable and ridiculous.
Oaktree55 · 25/07/2020 20:05

@Lelophants

I honestly don't get why people keep being surprised by this.
Exactly. I’m a happy realist as I won’t be surprised by what Covid brings this winter. It’s not rocket science what will happen but most seem utterly unaware of simple maths/science. There’s going to be a lot of disruption to daily life.
2155User · 25/07/2020 20:06

@TrickyD

Really? I thought they were Spanish

EasterIssland · 25/07/2020 20:07

@TrickyD

The Canaries are Portuguese territory not Spanish. And to the person who asked about Tenerife, that is in the Canaries so not in Spain.

You might want to revise your geography. Canaries are Spanish not Portuguese. And Tenerife is Spanish.

BarbaraofSeville · 25/07/2020 20:07

The Canaries are Portuguese territory not Spanish

Are they now? Hmm

People wanting to know if canaries or Balerics are included in this latest ruling will need to check the FCO guidance rather than relying on Internet threads which may be confusing.

I don't personally blame people for travelling. However, it's hardly a surprise that restrictions are happening and will keep happening and are changing.

Even if the UK govt didn't expressly forbid travel, it never meant it was risk free, and it meant even less than foreign govt would be so welcoming either!

No one is wishing it (apart from a bitter few), but it's hardly unrealistic to plan for the possibility of a strict lockdown whilst you are away somewhere (and be stuck in your hotel room or other), and a quarantine when you are back.

Piggywaspushed · 25/07/2020 20:08

Canaries are definitely Spanish!!!

EasterIssland · 25/07/2020 20:08

To those asking about the canaries ... why not? They’re Spanish as well and many Spanish people are at the moment travelling there on their holidays so could spread the virus. Many mainland places in Spain have lower numbers at the moment and yet they’ll need to isolate anyone coming from there

LesLavandes · 25/07/2020 20:08

As far as I know, there has been no official announcement. I doubt there will one this late in the evening

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 25/07/2020 20:09

Madness that holidays were allowed, it should be essential travel only regardless of when booked.

I’d rather lose money than risk taking or carrying back the virus.
