Just heard this on breaking news.

From midnight tonight? Bad news for anyone who is there now and due to travel home. We were supposed to be going at the end of August and now I’m limbo about what to do!!!

OP posts:

We tried to cancel but still had to pay the full amount whether we travel or not

If you tried to cancel then how can they enforce you to pay more money? What's going to happen if you didn't pay any more money.......you weren't going to travel anyway ?

Freeekedout · 27/07/2020 17:57

It was in the terms and conditions. Lastminute policy is the full amount is payable if you cancel, even if you cancel as soon as you book 😡 Last week we said we would go and make the best of it so we paid the balance. And now they've brought the quarantine rule in 😢

mrpumblechook · 27/07/2020 17:58

Most people book summer hols in January that's really not unreasonable. You are being ridiculous

No most people don't book and pay the full balance in January.

And what would of happened if you didn't pay it? Surely if you hadn't of paid the balance they would have cancelled the holiday themselves due to non payment

Not if you are buying flights.Hmm

There is no need to book flights in January. Sometimes you need to reserve accommodation quite early but that is with just a deposit. Often no deposit is required for accommodation.

You book flights when they are at a good price or you have the money availableHmm
Freeekedout · 27/07/2020 18:09

We paid the balance because we were going to go and make the best of it. Now that they've brought in the quarantine restrictions we don't want to risk further changes whilst we are out there - we've seen how quickly changes can be implemented.

mrpumblechook · 27/07/2020 18:10

You don't have to book flights six months in advance to get a good price.

Piggywaspushed · 27/07/2020 18:10

BBC just announced the FCO has extended the travel ban to the whole of Spain including the islands.

Piggywaspushed · 27/07/2020 18:13

Ever ehard of apackage holiday pumblechook??

You book both things at the same time?

That'll be the thing all travel journalist are now advising people to do because of the greater protection.

Many many people book months in advance because they have no flexibility over dates or want the best selection of accommodation.

I have no idea why you think this is unusual or foolish.

Piggywaspushed · 27/07/2020 18:13

In fact the man on the TV just said 'book a PACKAGE holiday'

Piggywaspushed · 27/07/2020 18:15

And yo don't get your refund unless you pay your balance. Simon Calder. Martin Lewis all advised travellers to pay full balances.
You are talking absolute rot, you really are.

sunglasses123 · 27/07/2020 18:15

So now the whole of Spain including the islands is now out for everything bar non essential travel.

FGS - what a stupid decision and it will kill off the islands.

Oh OK then Confused can tell how often you book flights, No such thing as last minute cheap flights anymore especially at peak times like we are in now.
sunglasses123 · 27/07/2020 18:16

I wonder if they doing this because they want people to get their money back in some cases. Its not the right decision in my opinion.

Piggywaspushed · 27/07/2020 18:18

I suspect it is because no one was understanding the rules. There has been so much obvious confusion on here, such as people suggesting that the quarantine was the only problem , not a FCO advisory. I think the whole country just makes for more clarity , but, yes, awful for the islands, especially the Canaries.

I wonder if they are wary of the number of Spaniards who will travel after 1 August to the islands and coasts?

Piggywaspushed · 27/07/2020 18:20

Grant Shapps is apparently coming home early . Still going to quarantine obviously.

sunglasses123 · 27/07/2020 18:29

Thing is this is all about face saving. Instead of saying the islands are different they are assuming people are thick and say the whole of Spain. That wont cover the person who thought that the CI were part of Portugal or the people who listened to Boris speech before lockdown and didnt understand because of xxx complex issue that was unique to them.

Maybe they do need to make it simplier for people to understand.....

BarefootHippieChick · 27/07/2020 18:32

piggy ours is a Ryanair flight! She confirmed our flight and villa are both available and what were our plans and i just said we don't wish to travel without valid insurance and know we're entitled to a full refund on a package and she said no problem and we'd receive it mid August. Keep holding on and you should get a refund surely?!

Coffeeandteav · 27/07/2020 18:35

You really do. I could see my Lisbon flights becoming more expensive. You are just being awkward now.
BarefootHippieChick · 27/07/2020 18:46

It's also interesting that last week the papers were all saying an airbridge with Portugal was imminent within days....didn't happen.
This morning all spouting that the government were in talks with Spanish ministers to make the Spanish islands exempt from quarantine...and now look...

Just goes to show you nobody knows anything and things can change in 5 minutes.

Piggywaspushed · 27/07/2020 18:51

That's fabulous barefoot. Did you get her name? I have found Jamie is the only one who does anything usually...

mrpumblechook · 27/07/2020 18:52

Just because I don't book flights nine months in advance it doesn't mean I wait until the last minute.
