Just heard this on breaking news.

From midnight tonight? Bad news for anyone who is there now and due to travel home. We were supposed to be going at the end of August and now I’m limbo about what to do!!!

@BEANBAG765

This is totally unenforceable. I know a family, both doctors with their child who returned from Dubai and did not quarantine for even a day. People are ignorant and I am shocked that as doctors they should have known better. What do you do? Report them? To who?
If it were true they had breached quarantine rules then you could report to the police and their employer or regulatory body.

However be very careful as different rules apply to medical staff so you should read up before making an accusation.

It shouldn't need to be policed. If people go then they factor in the requirement to quarantine in return. It shouldn't need to be enforced.
Sadly the pandemic has shown that people really are that selfish.

This with bells on.

You have previously met some humans? Even during the blitz, that period of mythical community spirit, plenty of people were making a bit by selling on the black market.

This pandemic has just shown what humans are always like, some are more selfish than others, some are more risk-taking.

It's why countries need decent leaders and decent public services. Oh dear - no wonder we've handled it badly.

labyrinthloafer · 26/07/2020 07:04

I just read that grant shapps went to Spain so we can see if he quarantines. He shouldn't have ignored the cabinet instruction to holiday in the UK!

Roselilly36 · 26/07/2020 07:06

Canary & Balearics are not exempt, you can travel to them but you still need to quarantine upon return.

Piggywaspushed · 26/07/2020 07:10

labyrinth he issued the advice himself and then backtracked!

He is the transport minister and it's the DoT who are in charge of the quarantining stuff.

I am sure we will expect some statement from him adopting some look on the bright side rhetoric.

GS is the reason we paid our balance in early May. He was the one who went on the TV and said no one should expect foreign travel this summer. Unless you pay balance you don't ever get a penny refund, so we paid balance having paid a hefty deposit in early January. Not all that much later, flights started reopening and holidays started 'going ahead' And have been wrangling with holiday company since.

No sympathy for Shapps

labyrinthloafer · 26/07/2020 07:12

The government make me want to weep Sad

WhentheDealGoesDown · 26/07/2020 07:13

So are our much depleted police force going to be rushing round checking people are quarantined as well as answering all the calls about non mask wearers that will inevitably happen

Well no, but all the measures in place in countries like Germany, NZ and Canada do emphasise why cutting the police in order to cut corporation tax really hasn't benefitted many average voters!
MrsKingfisher · 26/07/2020 07:30

How is this enforceable? Why can't people be tested on arrival like other countries are doing? I know someone who is in Spain, she will come home collect her son from his grandparents and not give a shit. People are selfish.

bumblingbovine49 · 26/07/2020 07:37

The tragic irony is that many of the outbreaks in Spain have probably been started by tourists. So people go there on holiday spread the illness and then come home. The self isolating when they come home helps the UK ( if.it is adhered to) but Spain are left with the consequences unless they impose the same rules to visitors . It is a mess

TrickyD · 26/07/2020 07:40

@shinynewapple thanks for jumping in to correct my idiotic mistake for which I have already apologised. Next time RTFT.

Doctors are most likely exempt, there was a huge list of exemptions and medical staff was on it, also train drivers and various other key workers, I wouldn’t be surprised if cabinet ministers were exempt too
EasterIssland · 26/07/2020 07:48

@bumblingbovine49 that’s not true. Many of the Spanish outbreaks have started In family get togethers or youngsters partying. Where I’m from the outbreak have started because teenagers were celebrating the end of the student year
In other places it’s been family parties like bbqs and so.

And in Lleida the outbreak started because the appealing conditions the fruit pickers are living in. They are so poor that as soon as once gets ill the rest will get as well and because nobody cares about them and they need to work to live they’ve continued working even if Ill.

Not to speak about the football club that despite having 4 players infected they didn’t say anything and wanted to play a match. They’ve now 28 infected

Or the one where a football match has been arranged were the teams were infected vs non infected.

Most of the scenarios I ve read about are in non tourists places.

Piggywaspushed · 26/07/2020 07:49

This isn't true. Most of the outbreaks have been well away from traditional tourist areas.

Like Barcelona ? Hmm
Piggywaspushed · 26/07/2020 07:51

I appreciate this all happened on the hoof last evening but the papers are really botching reporting this. they barely mention the FCO advice against travel to the mainland and just report on the quarantine aspect. I suspect some travel companies will take advantage of this cloudiness.

MarshaBradyo · 26/07/2020 07:53

Yes they should state both. Especially if people need to check their insurance re FCO change.

Piggywaspushed · 26/07/2020 07:53

Read easters post above. The biggest Catalonia outbreak was in Lleida.

Not many Brits go to Barcelona in summer season, comparatively speaking and it had barely opened up to foreign travellers anyway. The main tourist movement in Spain occurs early August when Spaniards flock to the coast. If it was all the fault of tourism, the Balearics and the Costas would have biggest outbreaks.

Piggywaspushed · 26/07/2020 07:55

They should also have a much better chance of a refund marsha and yet the ST says tourists may have a fight on their hands to get a refund. that would suggest travel firms allowing people to travel against FCO advice which is regarded as unscrupulous.

The ones with fights ahead are the ones going to Canaries and Balearics, who can still travel.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 26/07/2020 07:55

@WhentheDealGoesDown where did you read about train drivers please? We cannot go as DH and I are both drivers and he is unable to quarantine after our return? I can however.

All those med cruises going from Barcelona means a lot of tourists though, admittedly not this year.

It was in the government guidelines when quarantine was first announced a few weeks ago, there was a huge list of exceptions with loads of key worker jobs mentioned, it will be on the gov.uk website, obviously you need to check that you are the right sort of driver, but I am sure that public transport drivers were there. Though it may be if you are already there rather than knowingly going out there, the devil will be in the detail.

jimmyjammy001 · 26/07/2020 08:04

We didn't book as had done research before hand knowing they could retract air bridges instantly without warning, others have taken the risk, now it has happened people who have taken the risk are in uproar.

Piggywaspushed · 26/07/2020 08:09

I don't think that's true. The main people , quite rightly, who are in uproar are those who booked a long long time ago and are left high and dry by travel firms, who won't refund or , in some cases, even negotiate dates.
