Just heard this on breaking news.

From midnight tonight? Bad news for anyone who is there now and due to travel home. We were supposed to be going at the end of August and now I’m limbo about what to do!!!

OP posts:
notimagain · 26/07/2020 08:13

where did you read about train drivers please? We cannot go as DH and I are both drivers and he is unable to quarantine after our return? I can however.

It might be industry/employer/even job tittle specific so he might need to check with his employer.

Under the quarantine rules there definitely were some groups of workers (mainly involved in international transport, not sure about medical) who were allowed to return to the UK having been abroad, travel to their place of confinement for quarantine but for the following 14 days were allowed to go directly to/from their place of work to perform a rostered duty/rostered function...

Lardlizard · 26/07/2020 08:13

I’m shocked at the short notice for this, what do you think to the governments campaign to eat outfit help out then now?
They are sending the public so many mixed messages

EasterIssland · 26/07/2020 08:25

The worse bit in Barcelona is in hospitalet de llobregat. Another non touristic place. This is one of the highest density place all in Europe so it’s normal as well that as soon as a few catch it it’ll spread.

And this is what I meant about fruit pickers if anyone wants to reas about it

Chesneyhawkes1 · 26/07/2020 08:26

@notimagain I had a look and I think it's just Eurostar drivers. Which makes sense.

itsgettingweird · 26/07/2020 08:31

@bumblingbovine49

The tragic irony is that many of the outbreaks in Spain have probably been started by tourists. So people go there on holiday spread the illness and then come home. The self isolating when they come home helps the UK ( if.it is adhered to) but Spain are left with the consequences unless they impose the same rules to visitors . It is a mess
I don't believe this is true.

El Pais - the Spanish newspaper reports its outbreaks that started in nightclubs between Spanish higher education leavers when they opened a few weeks ago. Many went out to celebrate end of term.

Nightclubs have been closed won again for minimum if 2 weeks.

And also, as within the UK, outbreaks in agricultural establishments.

Most of the outbreaks aren't in particularly heavy tourist spots.

itsgettingweird · 26/07/2020 08:33

Easter sorry I just repeated what you posted! I hadn't seen yours when I responded as was typing at the time!

But there's always the hope the truth will out if more people type it Wink

EasterIssland · 26/07/2020 08:43

No worries ;) @itsgettingweird

Orangeblossom78 · 26/07/2020 08:49

There are a number of people who are exempt, regardless of their country of origin, including:
Road haulage and freight workers
Medical and care professionals providing essential healthcare
Seasonal agricultural workers if they self-isolate where they are working
UK residents who ordinarily travel overseas at least once a week for work

From BBC www.bbc.co.uk/news/explainers-52544307

Orangeblossom78 · 26/07/2020 08:49

So medics can go straight back to work and not quarantine. Makes so much sense Hmm

Sallycinnamum · 26/07/2020 08:53

Majorca is petitioning the government to be exempt from the new rules apparently. We were due to fly out there in a few weeks but I just think we're going to have to accept it's a no go.

BEANBAG765 · 26/07/2020 09:00

Oh I am not reporting them! I am not policing the world.
I am only truly shocked how they should have known better.
Obviously no one cares for anyone else.
I know exactly the day they returned and had seen them out and about 4 times in the first week.

BEANBAG765 · 26/07/2020 09:03

Just to add to the above, if they claim exemption as professionals, what exemption is there for the child?
Or they have some sort of superior immunity?

notimagain · 26/07/2020 09:06

So medics can go straight back to work and not quarantine. Makes so much sense

The BBC may have their shorthand version of the rules but I believe the link below takes you to the actual definitive list of those subject to some form of exemption from UK quarantine and any conditions attached.

www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-travellers-exempt-from-uk-border-rules/coronavirus-covid-19-travellers-exempt-from-uk-border-rules

I'll leave it to the reader to interpret if the rules mean a UK resident health care professional such a GP gets an exemption when they return from holiday.

lifeafter50 · 26/07/2020 09:10

those who booked a long long time ago and are left high and dry by travel firms
Surely they will have travel insurance tho? Are insurance companies refusing to pay out?
(Although if they didn't bother with insurance, more fool them!)

Freeekedout · 26/07/2020 09:15

lifeafter50 I booked in September and took out travel insurance with the post office. They will not cover epidemics or pandemics so we can either go then waste two weeks of our school summer holidays when we come back (assuming we could actually get back), or lose the £2.4k altogether. We don't want to go. Paying for an alternative holiday in the UK is not an option because the money was spent on the holiday to Majorca in good faith before Wed even heard of covid. We are totally screwed.

MorningManiacMusic · 26/07/2020 09:19

Might the company not cancel, Freek?

This seems to be yet one of the other anomalies of the whole thing- people who book early penalised because insurance doesn't cover it, people booking recently getting the chance to cancel/move/change etc. (By and large, I know not everyone)

Freeekedout · 26/07/2020 09:22

MorningManiacMusic Lastminute's cancellation policy is dreadful so I doubt they will cancel it for us. Their doubt days that of you want to cancel, the full amount is the cancellation fee - and this applies from the date you book the holiday. I pity anybody who, like us, had booked a holiday with them.

Piggywaspushed · 26/07/2020 09:47

Have you tried the CMA and/or Which?

Piggywaspushed · 26/07/2020 09:50

life insurance policies taken out after mid March don't cover this and many taken out before also don't.

Many travel companies are forcing people to cancel because then in their Ts and Cs they might not get a refund.

Which/Martin Lewis/ CMA are all clear that this is not a travel insurance issue. the holiday company should refund.

Not everyone books insurance at the exact moment of booking a holiday, especially if they use a specialist provider : the have it at the time of booking has always been viewed as a commission scam.

Youngatheart00 · 26/07/2020 10:00

Anyone know much about air bnb cancellation flexibility? We booked in Feb and have paid the full balance but the cancellation policy is showing as strict - ie we’d only get refund of the cleaning fee! Unsure if I’m best off contacting the host directly or air bnb direct. But I’m not hopeful for a refund, maybe a change of dates. I think we can change our BA flights

Freeekedout · 26/07/2020 10:04

Not sure what the C A or Which can do, Piggy? Have you been able to get a refund?

I think the only way we'll get our money back is if the travel ban extends being the mainland to cover the islands as well, or if BA cancel our flight. Many of their flights have been rerouted (not sure why) but ours still appears to be going as planned.

Freeekedout · 26/07/2020 10:05

CMA even!

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 26/07/2020 10:08

@lifestooshort123

*tigger1001 It shouldn't need to be policed. If people go then they factor in the requirement to quarantine in return. It shouldn't need to be enforced. Sadly the pandemic has shown that people really are that selfish.*

This with bells on.

This is very true.

Given how many i have seen moan about masks, not being able to go to x, y and z, won’t test their children if school send home, ignore the guideline re meeting people etc then I imagine there will be many that won’t comply with quarantine.

Piggywaspushed · 26/07/2020 10:10

CMA forced quite a few companies already to change policies and acted when Which complained to them, so they are definitely worth it. If a high volume of complaints comes in, they can instruct companies.

lifeafter50 · 26/07/2020 10:43

the have it at the time of booking has always been viewed as a commission scam.
What a ridiculous excuse. You are always advised to but it then -you don't need to buy from the tour operator who is presumably the 'scammer' 🧐 but you should buy it from somewhere. If you don't, then you have only yourself to blame.
