Just heard this on breaking news.

From midnight tonight? Bad news for anyone who is there now and due to travel home. We were supposed to be going at the end of August and now I’m limbo about what to do!!!

OP posts:
EasterIssland · 25/07/2020 22:43

Thanks! Apparently they’ve said they won’t cancel (easyJet) in the coming days but might do for later in the month

daisymay133 · 25/07/2020 22:48

Is it a package Easter?

Mine just came thru but it’s a package

To be honest they cancelled the return flight of my holiday yesterday so I knew I could get refund for whole thing anyway but they said they couldn’t do anything until I spoke to the disruption team later in week - so was still an acfive booking. I think they would have tried to offer me a diff return flight etc but either way I knew I was entitled to refund so I relaxed about it

But just now I got email saying ‘due to fco advice’ all holidays cancelled

If you are flight only it may not be cancelled automatically but may end up cancelled by default if low numbers

My flight that was cancelled was pulled when seat bookings online looked 20% 2 weeks before if that helps so do a pseudo booking to see! If seating is low it’ll likely be pulled anyway

saltycat · 25/07/2020 22:48

I'm relieved TBH. It was going to happen someday.

Spain needs to diversify its economy stat. Far too reliant on the holiday crowd from wherever. Was never sustainable really. But hey.

daisymay133 · 25/07/2020 22:49

My return flight was active with low seats, then changed to ‘sold out’ then cancelled next day

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 25/07/2020 22:52

@timeforawine

Those saying those going are selfish etc, we will go because we will lose all the money, we booked before covid, couldn't cancel earlier as was told 'see nearer the time' insurance you can only claim within 30 days of travel if the FCO advices against travel, but now the FCO advice is ok to the Spanish islands we have no get out clause. But we will adhere to rules, we won't go out, we'll pull our daughter out of nursery earlier than planned (she starts school in September) and we'll have online groceries delivered, it's shit but we don't want to lose all that money Sad
I’d personally take the hit rather than travel currently, even more so to a place which needs quarantine after due to cases.

What do you suggest they do? They have a huge problem with unemployment already. Hmm You're relieved more people are probably going to lose their jobs?
Skiptotheloo1 · 25/07/2020 22:54

I’m due to fly to Majorca on Tuesday with tui. Has anyone heard from them yet? The phones are not open until Monday, does that mean we won’t hear until then?

saltycat · 25/07/2020 22:54

The big issue going forward is that although people may have booked flights, if it is not economical for the airline to run them, they will be cancelled.

But that's ok because you will get your flight cost back.

I think it is OK to write off 2020 now, with due respect to those who will suffer the fallout. All eggs in one basket rarely works though. Spanish Gov need to use all the EU money they will get now to diversify their economy away from Tourism.

Times change.

GabsAlot · 25/07/2020 22:57

people who are out there now are just not going to qurantine when they get back-who will pay them

in a way i dont blame them

MarshaBradyo · 25/07/2020 22:58

Many will wfh but harder if not. Trouble is most people tell their colleagues where they are going and might be a factor.

Spain is huge. The country needs to move away from a huge reliance on holiday income.

Spain will be the recipient of a large Covid grant from EU to sort themselves out, and I hope they use it wisely and there are no backhanders.

To my mind, the Gov sat back and let the holiday areas get on with it. No more. So they HAVE to have a plan that doesn't involve tourism so much if they have half a brain now.

EasterIssland · 25/07/2020 23:02

@daisymay133. No. Just flights. I’m basque so travelling to visit family.
Hope you can recover your money

daisymay133 · 25/07/2020 23:07

Easter my email says I’ll get refund ASAP - happy to wait as long as I get it 🤞😂

What will you do? Will you still go if you can?

Skip - on trip advisor people saying they’ve had emails from tui confirming cancellations as tui have always said they’d cancel holidays where there’s isolation rules

Industries takes years to build - investments, infrastructure, training and recruitment, re-investing of profits, nations can't just diversify on the proverbial dime because of bloody Covid Hmm.

Plenty of places rely and have relied on tourism as a source of income. There's nothing wrong with that, it won't change overnight because of this and may not at all long-term.

Why wouldn't the government support its own economy as it stands at present? It's what feeds people and keeps infrastructure flowing.

EasterIssland · 25/07/2020 23:09

Daisy I think I might postpone. I’ve a 2yo that goes to nurseey. I’d lose so much money by isolating him... and if something happened whilst I was there ...

TimeWastingButFun · 25/07/2020 23:12

I thought it was just a case of having a couple of weeks at home when you got back but I gather there is some advice about not going? Glad we decided to stay in the UK this year, I guess this was on the cards. Tough for those booked though 🙁

MorningManiacMusic · 25/07/2020 23:16

What a nightmare. Hope everyone gets their money back. I was going to Spain (not coastal) in two weeks. I imagine my flight will be cancelled and I'll get another voucher to add to my collection.
Spoke to friends in Spain this evening who hadn't heard about the new regulations.

saltycat · 25/07/2020 23:23

uniglo.

The problem is that the reliance on tourism in Spain is above and beyond normal economic activity in that country.

The penny will drop sooner than we think now, because those in control of all the hotels and so on are the Spanish Mafia, so they will have to diversify to survive.

Why do you think tourism is such a huge economic driver in Spain? I doubt it is because the Government idiots see it as sustainable.

But watch how the Spafia re emerges!

1dayatatime · 25/07/2020 23:32

Given that Spain is a popular holiday destination what concerns me is that there will be a large number of tourists passing through UK airports on their way home. Personally I wouldn't want to travel through any airport right now regardless of my destination.

shinynewapple2020 · 26/07/2020 00:25

@TrickyD

Do you think this Will apply to the Canary Islands too given that geographically its nowhere near mainland Spain

The Canaries are Portuguese territory not Spanish. And to the person who asked about Tenerife, that is in the Canaries so not in Spain.

No @TrickyD The Canary Islands are not Portuguese! They are Spanish . As everyone else has mentioned .
CKBJ · 26/07/2020 00:30

Does the new travel advice affect the validity of people’s travel insurance?

shinynewapple2020 · 26/07/2020 00:52

@daisymay133

Pertella

My friend booked with jet2 and asked on twitter and they said it’ll be cancelled

EasyJet also cancel if there any requirement to isolate as do tui

It’s automatic you don’t get choice

@daisymay133

So you know if the same applies to flights all places where there is quarantine ?

We are booked to go to Portugal end of September . Booked everything separate, not package . For accommodation if we cancel 2 weeks in advance we can get full refund , although we have to pay the balance in August.

We've been hoping they would drop the quarantine , and have kept saying we couldn't understand why Spain was OK for travel not Portugal. Obviously this makes it even more confusing .

Flights with Jet2.

And before I get jumped on we booked in January .

Babysharkdoodoodood · 26/07/2020 01:58

From gov.uk site, it's only mainland Spain. The islands are exempt. Booked our Ibiza holiday for October way way back in January, along with insurance.

BEANBAG765 · 26/07/2020 03:02

This is totally unenforceable.
I know a family, both doctors with their child who returned from Dubai and did not quarantine for even a day.
People are ignorant and I am shocked that as doctors they should have known better.
What do you do? Report them? To who?

Piggywaspushed · 26/07/2020 06:41

Apparently Grant Shapps is in Spain. That's karma. He is one of the two (along with Hancock) who said a couple of months ago that no one should expect o travel abroad this summer!

Guess he then became the member of the cabinet encouraged to 'open up the economy' by travelling to Spain.

Even the BBC is reporting this as the headline about quarantine this morning with a person travelling to mainland Spain bewailing not being able to get her money back. She definitely should be able to.

Not heard anything from Ryanair yet, mind...
