In the same way they knocked up all those hospitals in next to no time, why can’t they do the same with schools?

Getting them there - no social distancing with teenagers on buses

We need to decrease the social distancing to 1m and get all dc back to school. Shielding teachers and pupils of course would not be expected in but everyone else needs to get on with it now.

Who would teach? The NHS has shut down loads of regular services and redeployed staff. The schools are not only running out of space but also staff. Our yr 6 is being taught by yr 5 and yr6 teachers. If you bought back yr5 you would need to split it in half and find two more teachers. I would volunteer myself but I find it hard enough to teach three children let alone 15 and I am used to teaching (although not at schools). That's before you consider the staff who are shielding.

If they will fund it. At the moment they won’t let us even claim for extra cleaning so I’m not holding my breath.

You can use transport as a reason to keep dc off school. There’s loads of coach companies desperate for work at the moment this is a non issue.

Our council would need an additional 1000 buses/ minibuses in order to adhere to current social distancing guidelines - we are a very rural county and a lot of routes are only suitable for minibuses. The council could only get an additional 7 vehicles! Hence they are not providing transport

OP - would you be happy (or imagine anyone else would be happy) to drop a 7 year old off to a stranger at a warehouse door for their schooling?

Where would the money come from? Building 4(I think?) hospitals isn't cheap, but it's a drop in the ocean compared to the £90 billion spent on schools in a year. And those are schools that are already built. It's money that isn't possible to source when the country is likely to go into a deep recession.

It's why I'm convinced that we'll be back at school with normal sized classes no matter what in September. Because the alternatives are either to go far further into debt, or to continue not educating the country's children.

I wasnt thinking half the class in school, half the class in an alternate building because naturally that would require double the amount of teachers. I was more thinking if the space was big enough (like a conference centre size) then it could be used to house whole classes provided they were spaced out.

@iVampire You don’t keep all children off school because it’s not fair in the a small minority who are shielding.

We have 10 weeks to get these 'schools' up and running.
5 weeks of those are school holidays.

So, we've got 5 weeks to sort this out.

On 20th April the government announced measures to get laptops to disadvantaged families, to aid home learning. Schools applied for the number they needed. So far I know of NO school in my LA who has recieved a laptop. I've heard rumours of other LAs getting them, but they go centrally to the LA and then to the schools.

Not getting disadvantaged children a laptop, has taken 10 weeks.

Meanwhile businesses have been bailed out, individuals have been bailed out to the tune of millions.

There is no focus or interest from this government on education. They will lower the social distance to 1m, that will have little impact on lots of schools because of classroom size and bubble size. There are still lots of vulnerable teachers, so schools are already understaffed. We haven't got time to train teachers.

So, another question - is it OK that some children will only be taught by TAs or trainee teachers for the next year? That's not fair is it?

There is no way that a teacher could get a class of 30 to maintain 1m distancing all day, so if all children are back at school, you've got to assume there will be little to no social distancing.

It is important that this most isolated of groups is not overlooked. So what is the solution for them?

TL:DR - it will left to schools to sort this out with their community. All blame will therefore be lumped on the headteachers. This teflon government will shrug and carry on privately educating their own children.

For what it’s worth I’m actually of the opinion that schools should reopen normally after the summer hols provided things stay the way they are.

How is it going to be their teacher? Their teacher is teaching 15 children somewhere else in their bubble. These children have got to be taught by someone else. There are only a certain number of teachers.

You're surely not suggesting we do warehouse lecture style teaching for 60 seven year olds in a massive room?

How would you get all the kids there? Not everybody lives in a city. Imagine the traffic at drop-off time!

Interesting to hear others have had similar problems with laptop scheme. Just such a joke. There is no plan...nothing coming from government. No funds for all the extra hand sanitizer etc. It is a complete joke
