How many deaths do you know of?

I don’t know anyone personally who has died of this.
I know people who have tested positive. Both are nurses and both have had really mild symptoms.
I also think me and my partner had it close to lockdown starting. There are a couple of other people I know who ‘think’ they’ve had it too.
But I know no one who has died of it and don’t know anyone who knows anyone who has died of it!

Why the exclamation mark.

Granolaslice · 06/06/2020 13:15

@HappyHammy because I’m very surprised that I don’t know anyone who has died, even through someone else, due to how high the death rate is here in the UK.

Not personally as such but I work in a care home group and we have sadly lost many residents some that I knew to say hello to. Some went way to early in my opinion and still had very good quality of life which is very sad and some were extremely frail and were end of life care. We did allow family in to sit with anyone who was end of life with as many sensible precautions taken. Many of the staff have had it and some have been back in after a week or so but some have been ill for weeks. It’s a nasty disease.

Autumnchill · 06/06/2020 13:17

My friends Dad. He did have underlying health problems.

eenymeenyminyme · 06/06/2020 13:18

I know 4 people - a friend's elderly in laws who were in a care home, a friend of a friend who was in her 40s and a relative in his 60s. All in the South East.

ShouldISurrogate · 06/06/2020 13:18

I know 3 personally, and know one currently in hospital care and 2 positive cases, one nurse, one prison officer who both recovered in a week.. I’m out of a city in Scotland

IHaveBrilloHair · 06/06/2020 13:19

Personally, none.
Two if we're counting people friends know, both elderly in care homes.

WinnieWonder · 06/06/2020 13:20

Only 2. I'm in Ireland. Two friends of mine, late forties, their dads have died and both of those two men were in nursing homes.

I don't know of anybody in the general population who had it,never mind died from it.

I'm not going to take risks though. I am expecting a huge second wave when the kids go back to school and everybody's resolve weakens.

Deblou43 · 06/06/2020 13:20

Know of 1 who was in hospital after a heart attack and blood poisoning . 6 people I know had it one over weight with heArt problems , 83 year old and 4 people at work all ill for 2 weeks and fine now

CodenameVillanelle · 06/06/2020 13:20

Not people I know myself, but my friend's grandmother died in a care home and my dad's friend's husband died

gingerfreckles · 06/06/2020 13:20

My dear mother.

Bol87 · 06/06/2020 13:21

There are 67 million people in the UK, 40,000 have died. That’s 0.06% of the population. I am in no way dismissing a single death. I wish everyone hadn’t happened. It is zero comfort to their families. But that percentage is tiny. And the reason a huge amount of people won’t know anyone who has died. I know a couple but they are distant, friends of friends parents. But I worry daily for my mum who is high risk & my granny who is elderly & not overly well.. I actually only know one person who suspects she’s had it. No-one else! But cases have been low in the area I live in.

Deblou43 · 06/06/2020 13:21

Why does everyone talk about a huge second wave we have to go back to life can't stay locked in forever ..... it might not happen it has not happened in Italy or Spain

CodenameVillanelle · 06/06/2020 13:22

So sorry Gingerfreckles Flowers

Epigram · 06/06/2020 13:22

There have been 40,000 deaths in the UK out of a population of nearly 68 million. That's roughly 1 in every 2000 people. So it's not that surprising you don't know any of them.

I don't know anyone personally who has died, but I know of an ex-colleague (who left my workplace before I joined). He was mid-80s and died in a care home.

30not13 · 06/06/2020 13:22

A friend's friend died from it.

I also know (across whole of UK not just my area) 7 people who have had it (confirmed by either test or GP diagnosis)

SerendipitySunshine · 06/06/2020 13:23

Sadly, five have died, maybe 20 with positive tests. Three were older, and were my parents' friends more than mine. Two younger friends (well, in their 50/60s). One had MS but was early stages, and the other was completely healthy. I am still reeling from it, to be honest.

BrandyandBabycham · 06/06/2020 13:24

A dear family friend - he was 82 but no underlying conditions. Just the loveliest man 😢

YukoandHiro · 06/06/2020 13:25

My dad's friend's partner died. He was 42 with no underlying conditions

Lacazettes · 06/06/2020 13:25

None.

I don't even know anyone who has been confirmed to have had it.

pinkazing · 06/06/2020 13:31

DH colleague died. One of DF carers has tested positive and has no symptoms. None of the others and all family tests came back negative. I had a bug at the beginning so may have had it but may not.

Campervan69 · 06/06/2020 13:31

None.

I know two men who are in their 50s who were poorly with it to the extent they had to have oxygen in hospital for a couple of days but have now recovered. Both of them caught it in the half term holidays when they went skiing in in Italy.

Other than that I don't know anybody who's had it even their wives and families didn't seem to catch it off them.

My grandmother died of it. In a care home. Tested positive. No previous health conditions.

Bagelsandbrie · 06/06/2020 13:33

None. I don’t know any confirmed cases either (South Norfolk).
