Does anyone else think things are going to be worse than most people realise?

In terms of the global depression and the short and long term effects? From what i've been reading, I don't think this is something we have ever faced and most people think it's going to be like the 2008 recession. People keep talking about a new normal but I don't think things will ever be like they were in 2019.

@camomila - I work on a European project and follow the European press every day. I study one country but read summaries on others. I completely disagree. You need to read a lot more there are huge problems in all countries, there are even lockdown protests in law abiding germany.

cakeisalwaystheanswer · 23/05/2020 12:03

This is getting very negative so things to be cheerful about:

When Brexit is completed London is expected to return to being the biggest financial centre in the world. This is very important to our economy and we were only topped by NY because of the uncertainty B created, we are expected to return to no1 early next year.

We control our own currency. We can manipulate this for our own economic advantage. This is not possible for Euroland countries where the Euro will always support the biggest strongest economies at cost to the smaller and weaker.

We have left the EU at a time when there is pressure on the stronger economies to bail out the weaker ones. We will only have our own debts to worry about.

We can tax Amazon, Goggle etc. These companies have used EU rules to avoid tax bills by basing themselves in small EU countries, Luxembourg and Ireland respectively, and using them to their own advantage. Jeff Bezos let me introduce HMRC.

Britains small businesses. Despite everything determined business people are still selling take away pints in pubs on the sea front. Ditto lots of other businesses trying to get going again.

We are spenders. Other countries have savers. Spending will get us out of this.

We are a successful economy. We have a furlough scheme because we can afford it (eventually). Other countries can't, many Italians cannot afford food. The people still getting paid are accumulating more money than usual that eventually they will spend, because that's what we're good at.

There's loads of other stuff and mine is a but Eurocentric because of my job but lets think positive!

@oralengineer
These deaths are due to people fearing coming into hospital and catching the virus. Nothing at all to do with lockdown. My hospital have specifically requested I come in they are not locked down or preventing treatment being sought. I am not going in because I fear catching the virus. The lockdown has no bearing whatsoever why on earth would that stop me having tests that my team have asked me to have? The sole thing stopping people coming to hospital is fear of the virus.

cakeisalwaystheanswer I love that! Flowers

I read an article that likened this period to the period to where the water recedes before a tsunami - apparently people find it interesting, they stop to examine the seafloor

Good analogy.

Alsohuman · 23/05/2020 13:16

*No. The recession will be temporary.

It's not the same as earlier recessions, this one was created for a reason and employment and spending can be turned back on*

Are people really naive enough to believe this shit? This will be the fifth recession I’ve lived through. The last four were bad enough, this one will make them look like a walk in the park.

I wish I shared your optimism about Brexit, but I fear that the effects will be very negative for this country instead.

There are plenty of people writing about economics currently who take this view.

This recession was created "deliberately". It will not be the same as other recessions.

Alsohuman · 23/05/2020 14:37

It will not be the same as other recessions

No it won’t. It will be far, far worse.

cologne4711 · 23/05/2020 14:58

The feeling of superiority from UK is astounding

No, we will be fine, but have 30k deaths and haphazard instructions

And ok, nothing will stop us from Brexit either. We are the best

Stop conflating the UK with the UK government. They. Are. Not. The. Same.

cologne4711 · 23/05/2020 14:59

When Brexit is completed London is expected to return to being the biggest financial centre in the world

I don't think so somehow.

cologne4711 · 23/05/2020 15:00

As to how to prepare (NOT stockpile) check out the preppers section. Lots of great advice for all budgets

Stockpiling IS prepping.

Panic buying is not stockpiling.

onesmalldog · 23/05/2020 15:06

The original figures were way over estimated for the number of deaths and action was taken accordingly on that, false, basis. If they every thought they overreacted they can never say it, can they?
And before anyone says, that death rate is staggering lower because we locked down - NO - it really isn't.

onesmalldog · 23/05/2020 15:07

*staggeringly

80sMum · 23/05/2020 15:21

These are my opinions/views /thoughts on the matter.
Just when we get used to living with this virus, another one will emerge, then another and so on.
There are too many people on the planet, with resulting too much pressure on resources, leading to ever more intensive farming on a huge, industrial scale and the destruction of the natural environment.
It's inevitable, if the population continues to increase unabated, that disaster will strike humanity on a scale as yet unimaginable.

When I was a child, the world's population was half of what it is today. Even in my little neck of the woods I see the results of overpopulation every day - traffic; crowds; houses being built everywhere; pretty villages engulfed within vast housing estates; previously pristine wildlife reserves wrecked by overuse from too many dog-walkers, hikers and cyclists; places that were once quiet and peaceful, now thronged with visitors and noise.

The emergence of new viruses is one of the many negative consequences of our modern way of life and something that everyone will have to get used to dealing with.

VirginWestCoast · 23/05/2020 15:21

Yes I heard seven percent for Sweden too Redolent, and highest death rate per capita in the world there now
Covid Deaths per 1 million people:
Sweden: 396
France: 433
Italy: 539
UK: 536
Spain: 612
Belgium: 797

www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

I hear quite a lot of things, doesn't make them true.

ITonyah · 23/05/2020 15:52

Alsohuman I believe that you believe what you say, but you are hugely politically biased and I think that affects your conclusions. There is no doubt there will be a recession but it will be short.

Alsohuman · 23/05/2020 16:01

Touch of pot and kettle there, isn’t there? It’s not my political bias that convinces me but my experience as an adult of four previous recessions.

This recession will be global - there are already people turning up at US foodbanks in Mercs. We’re already lost 9,000 manufacturing jobs at Rolls Royce, before we even start. We’re going to have massive unemployment when furlough finishes.

It will take years for aviation to recover, same for tourism and hospitality, that’s a lot of people on universal credit. How are they going to pay their mortgages? Where’s the money going to come from to support retail? The world’s going to be a different place.

bilabongg · 23/05/2020 16:01

@ITonyah why will it be short?

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 23/05/2020 16:14

@russetbella1000 someone else shared this and it is eerily relevant

Does anyone else think things are going to be worse than most people realise?
longwayoff · 23/05/2020 16:29

Indeed ITonyah, Alsohuman is correct, this isn't going to be a little local difficulty, it won't be short, it will be like nothing you have so far experienced.

AuntyRigsby · 23/05/2020 16:29

dramadrama · 23/05/2020 16:30

maresydoats

Seems a strange accusation to make on a thread where most people are actually expressing deep concern about the UK's prospects?

longwayoff · 23/05/2020 16:31

Ohhh Grant Shapps is doing his best but bloody hell. Can't save this one. Faffing away, contradictions abound.

dramadrama · 23/05/2020 16:32

80sMum

Entirely agree. There are simply too many people. Unfortunately none of us want to volunteer to do the decent thing and reduce the population by one. Joking apart, it's a conundrum.
