Does anyone else think things are going to be worse than most people realise?

In terms of the global depression and the short and long term effects? From what i've been reading, I don't think this is something we have ever faced and most people think it's going to be like the 2008 recession. People keep talking about a new normal but I don't think things will ever be like they were in 2019.

The mental health impact scares me more than the financial one, although there is a link to both eh.

serenada · 22/05/2020 22:23

What am I missing @nellodee

Zoom out an extra level - what is there? A depression?

Also, has it gone beyond the point where recession is inevitable? Can we pull it back?

wanderings · 22/05/2020 22:25

Yep. I'm sure the lockdown will eventually go down as "the biggest state-sponsored over-reaction in history". The virus fear will probably be forgotten this time next year, but the recession resulting from the lockdown will be very much there.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 22/05/2020 22:27

i think we need to be prepared for another lockdown, there no doubt will be a second wave

AhGoGo · 22/05/2020 22:27

Yes.

Even every time I think I have a grasp on how bad it 'may' possible be I'll have a conversation, or a zoom meeting with the board of directors for my company and I'll be left processing so much more.

The job loses and business closures are going to be huge. Big names we know and small independents.

PafLeChien · 22/05/2020 22:27

It is easy to pretend it will be worst than the virus because measures have been effective.

Without any lockdown, things would have been bad to an unprecedented level. Just research the actual figures, and stay away from the ones comparing the virus over 2 months with a know disease over a YEAR. Hmm

Of course things won't be great, but pretending all it takes it to reopen the school and pretend it never happened is very unhelpful. and counter-productive.

RHTawneyonabus · 22/05/2020 22:29

Lockdown will obviously have an impact but I’m more worried about a disastrous no deal Brexit and climate change

AhGoGo · 22/05/2020 22:29

@CrowdedHouseinQuarantine

We simply can't have a second lockdown like this one, any business (especially non-essential retail, hospitality and leisure) that manages to get through this one won't survive. Lives are important but the deaths from an absolutely shattered economy matter more.

AhGoGo · 22/05/2020 22:29

*not so much more - matter as well.

Redolent · 22/05/2020 22:29

So what’s the alternative - Sweden? Whose economy is also fucked despite its mild lockdown

Smellbellina · 22/05/2020 22:29

No I think it’ll be fine.

PafLeChien · 22/05/2020 22:29

lockdown too effective: people moan it was pointless in the first place -when clearly it wasn't.
lockdown not effective enough: people screaming it should have been stricter.

Insight will be so useful for keyboard warriors in a few months

LastTrainEast · 22/05/2020 22:33

The lockdown will eventually go down as "the biggest state-sponsored over-reaction in history". Which state? You get that all of them did it right? It wasn't just some strange notion that Boris had.

greengauges · 22/05/2020 22:36

Oh this is bad all right. Some things will never return to the way they were.

CherryPavlova · 22/05/2020 22:38

I think Brexit is going to bring huge problems, both social and economic but it will be blamed on Covid19.
I think the virus isn’t going anywhere and there will be mutations.

I rather suspect our way of living will be changed for ever but not everything about that is bad.

You seem to have difficulty understanding the difference between a mild contraction (-0.3%) and a major depression (-14%)..

Newjez · 22/05/2020 22:42

I do wonder at people who seem to think there would have been no financial consequences from cv19 if there had been no lockdown.

I just struggle to understand how these people think the world would have just skipped along as normal whilst people were dying in the streets.

I'm just stumped at the stupidity of some people.

Nanalisa60 · 22/05/2020 22:44

Were all DOOMED!!

Or of course we could all just stay strong and carry on!!

nearlynermal · 22/05/2020 22:44

Yeah, I mean the public debt impact is going to be brutal. I'm worried about stagflation, not to mention tax increases. And the socioeconomic knock on effects are going to make current inequality look like a picnic. Add Brexit, and the UK is looking like a very different place. Anybody still talking about a V shaped recovery is delusional.

Redolent · 22/05/2020 22:46

@HannahStern

“ Scandinavia’s biggest economy will shrink 7 per cent this year, Finance Minister Magdalena Andersson said on Tuesday. ”

Where are you getting your figures?

GalesThisMorning · 22/05/2020 22:47

That's a good point. What an easy out Boris has when Brexit fucks us even further... he couldn't have helped it, it was this virus that came from China you see Angry

I also agree that not everything in a post Corona world will be bad. More flexibility and more people working from home will be good for the environment and good for many of us on an individual level.

GalesThisMorning · 22/05/2020 22:50

Lockdown or no lockdown many industries will suffer. The airlines, travel and tourism, entertainment and hospitality industries would have taken a huge hit no matter what.

justanotherneighinparadise · 22/05/2020 22:54

I agree that Climate change is the big one and it’s happening right now. Covid is a dry cough by comparison to the global warming pneumonia coming up behind it.

maresydoats · 22/05/2020 22:54

The feeling of superiority from UK is astounding.

No, we will be fine, but have 30k deaths and haphazard instructions.

And ok, nothing will stop us from Brexit either. We are the best.

OMFG.

Anyway I'm resigned to my fate, but will go to Ireland soon can't stand it here anymore.

Hunnybears · 22/05/2020 22:54

Absolutely. Categorically absolutely. It’s a big fat YES from me!!!

People will realise the financial implications when it’s beyond too late...... sad times ☹️
