I know there is an announcement on Sunday but I thought there had to be one today regarding lockdown? Watching the daily briefing but Boris isn't even doing it.

OP posts:

Yep kids here are out on their bikes. Posted all over local SM, lockdown is ending so who is having a VE street part tomorrow. You can’t allow the press and the PM to shoot their mouths off and it not have consequences. Both parties are irresponsible. The people we are talking about were probably to pissed to watch the briefing because is a BH tomorrow and BOJO says it’s over on Monday and the press does too. Gross irresponsibility. No wonder he’s a world wide laughing stock.

cantdothisnow1 · 07/05/2020 18:33

Goatmcgoaty no timescale was given, only that Boris would give a 'roadmap' on Sunday and that would be subject to criteria being met, though no details of what that criteria are was given, other than no increase in R.

JemimaPuddleCat · 07/05/2020 18:34

Thank you for confirming cantdo I'm looking for a transcript of the speech, but it seems they don't bother putting them all on the Gov website 🙄

bobstersmum · 07/05/2020 18:37

What's the betting that it will be a crazy Bank Holiday weekend with everyone thinking it will be announced Sunday evening that lockdown is over. In reality they will probably only adjust it slightly to let us visit family.

GrumpiestOldWoman · 07/05/2020 18:38

It'll be a bit of an anti-climax on Monday when it becomes clear the easing is only modest.

rosie1959 · 07/05/2020 18:43

You cannot legislate for stupid
All had been very clear Boris is speaking Sunday to set out the direction for the future There I suspect will be minor changes for the next 3 weeks
It cant be timed precisely that would be a ridiculous assumption

Michelleoftheresistance · 07/05/2020 18:43

Also livid with the newspapers who have been agitating constantly and throwing all kinds of irresponsible nonsense out about what may happen, what should happen.

Add that to a dithery, vague govt who said days ago they'll tell the big news on Sunday and then walk away and leave it to speculation, rumour, stupid journalists and a very stressed and anxious general public trying to make plans to cope with the situation, and yes, you can't blame the general public for now having no idea what the fuck is going on and what next week will look like, and why the leader of their country is less use than a chocolate tea pot.

I suspect it will look like the Ireland plan and not much will change on Monday. I'm reading threads and talking to people more or less believing it's back to normal on Monday. I have a business to try and work out how to save, and this crap really, really does not help. The briefing should have stamped on this crap and given some clear indications today. That they haven't leads to yet more general public wondering do they actually know? Are they waiting to see what the public wants to do and then following them, because if that's the case what's the point of them? Why does it appear the leaders of the four UK countries aren't on the same page and are all briefing differently, are they all still talking to each other and do any of them have a grip on the situation?

BreconBeBuggered · 07/05/2020 18:46

If the lockdown adjustments permit visiting of family, as far as I can see that will make precisely zero difference to the people in my neighbourhood. I've stopped stressing about it, but I find it astonishing that there's still widespread mingling of households. The government's message patently isn't getting through to everybody, and that's without irresponsible newspaper headlines whipping up excitement about pub gardens.

Devlesko · 07/05/2020 18:48

I think the message is very clear.
risk catching a deadly virus or stay at home.
I'm sure the most intellectually challenged can understand this.

MorganKitten · 07/05/2020 18:48

They have said all week it will be Sunday

Goatymcgoaty · 07/05/2020 18:52

The government have painted themselves into a corner a bit with the “protect the NHS save lives” mantra. We’ve done that. The lockdown wasn’t to save everyone, it was to save the nhs. Job done.

We now need a strong leader giving us a clear, solid reason why we need to keep staying in. Not that vaguery. They seem unable to give a clear reason why we have to continue to stay in, it’s alll ummm ummm Sunday umm ummm carry on ummm avoid another peak ummm ohhh ahhh mumble mumble nothing to see here.

It was three weeks today, the deadline. Sixty million anxious people on tenterhooks tuning in, who’s lives are on hold / being destroyed. Boris should have been there.

knittingaddict · 07/05/2020 18:55

It is perfectly clear! There's a lockdown in place - there are rules - It will remain in place until you are told otherwise.

How do some people even manage to function day to day without someone following them reminding them to breathe/eat/look before crossing the road?

I've been thinking the same Jemima.

redsky75 · 07/05/2020 19:03

How do some people even manage to function day to day without someone following them reminding them to breathe/eat/look before crossing the road?

But it's not about that...it's the tone and delivery of the message that's just as important. A message that is clear and strong will be taken far more seriously than a wishy washy 'carry on as you are doing please' type message. There needs to be no room for mis interpretation.

MissHoskins · 07/05/2020 19:05

@Itisasecret
It not a Bank Holiday tomorrow.
The bank holiday is on Monday. If that's your level of understanding then I not surprised that you haven't understood the message.

Goatymcgoaty · 07/05/2020 19:06

In the uk it’s bank holiday tomorrow

FlamingoAndJohn · 07/05/2020 19:06

I’m not defending the government in the slightest. I hold them, especially Johnson (not Boris, I don’t call him that, he’s not my friend) in the highest contempt.

I don’t get the contradiction on this thread. Saying that Raab should have made it clear but the stupid people are too stupid to watch it or too pissed.

altmum · 07/05/2020 19:07

MissHoskins, the bank holiday is Friday (tomorrow)

knittingaddict · 07/05/2020 19:11

MissHoskins the bank holiday was changed to Friday for VE day. Do you feel a bit silly now for being so rude?

OldLace · 07/05/2020 19:12

I feel really cynical about this Govt now.

I thought that the 'wait till Sunday' was to avoid people flooding out over the Bank hol weekend.
I thought that, esp after the Scottish statement at lunchtime, they would announce 3 more weeks lockdown today (as it's 'Review day') but that there may be some slight easing during that 3 weeks, details on Sunday.

I see Johnson couldnt do it as then the journos would have asked HIM the qus

But I didnt expect Raabs casual 'wait and see'.
To be treated like children.
Its almost like they want people to go out over the weekend.

dementedpixie · 07/05/2020 19:13

It is a bank holiday tomorrow for VE day

MummaGiles · 07/05/2020 19:13

@JemimaPuddleCat yes he did say that

PuppyMonkey · 07/05/2020 19:19

I have always thought of myself as quite a competent person and I usually understand simple instructions, but I was very confused about the initial briefing by Raab.

He waffled on about how well we’d done with social distancing so far. Yay, yay we protected the NHS.

He said the PM would be announcing some more news on Sunday blah blah.

Then he handed over to the scientists.

He didn’t say “we are hereby extending the lockdown until xxx date” or “we must carry on with the lockdown now and the PM will explain more on Sunday.”

It was not at all clear until one of the journalists asked a question and he was a bit snippy and said “I’ve already said the lockdown will continue” or something.

It was very woolly and unclear I thought.

Itisasecret · 07/05/2020 19:20

@MissHoskins a little bit awkward there, you’ve made yourself look a bit sill haven’t you? It is VE bank holiday tomorrow, now maybe take your own advice?

PuppyMonkey · 07/05/2020 19:21

He should probably have confirmed the bank holiday too by the sound B of it Miss H.Grin

FlyLight · 07/05/2020 19:23

PuppyMonkey I thought exactly the same- it seemed like he was rushing through it to get it over with as quickly as possible. No mention of lockdown extension until actually asked
