Am I the only deluded one clinging on to a tiny bit of hope for our July holiday?

Yeah I know it's selfish to be worried about holidays what with everything else which is going on, but I've already had to cancel one at Easter. I'm sure there are a fair few of us who can't wait to get away. We're booked to go to Spain mid July, staying in a private apartment so no shared accommodation/hotel to worry about. Spain are starting to ease restrictions. I think they are going to need tourism to start up soon as long as they can be sure it's safe.

Is anyone else still holding on to a tiny bit of hope for a summer holiday? I really can't be the only one, can I?

@chocolatesaltyballs22 we’re also due to fly to Barbados from Gatwick but in late July, with Virgin. Just a case of waiting to see what happens, our balance on the accommodation (booked directly) is due next weekend, we’ll have to pay it or risk breaching our contract. I don’t mind not going and am pretty sure we won’t be, but would like a bit of certainty!

Normalmumandwife · 09/05/2020 07:31

So the big question is that when the 14 day quarantine is imposed for arrivals into the U.K. this week, will we be refunded air fares or expected to fly out and isolate for 14 days on our return! We were flying in August with Jet2 but wasn't looking good anyway, but no way can we afford to isolate for 14 days on return

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 09/05/2020 08:54

Do we know this is happening @Normalmumandwife or is this more speculation?

OP posts:
ClashCityRocker · 09/05/2020 09:04

Government currently discussing it with airlines, according to the beeb.

It does seem on the more likely side of speculation.

I wonder how insurance will deal with situations where you can technically go on your holiday, but can't do so because you can't self-isolate for two weeks after (work and stuff)?

Cherrypie32 · 09/05/2020 09:11

Just discussing this with DH. Due to fly mid Aug to Greek island. Whilst kids and I could manage 2 weeks at home after, DH couldn’t. So if the airline is flying we wouldn’t get our money back presumably.

DBML · 09/05/2020 09:53

@chocolatesaltyballs22

Speculation at the moment. You know what it’s like with the press.

But even so, I noticed a line in the article that read something along the lines of ‘quarantine could be in place until at least July.’ Which could also mean that they would relax this over the summer holidays. Who knows right now. Crazy.

Scarlettpixie · 09/05/2020 10:00

We were supposed to be going to the U.S in august and I was sick of worrying and wondering so paid the amendment fee and changed it for a week in spain in august 2021. We will replan our US trip for 2022 all being well.

This year, I decided I didn’t want to travel and be in large crowds even if it was allowed, which still seems unlikely.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 09/05/2020 10:14

I really hope there's a bit of certainty from the announcement tomorrow. People just need to know so that they can plan accordingly. I hope Boris doesn't come out with a load of unclear waffle.

Aargh the Times re quarantine for 14 days in its Q and A bit says the measures ‘ are likely to come into force early next month and stay in place until late summer or early autumn ‘ - WTF - why not immediate ? Hmm that may well bugger up our trip to Iceland mid July as I can’t quarantine for two weeks as NHS worker .

Chewbecca · 09/05/2020 11:14

Quarantine on return seems likely only to be that you stay in your own home for 2 weeks so if you are WFH, not much change to now.

Normalmumandwife · 09/05/2020 11:59

@chocolatesaltyballs22

Govt trailing something in advance of sunday I think. Usual way of doing things. I don't think we will get money back now in flights as the airline will argue they are flying. There is no way we could do 2 weeks away and isolate to totally for another two weeks.

That's how they will keep deposits or fully paid fares.

BackInTime · 09/05/2020 12:31

The sceptic in me thinks that any decision will favour the insurers and airlines

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 09/05/2020 12:39

That also relies on other countries letting British tourists in though!

OP posts:
Normalmumandwife · 09/05/2020 13:38

Greece and Turkey will do I bet given their economy

QuimReaper · 11/05/2020 13:48

I hope Boris doesn't come out with a load of unclear waffle.

That was a considerably more deluded hope than fantasising about a summer holiday Grin

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 11/05/2020 14:25

Haha you're right @QuimReaper, how unreasonable we were to expect he would address the question of foreign travel at all! July's well and truly out the window for me now after that shit show last night.

OP posts:
fairgame84 · 11/05/2020 19:24

As Simon Calder pointed out, go where you want just make sure you come back via France to avoid quarantine.

QuimReaper · 12/05/2020 16:42

Oh no OP don't give up, your optimism was sustaining me! Grin Is it the quarantine requirement that's done it for you?

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 12/05/2020 16:46

Yeah definitely @QuimReaper - where's the fun in being confined to an apartment for 14 days in Spain, and then being confined to home when you get back? I doubt the airlines will be flying in July anyway at this rate. Still holding out hope for end of August and October though, I WILL get away this year!

OP posts:
NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 12/05/2020 16:53

"As Simon Calder pointed out, go where you want just make sure you come back via France to avoid quarantine."

You need to make sure you are flying to a country that isn't imposing 2 weeks quarantine at their end before you start the holiday too. You could actually require 6 weeks holiday from work in order to have a 2 week holiday. Shock

smogsville · 12/05/2020 16:56

What chance of France driving through Eurotunnel in August?

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 12/05/2020 16:58

What worries me is that the airlines continue to fly with the quarantine restrictions in place and then refuse to refund or reschedule flights. That would be twattish behaviour.

OP posts:
GrimDamnFanjo · 12/05/2020 16:58

Ryanair cancelled my October flights!and I've had 3 flights, 2 work related, cancelled since March.
At the moment I'm holidaying in my head...

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 12/05/2020 17:01

October?! Wow. And I thought I'd read that Ryanair were getting back to normal flight schedules soon.

I am holidaying via my Facebook memories at the minute. There's always a previous year in which I was on holiday at this time.

"The conclusion from that is it is unlikely that big, lavish international holidays are going to be possible for this summer."

www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-52632976

Honestly, could Matt Hancock be any more patronising? A foreign holiday once a year in the summer doesn’t need to be sneered at as ‘big’, ‘lavish’.. we save up for it and look forward to it all year. Fair enough if we can’t have air travel because of Coronavirus but there’s no need for him to be a dick about it as if it’s such an excessive thing to do. It’s all meaningless garble anyway- is he says it is ok to have small, carefully budgeted holidays then?

Perhaps the Minister holidays in his own local park or his garden, if he has one, every summer?Hmm
