@Tonii1985 v good point!

vanillandhoney · 04/05/2020 17:09

If it was just another 3 weeks of the same, they would be announcing it on Thursday - not Sunday.

They're doing two announcements though. One on Thursday about lockdown, and another on Sunday about the plans to ease us out of it.

He could extend lockdown AND announce a plan to ease it once the next review period is up.

Parker231 · 04/05/2020 17:19

On today’s press conference they have just announced that the death rate has to come down a lot further. The UK now has the highest number of deaths in Europe.

redtickreturn · 04/05/2020 17:22

JVT also said that the new case rate has to come down much more. It's been steady around 3.5-4K for ages. I think they want it right down to 500-1k max for track and trace to work properly don't they?

Bluewavescrashing · 04/05/2020 17:25

The only time I've ever heard BoZo speak with any conviction is just after he was discharged from hospital with covid.

I expect his address on Sunday will be bumbling and vague but hope he actually is clear and to the point.

Ilovemyhairbeingstroked · 04/05/2020 17:30

Extend locked own for a while longer , however ease 2 metre to 1 metre, allow construction workers back - Adhering to social distancing , schools to open in June for yr 10, yr 6 and reception but staggered days/ half days so class sizes are reduced .

SodaSloth · 04/05/2020 17:30

Another 3 weeks of lockdown then from 1st June some places open, not schools, not pubs, but some shops will open.. I'm bloody craving a sausage and egg muffin

PotholeParadise · 04/05/2020 17:38

People shielding on my FB report that they received new NHS letters extending their shielding period. Letters said to shield for 12 weeks from this week

vanillandhoney · 04/05/2020 17:41

allow construction workers back

They're already working - construction never stopped.

Impiz · 04/05/2020 17:47

@YouLikeTheBadOnesToo Wow, it's not about them "fobbing us off." Hmm The reason the press conference has moved from Thursday to Sunday is to allow a second tranche of of data from the ONS to be taken into account in the decision making process. The data are due to be released on Thursday.

MrsWhites · 04/05/2020 18:13

Those speaking at the daily briefings have always seemed reluctant to comment on the level of new cases/deaths before today. The fact that JVT mentioned that they need to go down a lot further is the biggest hint yet that lockdown will continue.

I think they need a few weeks to get the contact tracing testing up and running plus they will probably want to get the two May bank holidays out of the way before the reduce lockdown conditions.

Bathroom12345 · 04/05/2020 18:21

Getting really fed up with this. Postponing until Sunday and then giving another date in the future. People saying they are worried about privacy laws and stating they won’t be using the app.. Well, that’s ok then. Just carry on like this because you are worried about whether the government will track what you are doing in the future!

Is it me or is Nicola wallowing in this. Seems to love the power and who is cutting her hair I wonder?

There are others who want lockdown to continue for ever more. Some are saying that they won’t send their children back until a vaccine is found. Well good for them. Do they have unlimited amounts of money or do they want to be furloughed for ever more.

TJH130 · 04/05/2020 18:27

There should be 15 more weeks of lockdown then when the reopen increase to 5 m distancing. All small business should close and all self employed should be forced to stop. No furlough or assonance after the current scheme runs out.

Bathroom12345 · 04/05/2020 18:28

If someone is shielding and they need to stay in for another 12 weeks, it’s sad but that doesn’t mean that the rest of the country need to do the same.

I have just seen the carers looking after their families with dementia on the BBC. We have to help them, not worry about apps security or that as some are enjoying being at home being supported by furlough just don’t want it to end.

Bathroom12345 · 04/05/2020 18:29

TJH. Are you joking?.

TJH130 · 04/05/2020 18:30

We should be forcibly locked in all our houses like Wuhan were as well.

RainMustFall · 04/05/2020 18:38

No cruises for the elderly.

Presumably that means the young and middle aged are still cruising? Obviously not visiting any ports. Hmm

Bathroom12345 · 04/05/2020 18:39

TJH. You lock yourself in then. Stay there for months. However you cannot feasibly expect everyone else to do the same. Our rates are going down massively. The NHS has been protected.

Younger people it seems are at much less risk so maybe they should be allowed more freedom. Of course it’s not fair. Some of us are much much older. But these diseases don’t look at fairness. It’s just how it is.

TJH130 · 04/05/2020 18:39

Think of the children. Won’t someone please think of the children

confusedandtired99 · 04/05/2020 18:46

I think it’s clear TJH is joking

vanillandhoney · 04/05/2020 18:51

Yeah, me too. I don't think they'll ease anything until all of that is sorted. The fact that they said today that deaths need to drop significantly before things can be eased is a huge giveaway.

We're still several hundred deaths a day above Italy and Spain and they've only just started to allow people outdoors for the first time in weeks.

SophieB100 · 04/05/2020 19:33

I agree that it will be extended especially after today's briefing.

JVT is concerned about the increase in infection rate, he said we have to watch this closely. Whilst infections are increasing, they can't release any measures soon.

Also noticed how they keep talking about the weeks and months ahead.

And also the PPE, which seems to have taken a back seat whilst they focus now on the App. If a lot of businesses re-open, if we are expected to use public transport, there will have to be enough for the NHS going forward, and us.

And schools - the promised lap tops, extra WiFi etc., won't be delivered until the middle of this month earliest.

They also need to recruit a lot of people for the track and trace...I think that Nicola Sturgeon, who knows more than us, has announced the plans for Scotland, before they are announced for England on Thursday. And Scotland haven't got the added pressure of schools opening, because they finish earlier than English schools. So, addingthat huge amount of planning into the mix, I think we're looking at end of June before lockdown as it is now, is changed.

cathyandclare · 04/05/2020 19:41

But are the infections really increasing/steady, or is it just because we're testing way more now. it seems unlikely that they're increasing if the deaths are falling. We must just be picking up more mild cases.

SophieB100 · 04/05/2020 19:42

Edit: end of May, not June.

RigaBalsam · 04/05/2020 19:44

On the slides you have to look at the hospital tests not the wider community. It's in a different colour.*
