Boris’ announcement on Sunday UK

So it’s recently been announced that Boris will be on on Sunday to let us know what the next phase is etc..

What do people think realistically he is gonna allow?

Opinions!! Go...

If he extends it it is more likely to be the 3 weeks as that covers the late may b/h. They won't want to be making announcements the day before the long weekend starts.

I completely agree. They don’t want to risk the whitsun BH and Half term being a free for all.

However-I think June 1 is going to be the return to normal so expect hospitals and all the NHS workers to be hugely busy 14-21st June and the death rate to rocket Sad.

Confusedbutheyho · 04/05/2020 12:53

Why oh why are they dragging out the hypothetical lock down easing measures? It’s so unfair and draining for everyone to be kept in the dark.

SophieB100 · 04/05/2020 12:59

Nicola Sturgeon, as a previous poster mentioned, has said that it is highly unlikely that the lockdown will be lifted this Thursday, and will then be reviewed in 3 weeks, with a hopeful easing of measures. However, she said she was aware that many more people were out at the weekend, and she whilst she understands that people are getting fed up, she will extend the lockdown even further if necessary. So, 3 more weeks for Scotland, if the R goes down and stays there, a slow easing of restrictions thereafter. If the R goes up, a further lockdown.

People who want to see people etc., must realise that they are controlling the future by breaking lockdown. If a lot of people flout the extended lockdown, the lockdown will continue. If that happens, the schools will stay closed.

I expect Boris to say the same - and there's no way we will all go back to normal on June 1st. It will be a very very slow easing of some restrictions.

Surely it's better to stay in as we have been doing, than to go out in a week or so, then have a much longer lockdown, with school openings being pushed back even further?

I like the Irish approach - small steps and you only move to the next if the conditions are met.

@Msloverlover of course we wouldn't rush it we know that and I've been at home for 6 weeks only seeing my husband. We will take and have taken every single precaution but it would be so good to see my parents and in laws soon. Please don't pick holes in a comment that simply is stating I want me and my child to see family as soon as we can (safely) this is a hard enough and scary enough time to be pregnant. Thank you

septemberismyfavouritemonth · 04/05/2020 13:01

I hope he is really clear on office workers staying at home. We are all working really well from home and being in central London I do not want to be having to get public transport if people start going back to the office and then make others feel guilty for being at home. We have functioned totally business as usual with our home set up and all the tools we have avilable to us. I want to stay at home as long as possible as the thought of going on the tube is terrifying!!!

DishingOutDone · 04/05/2020 13:02

Sorry have we established its definitely Sunday and not Thursday? Or maybe its both!!!

1forsorrow · 04/05/2020 13:06

I like the Irish approach - small steps and you only move to the next if the conditions are met. If only we were as grown up as the Irish and could be trusted not to run screaming into the street the minute he says there will be an easing of lockdown. We can only wish.

Letseatgrandma · 04/05/2020 13:07

I think he has to make a decision on lockdown on Thursday but the papers are saying he’ll announce his exit plan on Sunday

Servers · 04/05/2020 13:07

He will say another 3 weeks guys, enjoy.

Zaphodsotherhead · 04/05/2020 13:07

I don't really think they should use 'people being really fed up with it' as a criterion for releasing lockdown.

However, if he just gives us some kind of guide as to how long it will be before things start to become more relaxed (without specifics because, as pp said, if people think the end is coming they will all just start living normally because 'what's a few days?'), I think people will be happier to stay locked down.

Feelinghistoric · 04/05/2020 13:09

At this point, round where I am, people are just living their lives as usual (not me) apart from going to work so we will have all the economic carnage of lockdown with none of the reduction in infection. Might as well get people back to work....

fascinated · 04/05/2020 13:12

If you want to pair up households why don’t you just do it anyway? You need to assess your risk. So, for example - at one extreme, the grandparents are very elderly with underlying conditions, perhaps with Carers who attend multiple elderly households, and the younger generation are frontline workers and thus kids still attending childcare settings and public transport is being used. Other extreme - grandparents younger, no conditions, no other exposure as no Carers and able to get shopping etc delivered. Younger generation both parents work from home, kids at home, garden so no walks or rural area so no risk from lack of social distancing on outings, again, everything delivered so no visits to supermarkets etc. Obviously the former scenario presents a bigger risk , in both directions, than the latter. People will fall somewhere on this spectrum of risk. Everyone needs to make their own risk assessment and decide what to do. What Boris says doesn’t change that....

SusieOwl4 · 04/05/2020 13:13

Just read the Daily Fail - they will tell you before it even happens .

fascinated · 04/05/2020 13:13

Feelinghistoric - other than visiting relatives as I outlined in my post, I’m not sure what else I would actually be able to do to lead my life, as everything is closed!

DominaShantotto · 04/05/2020 13:15

I predict a three point plan - because we like three points and it fits nicely on leaflets and podiums.
Lots of snappy slogans and alliteration
Churchillian-esque (in Bozo's mind) spirit
MN will melt down whatever he announces - he could announce free chocolate for all and MN would melt down over it being Cadbury not Galaxy or whatever
Possibly a move from the yellow and black "real dangerous shit" colourscheme to something more in the "mild peril" territory of mustard and teal perhaps?

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 04/05/2020 13:15

Jesus, we really are not in a proper lockdown and have far more freedom than people think. Adults in Spain have only just been let out for an hour's exercise a day.

I think we have already been too lax with our "lockdown" and it has not been particularly well adhered to generally. I don't think we are past the worst yet, in my opinion.

SleepingStandingUp · 04/05/2020 13:16

blather blather vague vague stay home blather blather protect the NHS blather blather save live blah blah blah vague start to find a new normal vague vague protect the economy blah blah we've followed the science blah blah we've done the right thing at the right time blah blah we're so awesome at this vague vague

frasersmummy · 04/05/2020 13:17

I would be immensely annoyed if restrictions were eased in England and Scotland remained locked down.

Our figures are so much lower I don't see how nicola sturgeon can justify being stricter than Boris

imsooverthisdrama · 04/05/2020 13:17

Surely it's better to stay in as we have been doing, than to go out in a week or so, then have a much longer lockdown, with school openings being pushed back even further?
I do agree with you but I feel a lot of people me included who observed the rules but now no end in sight I'm thinking how much longer .
I assumed that this week that we would be given some indication how lockdown will end . I'm assuming that it will be slowly but a little bit more would be better than nothing but now it's Sunday with possible extensions . If BJ is clear that there is some end in sight but if it's just another extension with no exit then it's definitely not going to be supported .

bellinisurge · 04/05/2020 13:17

Given that we started lockdown later Thanatos, for example, Ireland, we must finish later.
Blah blah blah social distancing, back to work,

If you want to see how a PM should do it, look at Varadkar's recent speech.

bellinisurge · 04/05/2020 13:18

Who's Thanatos? 😂😂😂

imsooverthisdrama · 04/05/2020 13:19

I don't think we are past the worst yet, in my opinion.
And where have you got that from the figures are falling the infection rate is falling so how can we not be past the worst ?

vanillandhoney · 04/05/2020 13:21

I doubt even he knows what he's going to say.

Thursday is lockdown review, Sunday is him announcing his plans for easing lockdown, which presumably means lockdown won't be eased on Thursday.

Alex50 · 04/05/2020 13:24

My work have told me, right from the beginning, I am off to the 1st June, unless something disastrous happens, that’s when I expect to go back to work, which I am more than happy to do, I can social distance and don’t have to go on public transport.
