Sorry I know it's the sun but it says the Balearics think we were too late to lockdown so may not let us holiday there.

Don't think this is an issue given that there won't really be planes taking you there.

lamplamplanp · 23/04/2020 10:07

In August? Probably right

Fair enough.
They're allowed to decide what risks are acceptable and which arent imo

Cheeseandwin5 · 23/04/2020 10:18

Most ppl in Spain are in complete lockdown, Children under 12 are still not allowed apart from emergencies.
The population are going through this pain and it would be ridiculous to allow holidaymakers to just turn up and jeopardise it all.
I would add that currently all bars and restaurants are shut and people are only allowed out for short walks.
You are not allowed to have parties in your house either, so i think even if you were allowed to enter, it wouldn't be much of a holiday anyway

awesomeaircraft · 23/04/2020 10:41

BBC article: The UK government warned about making summer plans.

I think if you book anything, you are unlikely to get any money back if things go bad.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 23/04/2020 10:45

I think a lot of countries will be reluctant to let Brits in for a while.

JustStayHome · 23/04/2020 10:50

I doubt very much that life will be back to normal and holidays taking place by then....

perniciousdot · 23/04/2020 10:54

I don't think anyone will be holidaying abroad In August tbh. Countries are going to be protecting themselves.

thejollygargler · 23/04/2020 10:58

What do you think you might do when you get there? Spain is shut. We have friends who are currently stuck there. They can go to the local supermarket. That's it. Otherwise no further than 50m from their door.

How do you think you would get there?

Sorry to be blunt, but this is the reality.

LimpidPools · 23/04/2020 10:59

Top quality source you've got there, OP.

Moving between countries without a good reason is generally frowned upon at the moment. It's not just the British who will be viewed as high risk. As is actually clear, if you can read between the lines of that garbage article.

At a guess, the people they actually plan to let in are the Germans. Who also holiday there in huge numbers and who also now have a very low rate of infection.
Whether Germany will allow them to go and then return is another question altogether. That infection rate didn't happen by accident.

YinMnBlue · 23/04/2020 11:05

Any country will do an actual risk assessment.

This isn’t some kind of xenophobic revenge, it is factually suggesting that the infection will still be active here because of our timetable and policy.

It makes sense for them to say this. Our Gvt’s state’s policy was ‘flatten the curve’... I.e let it drag on til everyone has had it it is immune, while Spain has gone for ‘total lockdown, stop everyone from catching it’.

This is non news.

TooTrueToBeGood · 23/04/2020 11:12

I think the idea of getting foreign holidays anywhere this year is pretty much a pipe dream.

ZezetteEpouseX · 23/04/2020 11:12

When their own citizens are on actual lockdown - unlike the very chilled out one in the UK - why would you think tourists would get a special status? 🤦

YesThatIsMyRealName · 23/04/2020 11:17

Fair enough.

If they are sensible, all countries will do the same, and the ones that don't will see massive surges in new cases.

Why should they suffer a much more severe lockdown than the UK just to have holidaying Brits get everyone sick again?

lamplamplamp · 23/04/2020 11:18

When their own citizens are on actual lockdown - unlike the very chilled out one in the UK - why would you think tourists would get a special status? 🤦

They probably won't be in August. They will let other countries in. So some of the answers don't make sense.

Devlesko · 23/04/2020 11:18

I don't blame them, there's a pandemic.
I don't think we should be allowing flights here without quarantine, seems other countries have leaders with an inkling of sense.
We must be the laughing stock of the world.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 23/04/2020 11:19

I’m currently in Spain under lockdown and people are certainly not allowed to go out for short walks. If you have a dog and no garden you can go 50m from your front door for it to do the necessary. They’ve just extended it to May 9th and for the first time in six weeks people are going to be allowed to take younger children out for a short walk next week.

We look at the UK lockdown and we cannot believe it in comparison.

DishingOutDone · 23/04/2020 11:19

Why would anyone think they can go on holiday in August?

helpfulperson · 23/04/2020 11:22

If children aren't allowed out in Spain, how do single parents shop? This is always the objection when shops try and stop families going shopping.

mumwon · 23/04/2020 11:23

& your insurance???

WhyCantIthinkOfAgoodOne · 23/04/2020 11:24

It's just the sun being hysterical and anti European. In reality no one's flying anywhere soon anyway and when they do I'm sure there will be tighter restrictions on countries which don't have a good control of the pandemic so that might include us if we don't up our game.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 23/04/2020 11:24

Look none of us are going to be off on jollies abroad this year, ain’t going to happen

Do some people really believe the world is going back to normal shortly and they can sit on a packed beach in Spain and then go have a glass of cava in a packed bar?

ArnoldBee · 23/04/2020 11:26

The canaries are shut until October for everyone.

Buxbaum · 23/04/2020 11:27

I have family in Italy and Switzerland who expect to be able to travel within the Schengen zone by late summer, but I don't think we'll be able to travel to see them from the UK for a while yet.
