Sorry I know it's the sun but it says the Balearics think we were too late to lockdown so may not let us holiday there.

I agree that foreign holidays in 2020 are a write-off, and I'm not one of the doom and gloom speculators.

If we could get ourselves to a point where we can move freely within the UK until we have a vaccine or effective treatment, I feel like not being able to travel abroad would be a price I'd be willing to pay.

I'd really, really like to be able to make it to our family holiday in the Norfolk Broads in October though!

cdtaylornats · 23/04/2020 12:03

it is factually suggesting that the infection will still be active here because of our timetable and policy

It isn't - like everyone else it is extrapolating based on its own model. Not facts just ideas

lamplamplamp · 23/04/2020 12:04

Some threads say we are over reacting and lock down should released others the opposite.

Can't keep up. No wonder Mumsnet madness exists

AnneOfCloves · 23/04/2020 12:05

I'm surprised anyone thinks there will be foreign holidays at all this year.

nuttymomma · 23/04/2020 12:07

We have a holiday booked in July, a cruise funnily enough. I don't see us going on it and even if we were allowed to travel, I'd seek a change from a cruise to a landbased holiday.

I really want a holiday though!

DH has a work trip to Italy in September and seems to think it will still go ahead. Its the north of Italy too.

When will be told for sure what is happening as summer is fast approaching!

ravenmum · 23/04/2020 12:10

Some threads say we are over reacting and lock down should released others the opposite.
Lockdown being enforced and normal life resuming are two ends of a very, very broad spectrum of possible measures to stop people falling ill all at once.
When lockdown ends, life is not going to be like it was in January.

GivenchyDahhling · 23/04/2020 12:11

@ravenmum

What’s your source for saying France is shut for everyone until October 30th? I haven’t seen this, and have family living there.

Rottnest · 23/04/2020 12:16

Is this a joke?

The state I live in AUS has closed its borders to all but essential workers, the borders will be closed for the foreseeable future, at least the next six months or so.

We are in level 3 shutdown, and the majority of people accept this.
However I do realise the situation in Aus is far better than the UK, because our political leaders, state and federal took action much sooner in the situation than Boris Johnson did.
Please correct me if I am wrong, but I think Boris Johnson only took action when he was forced to do so.
Given the number of deaths in UK at present and the reported shortage of equipment I do not think I would like to accept tourists from Britain at the moment. I intend no insult saying. It is just fact.
I cannot see this pandemic being over and done with by August.
I have an international trip booked/paid for this May, and I just have to accept it cannot take place until May 2021. That's how it is, unfortunately.

pointythings · 23/04/2020 12:16

We were supposed to be going to Greece late August - fully paid, not just a deposit. I'm regarding that money as lost. If we get a refund voucher I'll see what happens and whether it's possible to go next year. If not, it's a write off. Hard but true.

bananaskinsnomnom · 23/04/2020 12:17

I think most people with common sense have sussed that holidays in June July and August, overseas or in the uk, won’t be happening.

I think most people have come to accept that a September holiday is most unlikely too, especially overseas.

Holidays October onwards - I know people who have rearranged their Easter Break holiday for the October Half Term. That was the optimist Hope at the start of March that it will have “blown over” by then. I have a holiday booked for late October, that was booked way before this all began.

I think a lot of people are hopeful to get away at the end of the year. I’ve lost most of my Hope now but am still planning my holiday, at least then if it’s moved I still know what I want to do. The think a lot of restrictions will be lifted by then, but ultimately it will cause another wave of some sorts.

I would be interested to know the rights we will have if the borders are open, and holidays are allowed to happen but ee don’t want to go anymore. The thought of being on a plane this year doesn’t appeal to me right now. But would they let us cancel and get money back if travel is back to normal? People won’t want to loose their money. I also don’t want to loose my life and put others at risk!

fivesecondrule · 23/04/2020 12:20

There's a huge difference between getting children back to school, opening a few more essential shops (shoes, DIY, gardening centres etc), starting up manufacturing, service businesses resuming, whilst maintaining social distancing to 12 flights of holiday passengers leaving a small regional airport (i.e squashed through security and departure hall), sitting with 200 other people in a metal tube for 3/4 hours+ and then spreading whatever we've got into that country and likewise mixing with other international holidaymakers.

Krong · 23/04/2020 12:21

The latest I heard is that Spain don't plan to open restaurants or bars til November/December 2020. So even if you do go, you won't have a great time.

ravenmum · 23/04/2020 12:21

@GivenchyDahhling The radio, sorry - but looking on the German government website, it says that at least until the end of October there are strict controls with long waiting times, especially from the UK - rather than them being totally shut. But you need various "attestations" to get through (e.g. proof that you are going through France on your way to work or to get to your native country). I don't know if you would get one for going on holiday?

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 23/04/2020 12:24

What others have said really

I very much doubt any foreign holidays will be available for some time to come . Not sure about UK hotels and sites holiday rentals, but I suspect they will not have a good Summer either really

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 23/04/2020 12:26

If children aren’t allowed out in Spain, how do single parents shop? Single parents are allowed to take their children with them, as are parents who have nobody to leave the children with if they are too young to eb left.

Derbygerbil · 23/04/2020 12:36

yeah mum says we're still going to Turkey because there are no cases there

No cases.... apart from the 98,674 confirmed cases and 2,374 deaths Hmm

angelsonbareskin · 23/04/2020 12:36

So how do business survive?

Derbygerbil · 23/04/2020 12:38

And even if Turkey didn’t have any cases, why the hell would they be happy to let people in from the UK, and start an outbreak! Some people have no clue!

Changednamesorry · 23/04/2020 12:38

Exactly as @OrangeBlossomsinthesun said. Single parents may take their children with them if they have no alternative.

In terms of your holiday, OP, as a resident of Spain under serious lockdown I beg you to cancel it. We have had a very hard time anf the last thing we need is people coming from countries with what we here mostly perceive as an irresponsibly light lockdown flocking here again. Please wait until the risk has genuinely subsided..... That won't be this summer
Please.
I don't want to have to do this again come September.

IMO everyone should go on holidays in their own country this year. Minimizes local risk snd boosts local economy.

thejollygargler · 23/04/2020 12:39

@ravenmum

Please can you post a link to the source for this information.
I live in France and haven't seen this in any of the official statements.

LilacTree1 · 23/04/2020 12:39

Angels they don’t.

notimagain · 23/04/2020 12:41

What’s your source for saying France is shut for everyone until October 30th?

That raised my eyebrows as well..but France is perhaps a good example of how seriously some countries are taking this.

ATM you shouldn' leave the house in France without an attestation (paper or on a app) saying why you are travelling (e.g; essential shopping, exercise)..

You can't enter France without another attestation ( "deplacement international") and supporting documentation giving good reason for entry - e.g; French resident, essential worker.

Release from confinement starts 11th May but it's limited and there may well be continued restrictions on travel between the French Regions..restoration of inter regional travel will be aimed at Inter city travel, rather than between for example Paris and the Normandy beaches..

I think allowing foreign holiday makers to enter appears to be well down the French list of priorities and I'm guessing Spain will be similar.

goldfinchfan · 23/04/2020 12:43

I hope that domestic holidays are also cancelled.
If you live by the sea and usually get 6x the number of tourists to residents then we don't want or need this.
Our one local shop won't cope.
Our medical resources won't cope and it will be impossible to do the social distancing.
Tourism could in theory wipe out an entire village.

ravenmum · 23/04/2020 12:43

Deaths per million of population:
Spain 474
UK 267

Did Spain start the lockdown late too, or is the high figure (higher than Italy) just because people have been dying for longer than the UK?

DBML · 23/04/2020 12:45

Airlines and airports have been looking at ways to maintain social distancing once lockdown has been relaxed.

Places like Florida are looking at ways to ‘open up’ for the summer, as they rely on the millions of pounds tourism (the main industry) brings to the economy.

ABTA has criticised the minister who said not to book summer holidays and implied that many, many people’s jobs are on the line.

I don’t think for a second that international travel will stop until a vaccine is found. A vaccine might never be found. In fact, I think international travel will resume a lot faster than some people here will feel comfortable with.

As for whether or not countries will accept us, that will depend on the numbers. They aren’t going to deny Brits entry if numbers are under control and testing and tracing is underway. They aren’t going to say, “well we’ll punish you anyway because you didn’t lock down fast enough and your numbers went high at one point”. They are also going to have to consider their own economies.

Our country talks about possible social distancing for the rest of the year. This doesn’t necessarily mean no travel. Additionally if you can get abroad, UK guidelines won’t even matter as you’ll take on the host countries rules.

I am not sure about travel this summer. Part of me thinks ‘no chance’ and the other part wonders whether by late July, we’ll be in a slightly different position.
I do know though, that if I can go, I will go, so I’ll live in hope and see what happens.

Lots of people are quick to say ‘Holidays abroad won’t be happening until x, y, z’...but at the end of the day they don’t know. No one knows.
