Sorry I know it's the sun but it says the Balearics think we were too late to lockdown so may not let us holiday there.

Having seen the footage of how some tourists were behaving there about a month ago, rampaging, boozing and abusing the police whilst private citizens were on lockdown, I wouldn’t blame them if they banned British tourists forever.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 23/04/2020 11:31

@Helpfulperson

If children aren’t allowed out in Spain, how do single parents shop?

It’s their problem, end of , someone will just have to help them. There’s certainly no debate and no discussion. The fines for noncompliance are very, very high and prison awaits serious offenders.

donquixotedelamancha · 23/04/2020 11:31

Presumably if places with no Covid 19 do open to travellers it will be from countries with no outbreak.

Given we have one of the largest outbreaks in the world I can't imagine anyone wanting to open to large scale flights from the UK for a year or so.

GoofyLuce · 23/04/2020 11:32

I don't think anyone should be going on holiday this year!

Booboostwo · 23/04/2020 11:34

It is extremely unrealistic to think that anyone will be travelllng for pleasure anywhere until a vaccine has been widely distributed and has shown to create herd immunity.

What is likely to happen is that people will be able to travel with the EU for permanent reasons, e.g. relocation, if they are willing to do a 14 quarantine, and some people will be able to travel for work but that’s about it.

If there is an immunity test and it is shown that immunity lasts, people with immunity passports may be able to travel more, but that’s a lot of ifs .

YesThatIsMyRealName · 23/04/2020 11:34

"Presumably if places with no Covid 19 do open to travellers it will be from countries with no outbreak."

I really hope this is the case. We're in Korea and they are doing a 14 day quarantine for everyone visiting. Cases are down to single figures now and I REALLY hope we can just get on with normal life in a couple of weeks time. This has been going on since January for us and I just want to be able to go out to a cafe or to the park without worrying too much.

mindutopia · 23/04/2020 11:38

The FCO has advised that there should be no international travel planned indefinitely. My employer will not allow us to book any travel before the 1st of August, when they'll review their decision for the next few months after that. To be honest, I don't even had plans to go to the office before July at the very earliest, so I can't imagine going on holiday in August.

SleepingStandingUp · 23/04/2020 11:39

I guess OP was hoping it would be fine in 4 months, all those saying "no one can leave the house, what would you even DO?" - its unlikely to be like that in August.

However OP realistically WHY would other countries let us in even if we're letting people out by then when we've handled this so badly and we're likely to still be the dirty kid in the corner even if our deaths are lower than now. I'd start looking at cancelling and getting your money back.

ladybee28 · 23/04/2020 11:40

@helpfulperson they book online delivery slots, or call on neighbours and volunteers for help.

RainMustFall · 23/04/2020 11:40

It seems reasonable. I hope the UK will also ban holidaymakers until this thing has been dealt with.

fivesecondrule · 23/04/2020 11:42

I had to laugh at my DDs friend the other day. We have cancelled a holiday to the US in August- she was telling her friend over FaceTime. She replied "yeah mum says we're still going to Turkey because there are no cases there". Why the hell would they want loads of Brits turning then.

YesThatIsMyRealName · 23/04/2020 11:42

@SleepingStandingUp I think it's unlikely that normal foreign travel will be possible by August.

WhyCantIthinkOfAgoodOne · 23/04/2020 11:43

@ fivesecondrule

It seems to be a theme that people understand that people from China might be denied entry but us Brits? Surely not!

vanillandhoney · 23/04/2020 11:45

I very much doubt foreign travel will go back to normal any time soon.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 23/04/2020 11:45

Going on holidays abroad is not a natural right or entitlement.
And no place on earth wants to import illnesses or more illness (think about how the UK managed to put an end to rabies.)

ravenmum · 23/04/2020 11:45

France is shut for everyone until October 30, so you won't be able to drive there. The EU's Ursula von der Leyen has said no-one should be planning anything abroad for July or August, but that it might be possible to have domestic holidays by then, as long as social distancing is possible.

poppym12 · 23/04/2020 11:47

Did you not see the British tourists flouting the lockdown? Have you seen how strict the lockdown is in Spain?

I spend a lot of time on a Spanish island and am itching to get there but realistically, I won't be visiting for quite some time.

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/04/2020 11:48

I'm not at all surprised but I wonder when Jet2 will contact us to tell us this as two days ago we had an email assuming everything was fine and we'd be going at the end of June.

HairyFloppins · 23/04/2020 11:49

I can't imagine any country wanting plane loads of infected Brits turning up. Some people's behaviour in Benidorm was abhorrent when Spain went into lockdown. These are the type of people the UK government have to deal with and need to speak to them like children, e.g wash your hands. We couldn't lock down early as they wouldn't have understood. I am embarrassed to be British as times.

UK will be open for holidays I would imagine. Anyone can come here.

ravenmum · 23/04/2020 11:50

yeah mum says we're still going to Turkey because there are no cases there
Wonder where she heard that? Turkey is badly hit. Just saw the news from Istanbul yesterday and felt bad for the lovely people at the hotel we stayed at last year.

chocolatviennois · 23/04/2020 11:51

On the one hand governments are indicating people will not be able to travel in school summer holidays this year. On the other hand travel companies are requesting final balances and if you don't pay you loose your deposit. I booked my summer 2020 holiday last year as did 1000s of others I'd imagine. If governments want to restrict travel they need to address this issue.

ravenmum · 23/04/2020 11:56

If governments want to restrict travel they need to address this issue.
Germany has just started on this; the government are talking about vouchers being issued.

Blankscreen · 23/04/2020 11:58

Surely nobody still thinks we will be going on summer holidays abroad this year?

If we are v. lucky we might be able to go to our local seaside to sit on the beach with our own family unit.

StrangeLookingParasite · 23/04/2020 11:59

Having seen the footage of how some tourists were behaving there about a month ago, rampaging, boozing and abusing the police whilst private citizens were on lockdown, I wouldn’t blame them if they banned British tourists forever.

This exactly.

fivesecondrule · 23/04/2020 12:00

@ravenmum goodness knows they're not exactly the brightest family.
