Sorry I know it's the sun but it says the Balearics think we were too late to lockdown so may not let us holiday there.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I think Boris Johnson only took action when he was forced to do so.

People weren't complying with the earlier/lighter restrictions so he had to act. He'd already implemented social distancing, he'd been telling people to wash their hands, practice good hygiene, reduce travel, catch coughs/sneezes, etc. He told the likes of cafes, clubs and pubs to either practice social distancing or close.

People ignored him and just arrogantly carried on as normal. Pubs, clubs, cafes, restaurants, etc ignored him, hence why he had to close them down at a moment's notice on that Friday evening. Even that Friday afternoon, a local restaurant said it was business as normal for the Mother's day weekend. Our village pub plastered all over Facebook he was open as usual on Thursday and Friday - BOTH after they were told to social distance or close.

Same with holidays, idiots were still flying out of the UK for holidays, hen parties, etc., when it was clear the virus was out of control. What were they thinking?

Boris tried to do it the voluntary way, but the people ignored him. He was right to give people the opportunity to "self police" their social interactions, and he hoped most would do the right thing. That's why there was a very slight delay in the official binding lockdown. It's not as if he wasn't doing anything at all - voluntary restrictions/advice was being put in place day by day before that.

@ravenmum

Can you give us the source for your info about October please.

lamplamplamp · 23/04/2020 12:50

There's a huge difference between getting children back to school, opening a few more essential shops (shoes, DIY, gardening centres etc), starting up manufacturing, service businesses resuming, whilst maintaining social distancing

Social distancing in schools. Good oneHmm

Kazzyhoward · 23/04/2020 12:51

Airlines and airports have been looking at ways to maintain social distancing once lockdown has been relaxed.

Anyone who has suffered the Manchester Airport security area will know that's not going to happen there, especially the ridiculously tiny and poorly laid out terminal 3. They never have all the xray machines/lanes fully open at the busiest of times, so if there are fewer passengers, they'll just reduce the number of lanes/staff and the queues/congestion will be just as bad.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 23/04/2020 12:51

Spain currently has significantly more deaths per million of the population than the UK so travelling there wouldn’t seem like a great idea.

I think Angela Merkel explained how precarious relaxing the lockdown is very clearly
metro.co.uk/2020/04/16/angela-merkel-explains-coronavirus-infection-risk-anyone-can-understand-12566585/

I don’t think holidays will be happening for anyone in the Summer.

ravenmum · 23/04/2020 12:52

@thejollygargler - see my post above at 12:21:34

MaterMetella · 23/04/2020 12:53

Also curious to hear any official information about France/October. We have relatives there and a place ourselves - I haven’t heard anything about this in official statements.

Branster · 23/04/2020 12:55

There will be no LEISURE travel for the rest of the year and lots of business will go bust in most countries. As simple as that.
Maybe countries with similar approaches to this pandemic would have some agreements between themselves if they can line up their protocols.
What sane person would consider going on holiday this year?
Insurance companies, airlines and travel companies cannot sort themselves out in terms of refunds so people just have to accept they might not get all or any of their money back from pre-booked holidays. Maybe some vouchers which would be worthless if the issuing company goes under in the interim.
It really is that simple. People need to stop day dreaming. We will not go back to how it was until an effective treatment programme is implemented worldwide.
Yes I’d consider going to Norway or Iceland or South Korea in 6 months time but why would they even consider me? What if I was to come from a country where reporting is unreliable and proof of health can be easily falsified?
Business travel arrangements will take priority and even that will be difficult to manage and monitor.

Kazzyhoward · 23/04/2020 12:57

Social distancing in schools. Good one

Lateral thinking needed. Our village primary school headmaster is already talking to the parish council and churches about putting some classes in the village halls so he can spread the children out rather than having them all on the main site. He thinks there's potential for 4 of the 10 classes to be taught offsite in these halls, to spread out the children and stop excessive mixing at lunches and breaks. There's also a fifth potential room being the village library which is currently closed which already has movable shelving that moves to the sides to allow for the central area to be used for meetings/performances, etc., but the county council won't engage with him, so that looks unlikely at the moment.

DBML · 23/04/2020 12:58

Anyone who has suffered the Manchester Airport security area will know that's not going to happen

When the alternative is for many people to lose their jobs and this in turn impacting on the economy, I would put money on a way being found. Even if it’s masks handed out; hand wash stations everywhere and 2m markers taped to the floor.

TheClitterati · 23/04/2020 12:59

Good on Spain.

contrast with the UK who are allowing thousands to enter UK every day without any checks of controls re corona virus!

DBML · 23/04/2020 13:01

@Branster

You say that with such certainty. How do you know?

I’m not saying you’re wrong...but you might not be right.

Huge job losses (airports/airlines/travel agencies inc online, etc) will have a massive impact on the economy. Think of all of those people claiming benefits.

And then what if they don’t find a vaccine that works.

As much as you might think it’s daft, it may end up more likely that international leisure travel will go ahead, without a vaccine.

ravenmum · 23/04/2020 13:02

A couple of English articles on French borders. I'd heard it like this first one, in the context of foreign travel - but when you look at the details it just says "strict controls" without saying what that means.
I would guess the details might change anyway.
www.express.co.uk/travel/articles/1268469/holidays-2020-coronavirus-summer-holiday-europe-eu-european-commission-warning-news-latest
These are the current restrictions, I was assuming that these were the ones being extended:

thejollygargler · 23/04/2020 13:05

Sorry, I missed that post, but I am not sure that the German government website is a definitive source of information for what is going to happen in France.

We already have to carry official attestations to leave the house. Things are changing all the time and we have not yet had clarification of what will change after May 11 when our lockdown will begin to be eased.

Nothing has been said here in France about the ocuntry being closed until October, but I am happy to be corrected.

Could you link to the page please.

thejollygargler · 23/04/2020 13:07

Oh dear Blush country obviously!

Redwinestillfine · 23/04/2020 13:07

I don't even think we'll be on our UK holiday this year. I shouldn't imagine you'll get a plane to Spain.

thejollygargler · 23/04/2020 13:10

Well we x-posted but neither of the articles you have linked to above say that France is closed until October.

Hairyfairy78 · 23/04/2020 13:10

Would people still take the risk of the insurance companies won’t cover treatment for Covid whilst abroad? The costs could be astronomical if you need that and don’t have cover. Is it worth it for a week in the sun?

Seems Brits are obsessed with holidays abroad whatever the danger and risk.

puffinandkoala · 23/04/2020 13:12

I don't think you can say the UK's lockdown is too light as we don't know enough yet, and many other countries have taken a similar approach to us.

However, I can't see overseas holidays happening in August unless you have time to do two weeks quarantine, have your holiday and then potentially do quarantine at this end too.

contrast with the UK who are allowing thousands to enter UK every day without any checks of controls re corona virus This is not true. How many times? 95% of planes are grounded. Those that are coming in are bringing home British citizens who were stranded overseas (in some form of lockdown) and essential workers. And once here they have to comply with our lockdown. Yes they could go to the supermarket but if you have symptoms you are supposed to stay at home and even if they were tested on arrival, that only picks up those who have the virus on arrival, not those who develop it afterwards. I do wish people would stop harping on about the flights. They are bringing in a trickle of people and the risks are tiny.

DBML · 23/04/2020 13:13

@Hairyfairy78

Some insurance companies are not covering cancellation of holidays due to covid, but will pay out if medical treatment is needed.

MissHoskins · 23/04/2020 13:18

I'm surprised at those insisting that Spain and Italy won't accept Brits because of the late lockdown and people flouting the order to stay at home.
Yes, Spain and Italy did really well with forced lockdown didn't they?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 23/04/2020 13:21

@thejollygargler
If you look at the EU site I have linked above France appears to be suspending Schengen until end of Oct.

Littlegoth · 23/04/2020 13:22

My relatives live in Mallorca. They are in lockdown and the tourist industry is dead.

Holidays to the Balearics are unlikely this year.

GabsAlot · 23/04/2020 13:23

I'm meant to be goin to america in november as much as i think trump cant wait to open up again its all down to each individual state and im not sure they'll be welcoming us in
