That's a relief to hear Lilac
Incredibly worrying about the EOL drugs. We used to be one of the largest exporters of opium (for medicinal use). Are we still?.Would that help at all? Could we use some of that to make morphine?

woodencoffeetable · 17/04/2020 14:17

wrt mobile phone tracking - that's how transport companies measure how crowded trains are.
they only need the phone looking for a wifi signal for that, no phone number needed.

The letter to the shielding group makes it crystal clear that it is guidelines and you can choose to ignore it. It even gives an example of someone terminally ill who might decide with good reason to ignore it.
If you are in the shielded group you have to follow the same rules as everyone else, everything else is a guideline to keep you safe. Follow it or ignore it as you choose.

alloutoffucks · 17/04/2020 14:24

And I agree that the relaxation of the vulnerable group was simply because there were too many people in it. It is clear from the evidence in other countries that having hypertension and/or diabetes makes you vulnerable to dying from this. The original vulnerable group is probably far more accurate and includes pregnant women. The shielded group is much narrower although I still think it is going to end up being more people that the government anticipated given I know quite a few people in it including children. A few were no surprise such as my friend with cancer, but some were a total shock as I had no idea they had any health problems.

SkaraBrae · 17/04/2020 14:36

I have a question about the South Koreans re-testing positive after having been previously cleared.
Are they symptomatic ie sick all over again, or just testing positive?

mrshoho · 17/04/2020 14:37

oh yes I know it's guidance I was more thinking about how this information could be used in the future. Like I say too much time on my hands!

I agree with the incompetence thought also.

LilacTree1 · 17/04/2020 14:39

mrshoho - it’s a perfectly logical way to think. Data is worth billions.

The only thing that does make me laugh is that face masks won’t help with facial recognition tech, which may factor into government reluctance to suggest them.

I didn't know if I should put this here because I don't want to be seen as a conspiracy scaremonger, (so much so that I have nc) but I found this and need to know: is this garbage? I know it has been said elsewhere, but this Luc Montagnier is the big guns, and should know?

Contrary to the narrative that is being pushed by the mainstream that Covid 19 was the result of a natural mutation and that it was transmitted to humans from bats via pangolins, Dr Luc Montagnier the man who discovered the HIV virus back in 1983 disagrees and is saying that the virus was man made.

Professor Luc Montagnier, 2008 Nobel Prize winner for Medicine, claims that SARS-CoV-2 is a manipulated virus that was accidentally released from a laboratory in Wuhan, China. Chinese researchers are said to have used coronaviruses in their work to develop an AIDS vaccine. HIV DNA fragments are believed to have been found in the SARS-CoV-2 genome.

We knew that the Chinese version of how the coronavirus emerged was increasingly under attack, but here’s a thesis that tells a completely different story about the Covid-19 pandemic, which is already responsible for more than 110,000 deaths worldwide. According to Professor Luc Montagnier, winner of the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2008 for “discovering” HIV as the cause of the AIDS epidemic together with Françoise Barré-Sinoussi, the SARS-CoV-2 is a virus that was manipulated and accidentally released from a laboratory in Wuhan, China, in the last quarter of 2019. According to Professor Montagnier, this laboratory, known for its work on coronoviruses, tried to use one of these viruses as a vector for HIV in the search for an AIDS vaccine.

“With my colleague, bio-mathematician Jean-Claude Perez, we carefully analyzed the description of the genome of this RNA virus,” explains Luc Montagnier, interviewed by Dr Jean-François Lemoine for the daily podcast at Pourquoi Docteur, adding that others have already explored this avenue: Indian researchers have already tried to publish the results of the analyses that showed that this coronavirus genome contained sequences of another virus, … the HIV virus (AIDS virus), but they were forced to withdraw their findings as the pressure from the mainstream was too great.

According to the 2008 Nobel Prize for Medicine, a plausible explanation would be an accident in the Wuhan laboratory. He also added that the purpose of this work was the search for an AIDS vaccine. In any case, this thesis, defended by Professor Luc Montagnier, has a positive turn. According to him, the altered elements of this virus are eliminated as it spreads: “Nature does not accept any molecular tinkering, it will eliminate these unnatural changes and even if nothing is done, things will get better, but unfortunately after many deaths.” Luc Montagnier added that with the help of interfering waves, we could eliminate these sequences and as a result stop the pandemic.

This is enough to feed some heated debates. So much so that Professor Montagnier’s statements could also place him in the category of “conspiracy theorists”: “Conspirators are the opposite camp, hiding the truth,” he replies, without wanting to accuse anyone, but hoping that the Chinese will admit to what he believes happened in their laboratory.

To entice a confession from the Chinese he used the example of Iran which after taking full responsibility for accidentally hitting a Ukrainian plane was able to earn the respect of the global community. Hopefully the Chinese will do the right thing he adds. “In any case, the truth always comes out, it is up to the Chinese government to take responsibility.”

I think we will find out in the future where it came from. I remember the same allegations being made about the HIV virus at the height of public fear around that. It may have come from a lab, but I am wary about it because zoonotic transmissions happen all the time. I think lots of people just don't like the glimpse this gives of how chaotic and uncertain our world really is.
We are encouraged in the west to think we have total control of our destinies, and that simply is not the case. So seeing this as an action by humans is I think easier for a lot of people in the west to psychologically accept, than accepting how chaotic life can be. And not for any real reason except that is how things are.

buttermilkwaffles · 17/04/2020 15:33

Preliminary and based on small sample size, but "Serology testing from Wuhan indicates only 2-3% have antibody among 8,600 hospital workers and visitors, with much more testing in the works."

I was saying from the beginning that making policies like herd immunity based on assumptions that were unproven was a massive gamble. Too much is still unknown.

DifferentPosterName · 17/04/2020 15:59

It's just that it makes sense, in view of China's involvement in Africa, and Africa's AIDS issues.

According to the 2008 Nobel Prize for Medicine, a plausible explanation would be an accident in the Wuhan laboratory. He also added that the purpose of this work was the search for an AIDS vaccine

I mean it makes sense that China would be trying for an AIDS vaccine. And since the world IS chaotic and uncertain, that they then messed up.

iWantKoalas · 17/04/2020 16:03

DifferentPosterName his friend Perez's research paper just saying it is very suspect that there are several HIV insertions. Well it is.

WhyNotMe40 · 17/04/2020 16:06

If it has HIV like bits, does that mean it may hide in the body undetected and cause immune problems years down the line???!!

From the Telegraph

Chancellor extends furlough scheme to June

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has extended the government's furlough scheme for a further month, as the coronavirus lockdown rumbles on.

Following the decision to extend the social distancing measures for a minimum of three weeks, the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) will run until the end of June.

The scheme, which allows firms to furlough employees with the government paying cash grants of 80 per cent of their wages up to a maximum of £2,500, was originally open for three months and backdated from the 1 March to the end of May.

Mr Sunak, said: " With the extension of the coronavirus lockdown measures yesterday, it is the right decision to extend the furlough scheme for a month to the end of June to provide clarity.

“It is vital for people’s livelihoods that the UK economy gets up and running again when it is safe to do so, and I will continue to review the scheme so it is supporting our recovery.”

Guardian exclusive:

The government is preparing to ask doctors and nurses to work without full-length gowns when treating Covid-19 patients, as hospitals across England are set to run out of supplies within hours, the Guardian has learned.

The guidance will be a reversal of Public Health England (PHE) guidelines stipulating that full-length waterproof surgical gowns, designed to stop coronavirus droplets getting into someone’s mouth or nose, should be worn for all high-risk hospital procedures.

In a significant U-turn, PHE is set to advise frontline staff to wear a flimsy plastic apron when gowns have run out, in a move that doctors and nurses fear may lead to more of them contracting the virus and ultimately put lives at risk.

iWantKoalas · 17/04/2020 17:34

WhyNotMe40 Not a doctor but think it's saying the virus can change metabolism to ketosis and that patients testing negative are still like this. I read a study that recovered patients can test postove with more sensitive tests, though.

I've a biochem degree, not a medical one, but am used to reading papers. Basically the metabolites and lipids (fats) in a group of Covid-19 patients with different symptoms were studied, and a correlation was found between severity of symptoms during the course of the disease and those metabolites. This indicates that the disease affects patient metabolism. In particular liver (hepatic) metabolites and lipids showed changes.

The information gained from this study means that therapeutic treatments could possibly be developed, and also the metabolites could be used to indicate which stage of Covid-19 a patient is experiencing.

WhyNotMe40 · 17/04/2020 17:44

Thanks. That paper was linked to in a particularly alarming article about possible long term damage to the liver, and compared it to hepatitis and herpes and chicken pox (re the virus hiding and causing later damage)

iWantKoalas · 17/04/2020 17:59

Perez' concluding remark

To adapt to the disorder of its DNA resulting from the insertion of the 6 HIV / SIVs, the covid-19
genome has most certainly increased its level of global organization by adaptation mutations.
And we will now have to fear that this genome will continue to mutate in order to optimize its
overall level of organization ...

Hi hope it's ok to post on this worrying about CV thread. I'm having such a tough time dealing with it all morning sleeping lost my appetite and worrying about everything and everyone.
I had a delivery today which tipped me over the edge it was a large item so the guys that came I asked them to put it in my entry but the guy came up to get the key off me and came up very close to my face to get the key. I was meant to open it all up before they got here but they came at 6.30 when it was meant to be between 8-9.
So now I'm panicking he breathed on me he didn't seem bothered much about social distancing and was chatting away.
I'm pregnant so really upset and worried as it is and things like this give me such bad anxiety it's unreal it keeps me awake at night. I've developed ocd so bad I'm cleaning all my shopping and washing my hands fifty times a day they now have started to bleed in the creases.
I rarely leave the house I went for a walk yesterday and was so anxious and I feel like people get to close I'm always checking my temp to see if I have symptoms of the virus. My mom isn't well and showing symptoms and my stepdad so I'm worrying about them I text and ring them ten times a day to see if their ok but their saying their fine and have mild symptoms but I know it could get worse.
I jsur don't see things getting better and my baby won't meet my family I've wrote a will and sent my mom all my stuff Incase I die so the kids can get the life insurance etc
I know this sounds crazy and I'm not a crazy person I suffer anxiety as a rule which I've got under control before all this. Can anyone relate or offer advice to me? I haven't spoke or seen a midwife now in ten weeks either as they keep cancelling me . Sorry to hijack this thread

SistemaAddict · 17/04/2020 18:16

Are there any numbers for today?

EducatingArti · 17/04/2020 18:30

Maria
It is extremely unlikely that you have come into contact with coronavirus, especially now that we have been in lockdown for nearly 4 weeks. Please don't worry.

Fuchsake · 17/04/2020 18:34

And I agree that the relaxation of the vulnerable group was simply because there were too many people in it
Has the guidance for who is vulnerable changed then?
