Why aren't people in their gardens or gazing out their window ?

What are they all doing?

I flit from being indoors to popping out to the garden to back indoors and nosing out the window. I can see many gardens from my house and no one is in theirs! Nor are they gazing out their windows.
Am I missing something? DH even said he was beginning to think we aren't allowed in our gardens as it's really odd round here.

(Yes I know I'm being nosey)

I'm lucky enough to have work to do (not taking that for granted, being freelance) so I spent part of today working, including a two hour video conferencing call. And then spent well over an hour in the afternoon going to Sainsburys, since it made sense to go at a time when it wasn't going to be crowded. I then spent time working on the cashflow for an unfunded arts venue I volunteer at, which is likely to go bust because of this pandemic, but we can't talk to our bank until we can show them when we are going to run out of money. Looked lovely outside, though..

Theflushedzebra · 08/04/2020 20:08

We've been out - dog walking and gardening out the front. It's been glorious weather in the SE today.

Many people out and about in the village - more than usual - presumably because nobody can do anything else than walk around the village & village green.

PipGirl404 · 08/04/2020 20:08

We have a bay window patio type thing that leads out from the kitchen. DH has to work so the kitchen sort of becomes the garden. We've not lived here that long either so haven't and won't get a chance to get some nice garden furniture!

FurForksSake · 08/04/2020 20:10

I agree, we barely hear any kids out playing in gardens for the most part and the weather is gorgeous. It does feel really odd, summer holidays you'd hear lots of kids but just now people do seem to be keeping them in.

MotherofDogs3 · 08/04/2020 20:12

Iv got my neices staying with us for a while till this is over (sister mentally unwell) and they in garden allday most days.I usually join them on/off through out the day but been enjoying control of my tv while they occupied! Thank god for netflix! If i was on my own (partner still working) then i would probably be out there most days if hot enough. We only have a medium sized garden but got a hot tub (cold tub when hot!) A swing and garden furniture but kids and dogs love it anyway.

neighbourhoodwitch · 08/04/2020 20:13

WFH

forgetthehousework · 08/04/2020 20:13

Like OP I've been popping in and out, not seen many people but neighbours were in their garden. I said hello to someone as I was putting out rubbish (don't worry - much further apart than 2m) and she said it was nice to speak to someone as she lives by herself. I always look out of the window anyway, birds, cats, people, clouds, whatever.

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 08/04/2020 20:14

I've been outside loads today. Potted up some seedlings, checked on my sweet peas, did a little weeding.
At 7pm I smashed out a kettlebell workout on the terrace (Total not-so-stealth boast, I'm such a lazy fecker most of the time.)
I have noticed that most of my neighbours have stayed inside, it's extremely odd.

Doilooklikeatourist · 08/04/2020 20:14

I’m furloughed and out in the back garden or the greenhouse all the time
It got too hot earlier , so I did a bit of my jigsaw puzzle #livingthedream

dudsville · 08/04/2020 20:14

Im in my garden! Wave if you see me!

megletthesecond · 08/04/2020 20:15

I do both.
I even work sitting on my bed so I can see people come and go. Have lunch break in the garden.
Just been gazing out the window at the local cats.

transformandriseup · 08/04/2020 20:17

Most of my neighbours are in their gardens all day. I have been working on a laptop in the garden.

Nomorewineever · 08/04/2020 20:19

Oh all mine are out and have been all day. Clearly I’m the only poor sod trying to work (ironically in a ‘blue light services’ key worker role, all be it one I am luckily enough to be able to do from home. Every fucker in a 360 from me has been blaring radios, playing drums, drilling, jet washing, laying a new roof, or giving me a concert of the shittest music ever. And not at any sort of normal level; at a ‘this is a holiday and we are going to party’ level. And that’s inside with my windows shut. God forbid I might get a break from my 14 hour day in the peace outside. No chance.

If any single one of those morons dares to clap me tomorrow night I shall be pointing out that they’d be better placed to actually allow me to do my job without being a selfish, ignorant arsehole. There are lots of people working nights, working hard, juggling and being pushed to the limit. Listening to your shit-FM at top volume because you are bored rigid is not going to help me, or the people I am in turn trying to help in my job.

vodkaredbullgirl · 08/04/2020 20:19

Ive been busy this afternoon in the garden, doing my veggie patch. Yesterday I replaced the roof on my shed, using the some of the fence panels I had and leftover felt.

Plan to go out again tomorrow to cut the grass.

canigooutyet · 08/04/2020 20:19

Haven’t got a garden. Sat out on the balcony lots. Those with gardens apart from one family never use their gardens. It’s been the same over the past 20 years. They are extremely overlooked.

I prefer to people watch outside a cafe or pub and watch the world go by. Plus round here, see the wrong person and it could bring a whole heap of trouble in my life I don’t need. I really don’t want to know what some of my neighbors do

Gigabitten · 08/04/2020 20:19

1 - Because I'm supposed to be doing my dissertation and I can always start again on the garden - I can't start again with my degree. yes, it's overgrown so really does need tending to, it's just not a priority and..

2 - my neighbours are dickheads and make life unpleasant. Fortunately, they've sold their house. Unfortunately, the bloody virus has prevented them from fucking off sooner rather than later. So couldn't go in the garden even if I wanted to.

PumpkinP · 08/04/2020 20:23

Speak for yourself, my neighbours have been in there garden all day every day since this started having a party, driving me up the wall as they are 2 doors down but I can hear every single word they say as they are so loud. The people behind have also been mowing the lawn daily by the sounds of it.

forgetthehousework · 08/04/2020 20:24

I am a bit surprised that some people think if you are looking out of your window you're spying on folks. If I had the binoculars out then I could understand it, but I can assure everyone that I just like to see the world going on around me as opposed to on a TV or computer screen.

forgetthehousework · 08/04/2020 20:27

I appreciate how lucky we are to have even a small garden, and even luckier to have, mostly, pleasant neighbours.

lokoho · 08/04/2020 20:28

All our neighbours are doing DIY. Our street is going to be fucking fabulous after all this. Broke, but GLEAMING.

Goingfarawsy · 08/04/2020 20:28

I’ve thought exactly the same. I’m always in garden or standing longingly at the window too!

Yesterdayforgotten · 08/04/2020 20:30

You can work from your garden; honestly try it!

sonjadog · 08/04/2020 20:31

Too cold to hang around in my garden today.

FinallyGoingToBeAMummy · 08/04/2020 20:32

Alot of people down my road aren’t really outside that often.. 1. Because the vast majority of us are working from home still on full time hours and 2. Its a new build development and we havent even been a year so peoples garden are just basic still at the mo! No decking, patios yet etc

itwaseverthus · 08/04/2020 20:32

We've been in our garden all day. Me sunning myself and feeding the birds, ds chipping and putting with his new golf net. DH clearing out the garage. Can't see neighbours though as the fences are high and covered with greenery but I can hear them out cutting lawns and kids playing. Lovely to have the sun today.
