I am assuming the point being made is that wet markets and markets that sell wild animals for consumption are not the same thing. Wet markets are found all over Asia and products are considered to be fresher and cheaper than fruit etc in the supermarket.
The media love to use the term wet market to refer to wild markets and then stir up outrage that China has not banned wet markets. Markets which trade in wild animals for consumption have been now prohibited in China and regulations regarding this were introduced in Feb.
Wet markets continue to operate.

There are different theories. Nothing conclusive. Good CNN article.

Chinese eating and preparing animals to eat that should never be appearing on a dinner plate.Sadly china has a eat anything that moves approach and I'm surprised this didnt happen sooner. They are known for their cruelty and abuse of animals the world over.I hope china are held accountable and the animals they eat, the way they are treated is now being reviewed but sadly I fear not.

Perfect example of the racism I was talking about - this poster is following a totally arbitrary distinction between animals which do and do not belong on dinner plates and then calling Chinese people abusive and cruel for not having made the same distinction.

Some Hindus consider cows to be sacred objects of veneration and consider it to be sacrilegious, repulsive and disgusting to eat them. But I expect most of the people on this thread who happily tuck into a beef roast on a Sunday would be furious to be called disgusting / cruel / abusive for eating cows.

What’s the difference? No really, why is your meat consumption ok and another culture’s not?

Yeah, so does SE Nigeria, amongstother places. You might want to think a little about why that might be.

I won't be reading or debating any thread likely to lead to sharing details of China's none existent animal welfare. But let's not pretend humanely raising and slaughtering or humanely hunting for food is remotely comparable or responsible for epidemics.

And as for the climate being damaged by meat eaters, we're going to need a much more deadly pandemic that wipes out most of the worlds population if we're all going to have enough land in the right environments to eat only locally produced vegetarian/ vegan diets.

(Although I'm putting money on the climate comment being vegan inspired, it demonstrates the usual ignorance)

The Chinese government is wholly responsible. They disappeared the people who tried to tell us about it last year. If nothing else, hopefully our governments will finally realise that being dependant on the CCP for anything more necessary than navel lint is suicidal.

Any time a person says ‘wet markets are disgusting’ it instantly reveals that they don’t know what the fuck they’re talking about.

Well, clearly China has a lot to answer for. This isn’t the first time they concealed a novel virus originating in their country. They also have clearly lied about their death toll and how infectious this is. I hope there is sanctions for them but seems unlikely given the risk by doing that as they hold a lot of power. I do think we all accepted the cover up they did with SARS as clearly it was so dealt it did not spread as far, but lets see what happens after this.

Porcupineinwaiting that is no excuse for the abuse they inflict. I have no issue with them eating anything that moves , but it should be killed humanely and within welfare guidelines and laws

The conditions in which animals are butchered for human consumption in Chinese markets is a breeding ground for viruses like this. Their animal welfare and food hygiene standards are appalling.

I bet if you watched videos of slaughterhouses in this country they would upset you just as much as the videos you’ve seen from China. If you saw the frightened cows calling for each other as they’re herded in, if you saw them being hit with bars that give them electric shocks to force them in the right direction, if you saw veal calves being bolted in the head as babies, if you saw the skulls with the eyeballs still in them when all the skin and meat has been flayed off. If you aren’t a monster it would upset you, so you don’t think about it and you pretend to yourself that it’s ok, that maybe the cows don’t mind really, that maybe it’s ok if they’re terrified as long as it’s done where you don’t have to look at it.

But don’t try and tell me that your way is ok and everyone else’s is wrong, because I truly can’t see the difference between the cruelty and slaughter you endorse and the cruelty and slaughter you condemn.

I watched a two minute video of a Chinese wet market and I was deeply distressed, it was barbaric and gruesome.

Have you ever watched footage from an abattoir in the UK? Perhaps you should.

Through their eating habits they have destroyed the lives of thousands of people so sorry if I'm not singing their praises.
And their animal welfare is close to non existent.

We kill calves for veal because we think the meat is more tender when they’re babies. Doesn’t that sound just a bit monstrous?

We force feed geese with tubes stuck down their throats until their livers virtually explode because we think it’s a delicacy. How is that not just as bad?

"Wet markets" aren't the problem.

Keeping wild animals in a food market and slaughtering them on site might be the problem - but that isn't the be all and end all of a wet market. It is a food market. I believe it is called "wet" because of the ways it is cleaned (by sluicing it all down with water) but am happy to be corrected.

Qwerty, love him or hate him, if anyone is going to make the CCP pay, it’s Trump. No other world leader would have the balls - which is an indictment in and of itself.

Bear in mind the CCP is still pumping out propaganda and selling faulty tests and ventilators to countries losing thousands of people to a disease the CCP likely released and covered up. How is this not criminal?

I know about the the cows and the calves and yes it is heartbreaking. Our country is not perfect but at least we do have laws and welfare standards. The animals in China have nobody for any kind of protection as there are no rules so you can not even compare
