Why does this not surprise me. We were appalling slow to allow lockdown. Govt u-turn on herd immunity. Allowing Cheltenham and other events to go ahead. Those in charge need to be held accountable when this is over.

The stats are now being reported as ‘died WITH corona’ rather than ‘FROM’ - so these dogs are not necessarily EXTRA deaths but they are certainly EARLY deaths.

I don’t want any early deaths of course but as someone posted earlier we lose thousands of people to flu and don’t mention it. I still think the gov is nowhere near as good as German etc

Newgirls · 08/04/2020 18:02

Dogs?!!! Agh sorry deaths

BiBiBirdie · 08/04/2020 18:05

I really can't see it

I mean, obviously I defer to "experts" but can't see how anyone can claim to be an expert in a brand new illness that no one had really been able to fully study with definite figures and science as yet.

Bibi - there have been earlier covid viruses so although 19 is a mutation the epidiomologists are making educated ‘guesses’

MarshaBradyo · 08/04/2020 18:33

I remember some stat about people being younger than they thought and median 61 being floated. In ICU maybe?

I know it’s not on when people put unfounded posts but it’s really bugging me that I saw something and can’t find it. Anyone remember this?

This is a question not a statement.

Obama comes out in favour of the WHO advice to Test, Test, Test

twitter.com/BarackObama/status/1247890918440448003

Meanwhile in the UK the advisers spent the whole press conference today desperately trying to row back on Chris Whitty's acknowledgement yesterday that the UK should have tested more like Germany, outright lying by claiming he didn't mean it. Proof that they are politically motivated rather than following the science.

Delatron · 08/04/2020 18:59

I hope they will let Chris Whitty back in the press conferences at least he’s honest!

We should learn from other countries and acknowledge our mistakes.

Newgirls · 08/04/2020 19:06

I’m sure the uk gov want to test but as they’ve said at various conferences we don’t have the manufacturing output that Germany has. We simply don’t have the tests yet. And even if targets are met it will take all year to home test 60 million people.

Inniu · 08/04/2020 19:59

The stated U.K. government target is 100,000 tests per day by next month. That is less than 10 weeks to test everyone not a year.
Obviously certain people will need to be tested more than once but good screening and timely contact tracing would mean you can focus the testing.

dementedpixie · 08/04/2020 20:02

Say what? At 100,000 tests per day would it not take nearly 2 years to test the UK population?

SorrelBlackbeak · 08/04/2020 20:04

60 million people @ 100000 tests per day is 600 days. In practice they won't need to test everyone, but it's a good few months of testing.

thatgingergirl · 08/04/2020 20:09

Innui - can you show your workings for that?!

Newgirls · 08/04/2020 20:17

600 days yep. It will be a while before they get to me - healthcare, teachers, kids etc way before the average 40 year old!

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 08/04/2020 21:11

Why would they test kids?

Inniu · 08/04/2020 21:22

Sorry was thinking of 1,000,000 a day. But still widespread targeted testing will allow restrictions to be lifted without going for herd immunity.

SorrelBlackbeak · 08/04/2020 21:23

They'd probably test kids fairly early to try and get schools reopened.

Newgirls · 09/04/2020 09:47

Test kids to reassure parents that they are likely to be immune (this disease has been in the uk for months - lots of kids will have had it by now)

Also test teachers before at-home parents as they are key workers.

midgebabe · 09/04/2020 09:51

There seems to be a belief that lots of people have already had it means the same as a significant number of people have already had it

I would be surprised if even 1 in 100 people have had it already based on current deaths and tested positive numbers

If say 50000 have tested positive and that is only 10% of people who have it ( assuming only testing people who hospitalised ) it's only half a million out of a population of 72 million

Newgirls · 09/04/2020 10:02

The figs will be far higher! You only get tested in hospital!

We have had DAILY flights from China, Italy, Spain etc from November. I know at least six people in my town who have had classic symptoms and not been tested. Only one has been abroad this year. This covid has been in the uk for months - so many threads on this already!

7Days · 09/04/2020 10:18

Are you talking about antibody tests?

Random18 · 09/04/2020 10:24

We are probably under 10% of people who have had it.

Probably well under. Although in London for example that % may be higher and in some areas the % who have had it may be almost negligible.

MarshaBradyo · 09/04/2020 10:38

It’s very hard to know. Added to the fact they are just starting to find out that tests move to positive over a number of days. And we test in hospital only.

midgebabe · 09/04/2020 10:55

Yes but we know that roughy 15% of people infected end up in hospital from China and Germany for example

So unless you are saying that hospitals were overrun with victims in January/February and just didn't mention it, it's impossible to conclude that large proportion of the population has already been infected

Wishful thinking
